Düsseldorf - That's Living Alright!
Advantages: Fun, scenic, eclectic, plenty of culture and loads of Altbier
Disadvantages: Can be fairly pricy, limited accommodation types
...Its name may translate as the 'village on the Dussel' but these days it's hard to imagine Düsseldorf as anything other than a sprawling modern metropolis; it blends almost imperceptibly with nearby Duisberg and Dortmund and is just a stone's throw from magnificent Cologne to the south. Düsseldorf has almost 600,000 inhabitants but merits just three pages or so in my massive Rough Guide to Germany...

Advantages: Excellent value specials; lots of fish dishes if you like them
