The green green grass of Greece.
Advantages: Much greener than greek islands in the east, some traditionally greek, not bad prices
Disadvantages: Can be rainy, some resorts overdeveloped
...We were late starters to foreign travel due to one hundred and one reasons in our life. When we finally booked to fly abroad it was to Yugoslavia. As we arrived home from the travel agents the news on our television showed the start of the war out there. After many months we finally got our money back and picked Malta. That was an excellent holiday, but another story.
Having whetted our appetite for foreign travel we browsed the brochures on our return from Malta wanting to pick somewhere we really fancied for the next year. We had relatives who had gone to the Greek islands in the past so somehow or other we ended up picking Lefkas, which is one the Ionian Islands of Greece.

Fourka in Halkidiki (Greece)
Advantages: Gorgeous weather, fantastic people, great scenery
Disadvantages: Could perhaps do with a bit of a tidy up in places ?!
...My boyfriend and I wanted a cheap holiday - a week in the sun where we could relax and do not a lot basically!
We booked an internet deal through Thompson Holidays for £190 each (incl. flights, transfers and accomodation) for a week in Self Catering appartments.
Our flights were from Birmingham to Thessaloniki (which is the nearest airport to Halkidiki). The flight took around 3 hours and we then had an hour and a half transfer from the airport to our resort - Fourka.
Halkidiki is split into three penisulars, Kassandra, Sithonia and Mount Athos. These are near the north of main land Greece and are surrounded by the Aegean Sea.
Kassandra and Sithonia are supposed to be the livliest of the three, although they are not busy or crowded.
Mount Athos is a Monks Republic and is usually only seen by people from sea.
Fourka is...

Kefalos, Kos, Greece
Advantages: cheap to eat out, nice weather and clear blue sea and plenty of water sports
Disadvantages: People of Kos don't seem to like tourists, Windy
...a car or scooter here as they're everywhere. We didn't hire so I can't tell you how much this is and the reason we didn't hire was because they do drive like maniacs in Greece even 14 yr old boys racing on their scooters so do beware of this if you are going to greece. My boyfriend did get up very early one morning to go to the ancient market but I wanted a lie in! He said it was nice and this would be ideal for the historians among us. There he also saw lizards.
Overall this was a brilliant holiday and I would definetly go again.
Thank you for reading

Karystos Relatively Unknown Outside Greece
Advantages: Close to Athens airport and unknown paradise.
Disadvantages: Discos and tourist facilities thin on the ground
...I lived in Karystos for three years and still visit on a regular basis. I got a job there, teaching English, purely on spec. It was one of those accidents that prove you've done something good at some point in the past. I just wish I could remember what!
Karystos is a fishing town at the southernmost point of the island of Evvia. Evvia is actually the second biggest island in Greece, after Crete. This fact is relatively unknown, due to its being so close to the mainland. At its closest there is actually a bridge. It hugs the coast of Attica very close to Athens and is loosely classified as one of the Sporiades group of islands. It is also little known because it has no major resorts. At least none which are used by the major package tour companies. Except for Karystos.
Well not except for Karystos actually. A couple of tour...

Our worst meal ever in Greece
Advantages: We could leave and buy elsewhere
Disadvantages: Just don't go there
...when we arrived at the restaurant. We all voted and he phoned the order through.
This review is not about the island, just the worst place in Greece we have eaten, or chose not to.
We visited what he had said and it was great.
Then lunch.
The rep showed us to FRAZIS POPI, I would advise all visitors to avoid it like the plague.
We had salad, mine was white cabbage, cucumber and vinegar, unpleasant and inedible.
To follow, I had ordered, meatballs, another mistake they were cold with cold chips on a cold plate served by an old lady in slippers with no finesse at all shouting out fish, omelet, chicken, pork. You had to put up your hand for what you had ordered. All cold. The chicken was by far the worst thing I have ever seen let alone eaten.
The stuff you find lying on the street after at 3-00am on a Sunday morning...

Greece - the cultural capital of Europe
Advantages: Everything - Great food, people, sites, views and transport
Disadvantages: No cheaper than England
...I've recently completed an Ancient History degree and as part of this course we had to spend a fortnight in a foreign country researching an aspect of our course. Immediately, me and a few friends chose Greece, hoping for a great experience. Our focus was Greek mythology in the built environment (ie-how myth was shown on buildings). The two weeks spent here saw us travelling across the country on a hectic schedule, absorbing the culture and spending time walking around the numerous well-preserved ruins
Our itinerary saw us visiting Athens, Corinth, Olympia, Delphi, Tiryns, Mycenae and Eleusis. This review concerns Greece in general however, so I will not focus much on specifics.
One of the first things you notice about Greece is how beautiful it is. Olympia and Delphi in particular had lush green landscapes and heart...

A taste of Greece
Advantages: Eat where the Greeks eat in mainland towns and islands.
Disadvantages: Locals demand high standards but best after 9pm
...I have just returned from a two week holiday in Greece at Easter. If you live in a big city, Greece is the perfect antidote. I spent most of my time doing one of three things: eating out, swimming or sleeping...
After the first night in Athens we hired a car and drove to Delphi, where I had the best moussaka I've ever tasted, as well as taking in all the local history, of course. Then we went further north to the Ionian Coast, which was incredible, with perfect views, and amazingly hospitable locals. That part of Greece seems really special because it is still fairly untouched and there aren't many tourists....
Greece is one of the best countries in the world for vegetarians. I could easily give up meat if carefully prepared and slow-cooked classics such as papoutsakia ( aubergines stuffed with leeks and tomatoes ) and gigantes...

Greece uncovered and uncooth
Advantages: Hot, nightlife is still sometimes great
Disadvantages: Beery, leery Brit blokes
...self thanks, in part, to the hugely successful Sky TV series Greece Uncovered which featured Kavos heavily. As a result of this ratings-grabbing propaganda there is now an abundance of sexually frustrated 18-30 year old men lured by the promise of masses of free, casual sex off gorgeous women. Sadly the reality is that the blokes now outnumber the women by at least 2-1 giving every nightclub in the resort the feeling of a cattle market with loads of beer and testosterone fueled men on the prowl.
Maybe in another few years the 'Kev' element will have moved on to another resort and Kavos can return to the cool, but chilled out experience it used to be. But, for the time being take my advice and steer well clear....

A Place For Tourists and Turtles! (Kefalonia)
Advantages: Stunning scenery and an unspolit landscape
Disadvantages: None
...on the island is what has been reborn since then. Don't think Cycladian blue and white houses, but a sun caressed terracotta which has the Venetian influence. Sometimes it is hard to remember you are in Greece as the landscape is lush and green, with mature trees and is very pretty, despite being a tourist destination which is growing in popularity.
We stayed in the south of the island in a little sleepy village called Katelios, and our studios were situated away from the sea front at the edge of where the old town meets the new. A few minutes stroll and you were submerged in Greek life, amongst the orange groves, whilst towards the beach were the sleepy tavernas and the quiet waterfront.
We took a book with us from the local library called "Kefalonia" by Brian and Eileen Anderson, which is a simple but comprehensive guide to the island...

Tainted love: Island of wildlife & endless blue
Advantages: lots of wildlife, beautiful scenery, friendly locals and very hot
Disadvantages: commercialised, can be expensive to eat & drink, changeable weather
...When we holidayed in Kos, in the Aegean Sea in Greece, a few years ago, we so fell in love with the scenery, charm and atmosphere of this unique country made up of many individual islands, there was no question that Greece would be where we would go this year. However, wanting it to be a different enough experience to keep us interested, we decided on Zante, otherwise known as Zakynthos, over at the other side of the mainland in the Ionian Sea. Quite a large island, so close to Kefalonia and the Greek mainland that both are visible from parts of the island on a clear day, Zante boasts a varied and interesting geography of sandy beaches and coves, shallow waters, stunning mountains, cliffs and caves, and an abundance of marine life including dolphins and its beloved Caretta-Caretta turtles. Despite the severe 1953 earthquake destroying...
