...Herne Bay on the North Kent coast is one of the nearest coastal resorts for South Londoners -it is only 55 miles from London-and it has had a reputation for being a place for retirement and judged to be a bit of a "sleepy hollow" This stereotype is increasingly becoming outdated as major improvements have taken place in the resort. There is a Pier Pavillion which is good for those visitors keen on a bit of exercise and there is also an ultra-modern sports centre,with a swimming pool, and an adjoining multi-screen Cinema,called the Kavanagh. In recent years the promenade has had an extensive facelift and the Bandstand has been nicely refurbished. The latter hosts brass band concerts in the season and has a very pleasant cafetaria. The town has a number of good pubs I would single out The Ship on the seafront as a good example...

Herne Bay: Improving !

Advantages: Near to London. Nice refurbished bandstand. Clean
Disadvantages: Lacking in vitality.Lack of night life. No good hotels

...The North Kent coastal resort of Herne Bay is slowly wakening from its slumbers and gearing itself for tourism. The town is comparatively modern and has long attracted a lot of retirees.However for a number of years the town seemed to be commercially in a downward spiral with shop closures and the seafront looking a bit down at heel. In recent years some significant improvements have taken place. A new multiplex cinema and,a sports centre were built,the remains of the pier modernised and more recently the bandstand refurbished. The latter has become an attractive stopping off point for folk walking along the seafront. The Downs are an attractive bit of greenery overlooking the sea and located there is the Kings Hall theatre,where summer shows are held. The accommodation picture in Herne Bay is not very impressive and the dining out...

A VISIT TO HERNE BAY IN KENT

Advantages: peaceful and relaxed in the daytime
Disadvantages: nightime can be noisy in town centre.

Sunday afternoons are a great time to be at the bandstand, where a band and different groups perform gigs in the sunshine, ask at the information centre that is next to the bandstand, if ever you decide to visit Herne bay. The information centre was very interesting, displaying all kinds of gifts and leaflets about the town, and there were other booklets about other holiday seaside towns. The pier pavilion is another good place to go because there are a number of amusements as well as roller-skating, sport activities and so on. Of course every seaside town has amusement arcades and I popped in to see what they were like. They were really good fun, displaying a dance machine, computerised games, and in the 2p slots you could hopefully win a gold watch or a gold ring if you were lucky. I finally got to...

My Bay

Advantages: tasty addition to stews and cassorole
Disadvantages: maybe to strong for your taste

...Bay is an everygreen herb which grows like a shrub, it can be grown in open spaces or in tubs. The flowers of the bay are yellow and it will flower in may. The best way to get a bay plant is to buy one from a garden centre for around 99p depending on the size. I also like to get my herbs from bootsales where you can pick them up from 25p so saves money. When your bay plant is well established in the pot re-plant it outside. It likes to be in a sunny but shaded place in the garden. They may die off in the winter but should throw new shoots during the following spring. Bay is a native to the east mediterranean but have been grown in europe for years. The place is open seven days a week from 12.00 noon - 2.30 p.m. (lunch) and from 6.00 p.m. - 11.30 p.m. (dinner). They operate a home delivery service in the local area with a minimum order requirement of Stg 10 pounds and Khan's also provide catering services for Weddings, Anniversaries, Children's Parties and other events. The restaurants itself is spacious, nicely decorated with very white starched tablecloths, good quality china and cutlery. ROBIN HOOD'S BAY

Advantages: Beautifully preserved and evocative
Disadvantages: STEEP

...I've always wondered why Robin Hood's Bay was in North Yorkshire and not in Nottinghamshire. One explanation might be that Nottinghamshire, being landlocked, is not over-endowed with bays. Another is the sheer logistics of moving it from one county to another. Robin Hood's Bay is around 5 miles south of Whitby, and some 15 miles north of Scarborough on the North Sea coast of North Yorks. I've researched a little, and I can find no explanation of why this place has such an interesting name - it doesn't matter anyway. There are records dating back from 1536, apparently, of a small settlement of around 50 houses and 20 fishing boats but nothing about its namesake. Besides, the locals prefer to call it Bay Town. There may be some tenuous connection to the 'Prince of Thieves' though. Fishing has always been the mainstay of this...

Oh I do like to be beside the seaside

Advantages: Very tastefully modernised
Disadvantages: Insufficient parking

...Herne Bay, Kent has undergone a major facelift in recent years. It boasts a brand new seafront promenade with a recently rebuilt bandstand where you can relax with a cool Pimms. Close by is what is left of the pier accomodating a skating rink. The main shops run parallel to the sea front on the High Street and Mortimer Street, the latter is pedestrianised. Here is an abundance of small tea rooms and cafes to replenish your dry mouths after exploring all that this town has to offer. Also very new to the town is the cinema complex and swimming pool. The building is of a very modern design and the cinema offers two screens for added choice. It is hopeful that the pier which was destroyed in a storm a few years ago will soon be restored which will be the icing on the cake for Herne Bay....

There are several species of the bay/laurel tree Sweet Laurel (Laurus nobilis) The sweet laurel bay laurus noblius although first found in Asia Minor and the Mediterranean has grown in Britain since thec16c. This laurus nobilius grows as a small tree about to about 25 foot, in warm countries it will grow taller. This tree has a smooth bark. It is an evergreen, the leaves a narrow oval pointed shape (lanceolate) they are thick and smooth a shiny green. The flowers are small and yellow the fruit black with a single seed. The leaves are dried and stored for use. Bay leaves can be used in cookery flavouring soups, stews, fish, and pickles. The flavour is quite bitter, If you buy dried bay leaves they might not be this plant but the American California bay...
