One Day In Heidelberg
Advantages: Tourists love it.
Disadvantages: Tourists love it.
...Follow me, I want to show you one of the most beautiful German towns. I think you can trust me as a guide, I lived , loved and studied in Heidelberg for six years. You're not convinced, you think I'm prejudiced and all this talk about Heidelberg being romantic and picturesque is just 'ad speak' to lure the tourists and you'd like to hear a different opinion before you embark on your journey?
No problem, just listen to this: "Truly, Heidelberg is a place of all exceeding loveliness. Here the romantic ruggedness of the German landscape unites in perfect harmony with the delicate beauty of Italy." Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881)
"I have never enjoyed a view which had such a serene and satisfying charm about it as this one gives." Mark Twain, Heidelberg, 1878.
Do you believe me now? I don't want to bore you with too much history...

Worth visiting Heidelberg just for this!
Advantages: Fantastic view, not many tourists around, free!
Disadvantages: Quite steep at times
...When I visited Heidelberg for the first time, the Philosophenweg was at the top of the to-do list for me. It's on the opposite side of the river to the old town and the castle, which means that you get a great view of them!
The philosopher's way is a beautiful trail said to have been walked by many famous thinkers. Note that it is entirely uphill, so might not be suitable for everyone! It's quite steep but worth it if you can manage the walk.
As I said, the Philosophers' Way is on the opposite side of the river to the old town and the castle. To get to it from the old town, you can cross the old bridge (the Carl Theodor Bridge which, by the way, is a big attraction in itself and if I can think of enough to say, maybe I'll write a review of the bridge too). Anyone will be able to point you to this as it's very famous! Once you...

Art is Balls
Advantages: A bit of everyhing - museums, parks, palaces, shops, often great weather, the ice cream at Eis Roma, always something going on
Disadvantages: Dreary Januaries
...After 5 years of German lessons and numerous visits to the country, Heidelberg has still managed to escape my attention, and when I moved here in august last year I really did not know what to expect. Factoring in various holidays, I’ve spent around 10 of the last 11 months here, and as you’d expect, I’ve come to know the town pretty well.
Heidelberg has everything you could want from a tourist destination – an ancient castle, a charming old town area, a river running through it with luscious green banks on one side, a renowned Christmas market and a usually pleasant climate. It’s no wonder that the Americans and Japanese flock here in their thousands each year. I spent most of the last 20 years living in a tourist resort in the UK, so the masses don’t really phase me, but if you’re looking...

Moving on up
Advantages: Easy access to castle and beyond, great views from the top
Disadvantages: It's not as cheap as it used to be - but then, what is?
...As the hordes of tourist coaches blocking the roads every summer prove, Heidelberg is one of the most popular destinations in Germany for visitors from all over the globe and anyone who lives there would probably agree that the Hauptstrasse is only rivalled by the Tower of Babel for the variety of languages that you hear when strolling along towards the old town and the castle.
Perhaps it is unfair to say that the Bergbahn (funicular railway) is not a well-known attraction in Heidelberg, but the many passengers who do use it to take the easy way up to the castle and beyond are probably unaware of the unique nature of the service that they are using. The Bergbahn is the longest funicular railway in Germany, with a track length of 1.5km, and odd though it sounds, this is simultaneously the most modern and the oldest funicular railway in...

Good Value...
Advantages: Beautiful scenery and town, good atmosphere
Disadvantages: Can feel cramped, virtually everything squashed into old town
...If you're arriving in Heidelberg by train, the town does not seem particularly inspiring as you step outside the Hauptbahnhof - hemmed in by the main road and the tram lines with new offices rising all around, this does not seem to be the beuatiful mediaeval city the tour guides rave about. Take the number 1 tram to Bismarckplatz however, and you will begin to see what everyone was going on about - the wooded hills soar high up to your right, and as you walk down the Hauptstrasse to the old town, the castle looms out of the mist, perched high on the hillside overlooking the old main square and the tangled mass of cobbled alleyways that constituted the Heidelberg known to the electors of the Holy Roman Empire. The Alte Bruecke (Old Bridge) still spans the River Neckar, painstakingly rebuilt after its destruction on the last day of WW2...

Lost My Heart
Advantages: Lots to do (see op)
Disadvantages: Too many tourists
...This should be a handy guide if you intend to visit Heidelberg, so you might want to print it out.
Why am I qualified to write this article?
I lived in the area for over a year and went out in Heidelberg at least once a week. I have gained a pretty good insight into what there is to do in this very busy town – and also what should be avoided.
My intention here is to give a girl’s view on the choice of sights, restaurants, cafes, bars and of course shops that Heidelberg has to offer.
But first of all...
What is Heidelberg like for non-German speakers?
I would here and now like to lay to rest any language worries you might have: if you don’t speak German, it won’t be a problem; Heidelberg is probably the most international German town I have ever been to - everybody and his dog seems to speak...

so beautiful...
Advantages: gorgeous
Disadvantages: parking is expensive
...Heidelberg isn't a typical German town. In fact, due to the large numbers of British, American and Japanese tourists, and the 2 large US army bases nearby, you're more likely to need English than German. However, if you do happen to meet a native(rare)they'll be appreciative if you can speak at least a few phrases of German.
There's so much to do in Heidelberg a day-trip definitely doesn't do it justice. The Main Street is full of beautiful sandstone buildings with gorgeous carvings. There are loads of museums, including, strangely, one for packaging. Obviously, everyone has to visit the castle, which was partly ruined during the franco-prussian war,but can still be walked around and contains a huge wine-barrel with a dance floor on the top. The castle gardens are lovely too.
However, I think the nicest place to go is...

Capri-Sun
Advantages: Good for quick drink, easily disposable
Disadvantages: Not enough in pouch, leaves you still feeling thirsty
...for packlunches, washing down with snacks and for walks or camping trips. They also have a great aftertaste and therefore don't require an extra snack or drink to have straight after it to change the taste in your mouth. The pouch is trapezoidal in shape and is therefore able to stand up on a able etc.
Ingredients (for apple flavour)
Water, Fruit Juices from concentrate 30% (Apple 25.5%, Lemon, Acerola Cherry), Sugar, Natural Flavours.

Let Me Lodge A Complaint, Mr Lodge!
Advantages: the story proper
Disadvantages: the afterword
...-to-speak, and it's 'Literary Studies For Beginners' that this raw material is then shaped, lengthened, condensed, changed, mixed with pure inventions and so on and so forth. Even an autobiography is shaped in that way, it is never a direct account of what happened in chronological order, if it were, nobody would read one, it would be unbearably boring.
So, when I read in the afterword of Out of the Shelter "In 1951, at the age of sixteen, I travelled unaccompanied to Heidelberg, West Germany, to spend a holiday with my aunt Eileen, my mother's sister, who was working there as a civilian secretary for the U.S. Army" and later "For my aunt, I substituted the character of Timothy's sister Kate (I am an only child myself), physically and emotionally very different from Eileen. The adult relationships and intrigues in which Timothy becomes involved...
