...I am a member of Holmes Place in Cricklewood for nearly a year now and for my purpose it is the perfect club. It is very important that you know how you intend to use the gym you are joining. Is it to workout at machines , workout classes or the pool? That is something you should be sure of. First step in Cricklewood, like almost everywhere else, is that you can have a look at the various areas they have to offer you. Unfortunately there is mostly never a chance for a trial day. I can offer you a little inside and hopefully some tips in how to get the most out of your membership. The joining fee is very high, depending on special offers between 50 and 200 pounds. Holmes Place Croydon - a place to call home

Advantages: Great location and easy acess to trams, buses and rail
Disadvantages: I am soon to change jobs and the town in which i will be working doesnt have a Holmes Place! a huge shame!

...Having been a total virgin to all gyms, health clubs and fitness centres up until just over two years ago, I now find myself reluctant to leave, like a child clinging to its mothers skirt! When i started work in Croydon, i joined Holmes Place as a founder member when it first opened as part of a Corporate Membership. Very reluctant to pay what i thought then to be a phenomenal amount of money (£54 per month), for facilities that I calculated I would use, on average, 3 weeks out of 12 months(namely post-xmas), but with high hopes that the expense would induce me to visit the gym at least a couple of times a month! Needless to say that upon joining I now feel that it is home from home and spend on average 3-4 days/evenings a week down at Holmes Place. (That is a considerable amount of time for someone that lives a good 30 mins train...

Holmes Place health club/gym, Nottingham

Advantages: Impressive, clean, well equiped and luxurious. Mixed and female gym, free towels, good range classes.
Disadvantages: Can be very busy at peak times, especially the pool.

.... The classes run off a timetable and there is something for everybody from yoga to spinning from beginner level to advanced. Towels are provides free of charge and everybody uses them which I say is a major plus, as there's nothing worse than having to use a piece of equipment with someone elses sweat all over it! Water fountains are all over the place so you can rehydrate frequently. A good selection of weights, dumbells and mats for floorwork are available too, including those abshaper crunch frames. The one thing I think that stands out the most about this club is the pool. It is big, serene, relaxing and very clean. It almost feels like you are in a 5 star resort in the carribbean! The Place to be?

Advantages: Convenient Location, Overall reasonable range of facilities
Disadvantages: Keen to raise prices though

...I've been a member of Holmes Place in Maidenhead now for some years. It's conveniently located for me near to work, so it's an ideal place to go at lunchtime to prevent me wandering around the shops and frittering my money on things I don't really need. There are two types of membership - peak and off peak. Peak means you can go in whenever you want, and off peak restricts you to being able to go in any time during weekdays up to 4.30pm and any time at weekends. Up until last month I was paying £44 a month for off peak membership. I understand that peak membership is £48 a month but this is for corporate membership. Membership is higher still for non-corporate members. I'm lucky, because my medical insurance now allows me membership at £25 a month peak, which is significantly cheaper. Holmes from home?

Advantages: Huge number of machines, lovely pool, nice changing rooms
Disadvantages: Pricier than other gyms, no automatic weights machines, close to fast food outlets!

I joined Holmes Place five months ago after having been a member of a Birmingham city centre gym for two and a half years. (Before then, I was a certified couch potato) I chose Holmes Place Star City as it's close to my new job and I was impressed by the facilities it offers during my initial visit there. A very early Holmes adventure on the movie screen

Advantages: It is Sherlock Holmes!
Disadvantages: Dated and a bit theatrical

...In the world of Sherlock Holmes there are two very well known screen portrayals of Conan Doyle?s immortal detective. Jeremy Brett on the TV screen in the 80?s and 90?s and Basil Rathbone on the cinema screen in the 40?s. There have been many other versions of the character in both formats but most of them are lesser versions, unable to match the style and quality of these two. Before even Rathbone played Holmes though there was a British series of Holmes films starring one Arthur Wontner. The Triumph of Sherlock Holmes was made in 1935 and is one of five Holmes films made in the thirties starring Wontner. One of these is lost forever, a second is rarely seen but the other three are all available on DVD very cheaply. ...My wife and I stayed at Holm house in July 2008 for our wedding anniversary. It was a fantastic, long weekend of indulgence and luxury. The emphasis is most definitely on quality. At roughly midnight on the evening before we arrived, I remembered that I hadn't ordered any flowers for my better half. An e-mail and 10 minutes later, and job done. A member of staff had returned my e-mail and informed me he would personally get some flowers when the florist opened in the morning. Holm house is located in Marine Parade in Penarth. It's a quirky 12 room luxury spa/boutique, built in the 1920's with new found wealth. In fact most of the properties along Marine Parade look like they were built for the very wealthy. Advantages: Beautifully restored versions of the greatest Holmes and Watson of all time
