...of a Greek island. Our accommodation was basic, but we did have the benefit of interconnecting rooms; our children effectively had an apartment to themselves with a separate bathroom. It seemed to me though that the standard of sanitation hadn't improved much since we were last in Greece, approximately 10 years ago. We still couldn't flush paper down the toilet, for example. Still, we had four beds and a cot between us, and two balcony areas which were to come in very useful. I think we struggled to begin with staying in a hotel full-board. On previous holidays we've enjoyed exploring a town and finding restaurants ourselves. Here the choice was....well not much of a choice at all really. The green green grass of Greece.

Advantages: Much greener than greek islands in the east,some traditionally greek,not bad prices
Disadvantages: Can be rainy,some resorts overdeveloped

Advantages: Nice sweet film, romantic comedy
Disadvantages: Not the best romantic comedy I have seen, some may find it too sickly sweet!

Fourka in Halkidiki (Greece)

Advantages: Gorgeous weather, fantastic people, great scenery
Disadvantages: Could perhaps do with a bit of a tidy up in places ?!

...My boyfriend and I wanted a cheap holiday - a week in the sun where we could relax and do not a lot basically! We booked an internet deal through Thompson Holidays for £190 each (incl. flights, transfers and accomodation) for a week in Self Catering appartments. Our flights were from Birmingham to Thessaloniki (which is the nearest airport to Halkidiki). The flight took around 3 hours and we then had an hour and a half transfer from the airport to our resort - Fourka. Halkidiki is split into three penisulars, Kassandra, Sithonia and Mount Athos. These are near the north of main land Greece and are surrounded by the Aegean Sea. Kassandra and Sithonia are supposed to be the livliest of the three, although they are not busy or crowded. seriously UPDATED... my holiday heaven

Advantages: Too many to mention here!
Disadvantages: Some people may find not enough nightlife.

With the impending Olympic Games and the advent of the Euro, prices have gone up in Greece, but it is still on average cheaper than here (especially eating out, petrol and other luxury things). This can be a budget holiday destination. As for flights, well, I'm afraid I couldn't say as I haven't flown, but it does also depend on the season. My recommendations: Beaches: Antisamos and Platys/Makrys Gialos and also the lovely, quite quiet and secluded Avithos (complete with gorgeous - and I mean gorgeous - umbrella guy). Restaurants: Expensive: Dendrinos in Agia Evfimia, Captain's Table in Argostoli. Cheaper: Patsouras in Argostoli and Tsilikos souvlaki bar for the ultimate cheap yummy snack food (at 6Eur, or about £4 a plate, we couldn't finish it). The Holiday - a good chick flick

Advantages: Lighthearted, good cast

...The Holiday is a chick flick type film although it is not quite your normal chick flick. It is based around the story of two girls , Amanda, played by Cameron Diaz and Iris played by Kate Winslet. Amanda is a film trailer producer who has just broke up with her boyfriend, she lives in LA. Iris lives in Surrey in a little cottage and is a writer for a paper. She is still in love with her ex boyfriend who she works with and has just found out he is getting engaged. Amanda starts searching on the Internet for some sort of holiday to get away and try and forget what has happened. ...The Holiday- I tried to get to see his at the cinema but i unfortunately missed out. Although after reading the reviews it was a mixed opinion, so as soon as it came out i purchased it so that i could judge for myself and its a great film. With Kate Winslet, Jack Black, Jude Law and Cameron Diaz it was an all star cast and a hopeless romantic film a definate chich flick. Its about Iris(Kate Winslet) who is in love with a man who is about to marry another woman and then thee is Amanda (cameron Diaz) who realizes the man she lives with has been unfaithful. ...with her boyfriend but finds out he has been cheating on her, she is also heart broken and decides she needs to get away from it all and looks into booking a holiday. While trawling through the internet Amanda finds Iris' house being advertised on a house swap website and they both agree to swap houses over the Christmas period. Kefalos, Kos, Greece

Advantages: cheap to eat out, nice weather and clear blue sea and plenty of water sports
Disadvantages: People of Kos don't seem to like tourists, Windy

...a car or scooter here as they're everywhere. We didn't hire so I can't tell you how much this is and the reason we didn't hire was because they do drive like maniacs in Greece even 14 yr old boys racing on their scooters so do beware of this if you are going to greece. My boyfriend did get up very early one morning to go to the ancient market but I wanted a lie in! He said it was nice and this would be ideal for the historians among us. There he also saw lizards.
