The mainland mainline organisation is based in Derby and in 2006 midland mainline won the award for Passenger Operator of the Year at the national rail awards. Routes Midland main line takes the route as in its title, the midland main line. This runs from Sheffield to London. Although the highest point on the line is Leeds you generally have to travel to Sheffield after the morning rush hour to travel on these trains as only a hand full run out of Leeds in the early morning and thus returning later at night. The Mysteries of Midland Main Line

Advantages: helpful staff, generally clean reliable service
Disadvantages: expensive complicated ticket pricing

...Having moved house but not job I have, until recently, been a long distance commuter between Leicester and London (St Pancras). So, for my sins, I have become quite well acquainted with the Midland MainLine train services. Despite being an avid who-dunnit fan there are a number of mysteries I have yet to solve about their services. Mystery of the Twin Trains Midland Mainline cover a large part of the country from Leeds (and recently Manchester) Sheffield through Nottingham Derby and Leicester and the smaller intermediate towns to Luton and London (St Pancras). Leicester has a very frequent service of 4 trains an hour but for some mysterious reason the trains need company and run in two batches (one slow and one fast service departing within 5 minutes of each other) with an half hour wait till the next service. Midlands Only Line......

Advantages: Free Drinks, Good Trains, Regularish.
Disadvantages: VERY poor punctuality, unfriendly staff sometimes

...for the same journey can exceed 80pounds at times!:S Travelling in a group on the same journey can cost as little as 10pounds each, which is also great value! Ok, so you might have to restrict yourself to certain trians, which isn't ideal, but at such a low price its very difficult to complain! NEGATIVE LOTS OF DELAYS The trains south are generally punctual and normally run, but the trains back home seem to appear whenever they want. Only last night I was stood in leicester station to see every single train to Nottingham delayed, an estimated time of arrival was not given and a reasonable explanation was not provided. Midland Mainline also has the VERY annoying habit of cancelling a service from Nottingham in the mornings and running it from Loughborough (the next station down the line)...they say that this is because...

Midland Strainline *UPDATE*

Advantages: Frequent trains, free tea and coffee
Disadvantages: Frequent delays, high ticket prices, uncomfortable Turbostars

...) are frequent on both types of trains. They are busy refurbishing the older HSTs, but it has made little difference. Trains are often overcrowded at peak times, but quite uncrowded in the middle of the day. Customer service is patchy. I have come to know most of the onboard personnel over the years, and each have their quirks. Sometimes information on delays etc. is hard to come by, which can be frustrating. And just last night, I heard a lady on her mobile telling someone that her ticket had been checked at the barrier at St.Pancras (a normal procedure for peak time trains) and the member of staff had demanded to see her seat reservation (quite rudely, she felt). She said she couldn't understand why he cared if she didn't have a seat, and she argued with him that she was going to miss the train while she searched for the reservation. It...

OLD TRAINS ARE BEST

Advantages: At-seat complimentary refreshments; clean toilets.
Disadvantages: No onboard Wi-Fi; no power points for laptop computers

...and find my reserved seat in the second carriage. On an EMT High Speed train there are eight carriages - five Standard-Class, two First Class and one carriage shared between First Class and the Buffet. The toilet compartment in my carriage is small but scrupulously clean, with plenty of hot water, soap and tissue. I get out my washkit and scrub my face, neck and hands before drenching myself in Lynx deodorant - unless this is done once per rail journey, the collars and cuffs of my white shirts get very grubby. All freshened up and squeaky-clean I return to my reserved seat, whose cushion measures twenty-one inches wide and eighteen inches deep, which both reclines and lines up perfectly with a (curtained) window. When I continue my journey from London Victoria to the South Coast I will be travelling First Class on New Southern Railway...

Maine Coon Cats -the Gentle Giant

...Maine Coon -the "gentle giant" We, as a family have just proudly added a new member to our family -by the name of Weetabix. Weetabix is a beautiful brown tortie Maine coon cat with tiger stripe grey and white legs and paws. We received her last Saturday when she was 13 weeks old, and she has fit into our family so well. She is a really friendly cat, and gets on great with our three year old son. Her favourite past time is to climb all over me and sleep on me -so I am now an official climbing frame/ cat bed!! ...honest, I have never dealt with a delay on Midland Main line that has lasted more than 5 minutes, and only witnessed a cancelled train once. Thats in 5 years of using them. In contrast, their main competitor in the midlands (Central Trains) is consistently late, slow and unreliable. But I don?t wanna go to Leicester! ----------------------------------------------------- Don?t worry! Midland Mainline services most of the Midlands, and up North. They?ll take you to Derby, Sheffield, Leeds, Nottingham and a whole load of little towns that are dotted about. Travelling with Midland Mainline was a pleasure it was a comfortable ride all along. It did not really seem that you were moving unlike a car which is bumpy along the road. Behind Enemy Lines

Advantages: Entertaining the whole way through
Disadvantages: Slightly on the budget side

...Last night Behind enemy lines was on Film Four and I thought I?d give it ago, I had never heard of the film before and so did not know what to expect, I always give the info on the TV a read before getting into a new film as unfortunately I am one of the Biased people of the world who find a film more worth trying if it has good actors and a good synopsis. Judging a book by its cover and all that (slap on the wrists). First impressions Before the film had started I had my doubts, the cast of actors includes Owen Wilson, and after seeing more than a fair share of his films, I was doubtful to whether he could pull off what was being described on the TV info as an ?action/thriller? It's £6.97 from Amazon but they also have it 'new and used' from £1.95, which is cheaper than a rental.
