Making History Enjoyable
Review of The History Boys DVD by  Soho_Black

Advantages: An intelligently crafted film
Disadvantages: Extras not worth watching repeatedly

...When I sat down over Christmas 2007 to watch a BBC showing of "The History Boys", I did so with no real expectations. I was aware it was written by Alan Bennett, who was someone I was aware of, but whose work had largely passed me by. I also knew that it had started life as a highly successful play, but that was about the extent of my knowledge. I thought it would make for acceptable enough background noise as I read my book, never thinking that not only would the book be forgotten that night, but that the DVD would soon go straight onto my Amazon Wishlist and soon become part of my collection. In 1980s Sheffield, eight students at Cutler's Grammar School have gained the best A-Level results the school has ever seen. Keen to go to either Oxford or Cambridge Universities, they return for an extra term to study for the entrance exams... Read review

It's Got Its Psychologies All Wrong
Review of Psychologies by  clairus99

Advantages: Glossy
Disadvantages: Amateurish Writing

...I bought Psychologies magazine because I'm just into psychology and am at the moment considering whether or not to study it at university next year. It also allows me to wallow in my favourite subject - me. What you get, however, is this, unfortunately: Cosmo with a pair of specs and a bun. It is blatantly focussed on women - I don't mind that, I am a woman after all. But frankly there is nothing in there that I haven't seen in your better editions of Cosmo. Looking at the March 2006 edition's contents we have them asking Joely Richardson if she had a happy childhood and what her relationship with her mother is like, in nice easy bitesize paragraphs and lovely glossy pictures. The questioning is unimaginative and amateurish - not to mention obvious. It's as if someone thought, what would Freud have asked? The Letters... Read review

Psychology at Reading - a top-rated department
Review of Psychology by  orangepeel105

Advantages: Good reputation, wide range of module choices
Disadvantages: some disorganisation for joint honours students

...I studied a joint honours degree in Psychology and Philosophy at the University of Reading from 2004-2007. Reading Psychology department has a good reputation, which is what initially attracted me to the university. In the latest Teaching Quality Assessment excercise, Reading received an excellence rating of 24 out of 24. In addition to this, Reading was graded as one of the best 5* departments in the Research Assessment excercise. Furthermore, all single and joint honour degree programmes within the department are accredited by the British Psychological Society, allowing graduates elegibility for membership, which is vital for pursuit of any career within the field of Psychology. During my first year at the university I took the same modules as all single honours Psychology students. These included modules in developmental... Read review

A brilliant psychology
Review of Psychology: An Introduction - Sue Orrell, Nick Hayes by  LEIGHWHARTON

Advantages: Good Book
Disadvantages: None

...This book is brilliant if you want a excellent and comprehensive book on an introduction to psychology. I first used this book to complete a project on how the brain works and I found it to be very detailed and it also has great pictures to accompany the text that is written in this book. This book can be used as a textbook, for courses like GCSE psychology or GNVQ in health and social care. (I personally used it for both, I have also used this book for the HND course that I am presently on). Back to the book. At the beginning of the chapters in the book, it gives you a brief description of what is in the chapter, with key words that are highlighted in black. Then the author of the book goes in to that subject in a lot of detail covering all the key words that are bold. Throughout this book, there are blue highlighted... Read review

Very intersting but focuses on Cog Psychology
Review of Psychology by  georgie-girl

Advantages: course notes on web; good lecturers; good facilities
Disadvantages: Its a bit too focused on Cognitive Psychology

...I am studying BSc Psychology at Birmingham University... The course has been interesting, the workload is very light and they give you very few hours of timetabled lectures! There is a really strong focus on cognitive psychology - so be aware of that if you aren't too interested in it!! The first year offered the broadest base possible of different areas in psychology, from the basics of learning, to physiological psychology to child psychology. You also have to do Statistics, but it sounds scarier than it is. It's actual very straightforward! Unfortunately for my year, we were unable to choose any option in the second year, although we had been told we would get this chance! It meant we did no applied psychology and our attention was heavily focused on cognitive and physiological psychology. I am now in my fianal year... Read review

Social Psychology
Review of Social Psychology - David Myers by  LEIGHWHARTON

Advantages: Good Comprehensive Social Psychology Texbook
Disadvantages: None

...This book is brilliant if you want a excellent and comprehensive book on an introduction to social psychology. I first used this book to complete a project on social beliefs and I found it to be very detailed and it also has great pictures to accompany the text that is written in this book. This book can be used as a textbook, for courses like GCSE or A Level psychology or GNVQ in health and social care. (I personally used it for both, I have also used this book for the HND course that I am presently on). I think this book could also be used for people/ students who want a more detailed introduction into social psychology. Back to the book. This book has four main parts, containing 13 chapters and there is a part to this book that contains Modules: Social Psychology Applied. The book has thirteen chapters, which are: 1... Read review

Psychology (5th Edition) - Gleitman et al.
Review of Psychology - Henry Gleitman by  disneyeyes

Advantages: comprehensive introductory text
Disadvantages: expensive (but textbooks usually are)

...I recently completed the Graduate Conversion Diploma in Psychology, a year long course which leads to graduate registration with the British Psychological Society - an essential requirement for those wishing to pursue a professional qualification as a psychologist. At level 1 (equivalent to 1st year BSc) it was recommended that if we were to shell out money on any book, then this was the one to go for. Psychology textbooks are expensive (rarely under 30 pounds) and, although I did buy some others, I generally managed by using the (luckily for me) well-stocked library. But this book was definitely a good one to have on the shelf at home. It's an introductory level text - a key accompaniment to the level 1 (or 1st year BSc) curriculum. It's a hefty tome with 19 chapters divided over 5 sections: Action, Cognition, Social Behaviour... Read review

Psychology I can't relate to
Review of Psychology by  rolletrog

Advantages: It's at Lancaster University
Disadvantages: It's in the Psychology department

...This is only a quick review as I attended Lancaster Uni 3 years ago now and I bet it's changed a little. I can't tell you course info now or ratio of exam to coursework now or much really, but I can give an opinion cos it was probably the best, most informative, most difficult, most exhausting and most fun 3 years of my life! The Psychology department was out of date - poor computer room, limited research space and time, decaying corridors... The staff ranged in their usefulness - remember it's a university and getting the maximum from your time there is essential - you've only one shot at getting that 2:1 or 1st and some tutors were next to useless whilst others went out of their way to point you in the right direction. Some lecturers put all their material on the intraweb whilst others merely read out their OHTs during the lecture... Read review

MSc Research Methods in Psychology
Review of Psychology & Sociology by  racheldarcy

Advantages: Excellent course
Disadvantages:

...This is an excellent course for both students who wish to obtain BPS recognition for their first degree as well as students who have already got recognition. It teaches you everything you need to know about conducting research in psychology from choosing what research to carry out, to designing studies, data collection and analysis and reporting findings. As statistics plays a key role there are many statistics classes which start at a simple level for those people who can't remember everything from those first year stats classes and then builds up to give you a complete overview of every test you will need to know. The course also teaches you many different ways of collecting data. One of the best things is that there are no exams!! The course is assessed by a series of assignments and a final dissertation. I would highly recommend... Read review
