An old friend on the High Street

Advantages: Everything under one roof
Disadvantages: Prices are more expensive than average

...I have been shopping at W H Smith since the mid 1970s. So it does have a special place in my heart. Really everything is under one roof eg magazines, books, toys, stationery, CDs, videos, computer software, mobile phones, study aids, cards, pens etc. The store is always well stocked. The store meets all your needs. But items are more expensive than average. You can save money by shopping around more specialist stores. Whilst at Liverpool University I recall frequent Friday afternoon trips to Smiths to stock up on magazines for weekend reading. I remember attending a book signing session there with the great Liverpool manager Bob Paisley. Over the past 10 years more specialist stores have appeared on the High Street taking away the custom from WH Smith eg Clinton Cards specialises in cards, HMV has a larger range of CDs...

Designer quality, high street price

Advantages: Makes you look more awake, more alive and younger!
Disadvantages: None whatsoever!

...I am a great fan of the Boots No7 range, although relatively expensive for what's basically a high street brand (although I found No7 products sold in lots of places in their own right in Australia and New Zealand, countries which both lack a really good pharmacy/ toiletries store), it does offer excellent quality products. I don't often write reviews on skincare products or cosmetics, as it has to be something I really believe or I'd end up just writing a long, dull list of ingredients and directions, but this product is definitely something special. One of my favourites in this range is the High Lights Illuminating Lotion. For years I used the pricey Clarins Flash Beauty Balm (£23.50 for 50ml). This is great but I have since discovered that No7 highlights (also Hypo-allergenic) is every bit as good for less than half the price...

Street Lurvin'

Advantages: Lots of big tunes
Disadvantages: A couple of tunes lack energy

Alas Smith and Groans...

Advantages: Plenty of town centre stores
Disadvantages: Odd mix of stuff..

...Because Zavvi and Woolworth's have gone bust HMV will survive and it's the same all the way along the high street, one mans misfortunes is another mans gain. With the firsts signs of the recovery in the financial and housing markets quite clear now, only the exploding oil price able to stop the green shoots, whoever survives the year on the high street should have abetter year in 2010. WH Smiths is doing surprisingly well in the economic downturn and no one can really work out why, the chain essentially a very large Asian newsagents, everything they sell cheaper and more plentiful online. Although sales are down their cash flow and profitability remains good. It sells over-priced toys like Woollies did and it sells tons of stationary stuff like Woollies did. In fact the only real difference between the two is Smiths newsagent side...

Advantages: Enjoyable listening
Disadvantages: Will not appeal to everybody

There is a booklet giving details of the performers and details of the carols themselves included with the CD. I will admit to learning some things that I never knew about some of these carols. You will note that there are three versions of While Shepard's Watched, each with a different melodic line. These are all sung very clearly, You can hear all the words with great clarity. These may be called Folk music as it was the ordinary folk who sang these songs. Reading a magazine with out buying anything...the way of Smiths "

Advantages: Good "library" for students to read magazines, some good offers, nice staff
Disadvantages: Over priced, under stocked...in fact complete rip offs at times

...WHSmiths, a store here in Britain we've all been in and we all know the simple idea of the store, in which they sell media (magazines, books, DVD's and CD's), stationary, as well as the normal "counter goods" of sweets and drinks. However as it's fair to assume we are all to knowledgeable of, they sell them at a price that seems uncompetitive and highly over the odds in fact many wonder how the company makes any profit at all. Well for those like myself who will pick up a book or two a week, charities shops often seem the best place to get a book from, or even online, often undercutting Smith's price by at least 30%. This, it turns out often occurs with DVD's and CD's just because Smiths' seems to not only over price things, but they also fail to realise their over pricing things in a market that has exploded since they were founded...

The word on the Street

Advantages: Triumph name, price, looks, handling, engine etc etc
Disadvantages: No fairing so lack of weather protection
