Hills Science Plan with chicken
Advantages: Really noticeable results, my dogs love it
Disadvantages: More expensive than standard dog food
...We have 2 Springer Spaniels, aged 6 and 3. We tried lots of different varieties of food, both canned and dry before we settled on Hills a couple of years ago. It was recommended by our vet, who we thought was just after a commission as he sells it! But we gave it a go and the results really were noticeable and we haven't looked back.
Hills philosophy is to make pet foods to "enrich and lengthen the special relationships between people and their pets". I love my dogs so am a complete sucker for anything that will make them live longer!
They make a range of prescription foods to fight specific diseases, but thankfully we don't need those at present. We just use the regular 'science plan' version of the dry food, which provides balanced nutrition and seems to taste really good. (not that I've tried it personally!). I thought they would...

Hills Science Diet & Sens
Advantages: Cats like it, value for money, good for your moggies
Disadvantages: Not usually sold in smaller pet-shops
...I adopted 2 rescue cats last year - one overweight and one with a very sensitive stomach and Hills have managed to sort out both problems.
Fat Cat was on Hills Science Diet when we adopted her and we continued her on this (with the occasional treat) and she?s losing weight slowly, but it is staying off (which I think is a much better way to lose the extra poundage). The food comes in 2 flavours: Chicken and Tuna and now in a Senior edition - which is for cats over 7 years old. At the moment the Senior only comes in Chicken flavour.
Black Cat was a stray and so we didn?t know that he had a sensitive stomach when we adopted him. After trying a range of foods, from bland, fresh turkey and fish, to the mainstream cat foods such as Whiskas, Felix and Kit-e-Kat (both wet and dry complete foods) and the other Hills varieties (hairball...

Hills Science Plan not so good for our cats
Advantages: It seems to last longer, it is cheaper in the long run and there is no mess or waste
Disadvantages: Can have side effects for some cats, cause overweight and kidney problems, expensive
...A whole ago, OK, a long while ago, I wrote this article/review about Hills food as it was highly recommended by our vet. The fact that he insisted on how good this kind of dried food was and also due to the fact that it seemed to save us money I was convinced that it was the best solution for our cats feeding problems?.
But since then we?ve lost one of our cats due to ?sudden kidney problems? which the vet could not explain as it had checked him OK only a couple weeks ago, our other cat grew fatter and fatter and looked more like a football in thick fur and at the same time he developed sever kidney problems. Not only him but also our carpet, chairs, bed, sofa started to suffer as he seemed not to manage to get to a litter tray on time as he had to keep going every couple of minutes.
As at the same time both our cats seemed to...

Lifting the lid on bad science in the media
Advantages: Fascinating insight into media manipulation and disinformation
Disadvantages: Hard to read at times
...INTRODUCTION
Ms Larsbaby pointed me in the direction of this book which a friend of hers had read. The point of the book seemed to be to debunk myths around science and in particular the "pseudo-science" peddled by groups as diverse as nutritionists and journalists. Famous health stories would be examined in detail and taken apart where appropriate. My interest piqued, I had a look to see what all the fuss was about.
BRAIN GYMS, HOMEOPATHY AND NUTRITION
The author's targets in the book for peddlers of bad science are many and varied. He highlights some well known cases to highlight his point, though is at pains to point out that many other people are just as bad.
The book examines the Brain Gym initiative, promoted in schools as a way to improve children's results, but what is it actually based on? The findings...

Hills Science Plan Feline maintenence.
Advantages: complete food, seems well balanced, easy to store and serve
Disadvantages: Can be addictive, causing cats who snack to gain weight, High initial outlay.
...I first started feeding my cats Hills Science Plan Feline Maintenence when there was on offer in Petsmart for a free bag in exchange for empty tins of cat food. This was a very good offer, but now one of my cats will eat basically nothing but Hills.
While it seems like a lot to shell out - £11 for a 2Kg sack, if you follow the recommended feeding plan, the daily cost is less than feeding tinned food.
The food will keep for a while once opened as long as stored in dry cool conditions, and is easy to handle being just pellets. The recent replacement of the wax paper bag with a resealable top plastic one is good as it keeps the food from picking up moisture.
To sum up - the food is good and well liked by both my cats and the neighbour's one who sneaks in from time to time; just stick to the recommended feeding quantities if...

The Hills
Advantages: Funny, tacky
Disadvantages: None
...The Hills is my guilty little pleasure.
There's backstabbing, friendships, boyfriends, clubbing, making up, breaking up, in fact this programme has everything!
The Hills is actually a spin-off television series from the very popular show, Laguna Beach. This show followed a bunch of high school students through their life in Laguna Beach, California, a very affluent, beautiful area right on the coast of Southern California. One of the main characters was Lauren Conrad, often referred to as LC. She, in my opinion is quite a pretty, nice mannered girl, if somewhat spoilt. She has the clothes, looks, long blond hair and drives a very nice convertible car. I do like her and I think she is quite entertaining. She often seems to have a rough ride where some of her friends are concerned but that is life, and more importantly that is life...

Not Weird Science - Bad Science
Advantages: debunking some of medicine's myths & misinformations, funny read
Disadvantages: man on a mission and with an agenda but who can blame him
...Ben Goldacre is the very outspoken mouthpiece against really rubbish claims made by modern medicine or television charlatans. He is a medical doctor and journalist with a column in the Guardian newspaper with an uncanny bullsh*t detector second to none.
I can?t remember when I first came across his ways of thinking but it must have been when I was looking for an answer to Gillian McKeith, a woman that makes my neck hair stand on end, someone I find appalling to the n-th degree. Lately I have seen him voice his opinion on London?s 6 o?clock news regarding LBC?s Jenni Barnett and her rather stupid musings on the MMR back in January and the other week on Watchdog when he was asked what he thought about some modern detox products.
I bought the ?Bad Science? paperback when I was ordering a number of books from Amazon quite a few months back...

The London Science Museum
Advantages: Its free entry and your chilren learn as they play
Disadvantages: A nightmare to get to, very busy at peak times
...Science Museum
During the Easter holidays, hubby and I decided to take our children to The London Science Museum. Though it was a very long and tiring day, it was agreed we had an enjoyable time.
The museum was started in the nineteenth-century.
Its aim was to improve science and technical education. Prince Albert was the key figure in this development and he was responsible for the "Great Exhibition" of 1851. The buildings exterior looks aged and dated; if you walk around the rear of the museum there are various large craters in the concrete walls.
These were caused by bombing in the last war and were never repaired as a show of just how much damage was done but the building still did not disintegrate. A plaque on the wall commemorates the strength of the building and its part in sustaining the war...

A Sunday full of Science
Advantages: Never hearing yourself say "Don't touch that to the kids"
Disadvantages: An expensive day out and not fully functioning
...When I first moved to Glasgow just over 6 years ago and while working as a temp, I found myself working for the Director of Buildings on what was effectively the building site of the planned Glasgow Science Centre. Added to the fact that the centre was based on the science centre in Canada and designed by many of the same Canadian designers who had been responsible for the Toronto centre, I have always felt a strange sense of loyalty to what is now the Glasgow Science Centre. However, this does not mean I am blind to the defects of the project. I have decided to review the Glasgow Science Centre following several visits with my boys as a mum and a visitor and with an unbiased approach.
***First Impression***
The Glasgow Science Centre can be seen for some distance from almost any angle as you approach. The entire centre is made up...

Blinded with Science
Advantages: Super attractions that change regularly, ideal for kids, IMAX Cinema
Disadvantages: None
...I spend a lot of time in the London Science Museum, partly because it is now free to enter, and partly because I have a great love of all the sciences. Few places excite me as much as the thrill of a trip to the Science Museum. The museum is also open seven days a week between 10am and 6pm, which means it is possible to fit in visits around worktime.
Ths Science Museum is located in Exhibition Road in South Kensington and is accessible by many forms of public transport. I will give a more detailed list of directions at the end of the review.
Although the admission is free, you will still have to pay certain fees for different exhibitions and simulators. The Simex Simulator ride, IMAX 3D Cinema both carry an extra fee, along with quite a few other exhibitions so make sure you do take some money with you when you visit.
The museum...
