The unpleasant side of history.

Advantages: A good way for kids to learn history
Disadvantages: It's all true

I have not read these but if they are like my set then they are well worth a read. All the books in the set are easy and fun to read and a must for the children's book shelf. American History X

Advantages: Great plot, superb characters and a theme that needed to be discussed
Disadvantages: violent

.... However, I would totally defend the film because to me it's actually a good piece of art. Rather than making a lovely dove semi violent movie, the director when for the honest and brutal truth about the Aryan gangs, the racial hatred in the world and what can happen in prison (if you bend down for the soap). Quick Info on the Director: Tony Kaye is actually an English Director born in London, 1952. Unfortunately American History X was his only feature film, which to me was a real shame is this film really bought out the best in the director, but he stuck around directing music videos and continued doing lower key documentaries and so on. The Secret History

Advantages: Fantastically well written book with great characters
Disadvantages: Occasionally too much Latin or Greek being discussed

Making History Enjoyable

Advantages: An intelligently crafted film
Disadvantages: Extras not worth watching repeatedly

But in a nod to the age of their subject matter, there are pre-war songs from the likes of Gracie Fields and a superb version of "Bewitched", sung by Samuel Barnett as Posner, which underlined the gay love story between him and Dakin wonderfully. The whole sub-plot might have had too much screen time at the expense of other potentially interesting storylines within the film, but it was a wonderfully told and acted love story.
