...We purchased a Hitachi 28" Pure Flat Screen TV in the January 2003 sales. A bargain reduced from £600 to £389. Unfortunately by February 2004 we had a problem with it. A grey screen with wavey diagonal lines and it kept turning itself off after about 5 seconds. Anyway - stupid like we didnt take the extended guarantee - which i would advise everyone to do - if you can afford it obviously. The TV was taken away by a local engineer and basically needed some extensive welding and it cost us £170 and we were left without the TV for 3 weeks. Well we werent happy as you can imagine so we tried to contact Hitachi. We telephoned our local Miller Brothers store who supplied it and they only had a fax number for Hitachi - nothing else !!! So I searched the web and found a few addresses and forward the original reciept...

Scoring a Hit-achi With The Scullery Maid

Advantages: Very neat - seemingly a lot of kit for the money
Disadvantages: Noisy FM in weak reception areas. Choosy CD player

Hitachi CX68 MP3/CD + Radio - Tough Little Beast

Advantages: Good tone quality, looks, reliability and functions
Disadvantages: no cassette player facility

...I wanted a portable CD player for my home-office desk, because I found that playing CDs on my computer whilst I was working seemed to use up memory and sometimes caused my computer to crash. This Hitachi punches above its weight

Advantages: Smaller, lighter television, with the same picture size.

DAB radio with stereo speakers and a good price.

Advantages: Excellent features, good stereo speakers. Includes FM.
Disadvantages: Ugly as sin. No proper carry handle. Could use more connectors.

...MP3 file you downloaded from some dodgy web site. Only BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM are given more room to breathe and give sound quality which might be better than FM. This isn't just a matter of opinion, you can look up the figures and see that the UK has the lowest DAB sound quality in the world. So why bother at all? Well some broadcasters work really hard to work with the technical limitations of UK DAB transmissions. By very careful encoding of the signal and attention to detail, some radio stations are not too bad. Not as good as FM of course, but not too bad. You might not hear the poor sound quality when using speakers for example, and if you're not too fussy it might even be good enough on headphones. The channel "Chill" for example really is quite acceptable, whereas "Virgin" sounds ghastly. The Hitachi has an FM radio...
