Bulmer's Pear Cider 568ml

Advantages: Great taste, established brand.
Disadvantages: Can be expensive in some outlets.

...I find that this one of the best bitesize perry's you can get. It comes from Herefordshire which has a long cider making tradition and makes some of the best cider in the world. It's dry, smooth and sweet in equal measures, and you know about it when you've had a few! I have been to Hereford and it averages £2/ 568ml bottle. But I have found a perry which is a little better. It's called Old Moors Pear Cider and it comes from Aldi UK. It is made in Devon, UK and is a fraction of the price of Bulmer's. Under £2 per bottle (568ml). It tastes much smoother and isn't too sweet. As for Bulmer's original, it is a good drink and you will be hard pushed to get anything better in the world. The only drawback with Bulmer's is the price, but what would you pay in a pub? £3, £4? At 4.5% it is a sensible drink and overall very good...

Charming Hereford

Advantages: Charming,small,provincial city.Visually attractive
Disadvantages: Isolated. Does not have vibrant night life

...Hereford is a small, rustic, provincial city, serving a large farming hinterland, and although a bit isolated,is a delightful and charming place to visit. It is visually an attractive town and the black and white houses of Herefordshire are a joy. The city has a stunningly beautiful Cathedral, well planned, pedestrian friendly, shopping areas,a very helpful tourist information centre, and the lovely River Wye which snakes its way through the city. Last year I stayed in a delightful guest house overlooking the river. It is Britain's cider capital and not surprisingly befitting an old farming and market town, houses a host of thoroughly enjoyable inns and taverns. The dining out scene in Hereford is also good, especially if you like solid English fare, although there are ethnic eateries in town. There are a number of well appointed...

Fear And Loathing In Chipping Sodbury!

Advantages: Sweeter than most scrumpy
Disadvantages: Hard to get hold of outside Somerset

...support we were steered to Moles Black Rat Cider. Black Rat Cider is a West Country scrumpy and comes in two varieties; traditional and vintage. Traditional is cloudy and has an alcohol content of 6.0%. Vintage is much clearer and weighs in at a hefty 7.3%. They are both sold under the banner of Moles Brewery of Melksham in Wiltshire although are actually made under license by Thatchers of Somerset. Thatchers, incidentally, provide the base apple juice for the now trendy Magners. There are two distinct scrumpy making areas in England; The West Country and Herefordshire. The scrumpies of these areas tend to be very different due to the apple growing conditions and the variety of apples used. General rule of thumb is that Somerset cider is sweeter and with a more pronounced taste of apples than its acidic macho cousin on the Welsh Borders...

Review of Moles Black Rat Cider

The aroma of apples.

Advantages: Cheap & refreshing
Disadvantages: over indulge at your peril

...HISTORY: Cider is a traditional British drink that has been around for centuries, it has been renowned for its medicinal purposes. It reputedly relieved gout, alleviated problems of the urinary tract and rheumatic diseases and was even used as a cleansing agent for surgical dressing. Cider has been drunk by many famous people such as Daniel Defoe who praised its medicinal powers and described it as "so very good, so fine and cheap......" It was also made famous by the writer Laurie Lee in his book Cider with Rosie. In 1894 Percy Bulmer in Herefordshire made his first barrel of Woodpecker Cider and today it is still produced by Bulmers of Herefordshire. Back in the 1950's which was before I was born Woodpecker pioneered drinks advertising on Television with the then Top of the Pops group, the Beverly Sisters singing its...

We live in the Shadowlands

Advantages: Briliant Acting, Beautiful settings, Compelling Storyline
Disadvantages: Very sad

...this she is understated and conveys happiness and pain brilliantly. The supporting cast are great as well, containing young actors as well as established character actors such as Michael Dennison (without Dulcie Grey, though). The Setting I had to include this. The setting of Oxford with its dreaming spires, is excellent. However it is the footage of Clive and Joy's honeymoon in Herefordshire that captivated me. The Golden Valley looked stunning, and made me realise I wanted to live in Herefordshire. I saw the film in 1994. In 2003 I realised my ambition. Conclusions = The film is, quite simply, excellent. The acting, script and cinematography meld together to produce a beautiful film. The storyline, although it would seem like it at first glance, is not schmaltzy and harrowing, it is actually life...

A Damn Nice Bag Of Crisps

Advantages: Nice and thick, nice flavour
Disadvantages: Quite expensive but worth the money

...in Herefordshire where they grow the potatoes and also make the crisps. They say that it is not unusual for potatoes to be dug in the morning and turned into crisps, or chips as they like to call them, by lunchtime. Unlike mass produced crisps, small batches of their own potatoes are thick sliced into sunflower oil, retaining their natural juices and goodness. They then add their own natural flavours to give you real food with pedigree!! So What Are They Like? The packet is a very sturdy and almost 'posh' one and when you open it you are met with quite 'posh' looking crisps also. They are quite thick cut and look quite well cooked, almost burnt. You also get a very nice smell, slightly vinegar like which makes your mouth water a bit. When you get them in your mouth they are very thick and crisp and crunch very nicely...
