...The Simpsons - Classics - The Last Temptation Of Homer is a compilation of episodes with one recurring theme, this one being Homer, the head of the Simpsons household who loves his family, almost as much as he loves doughnuts and Duff Beer. The four episodes included are "One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish", "Simpson And Delilah", "Colonel Homer" and "Homer Alone". "One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish" is as far away from the wacky Simpsons people know as is possible. Homer goes to a sushi bar and eats some blowfish that hadn't been cut properly and is given a day to love by Dr. Hibbert. Confronted with this news, Homer makes a list of things he always wanted to do, and tries to do them all before his time runs out. A very touching episode that deals with death very respectfully, you see Homer larking around with his friends...

Advantages: Weird, whacky, wonderful and very very funny
Disadvantages: None to be found

...burst onto the scene in the States, but they quickly earned the right to their own regular 20-30 minute programme. Many predicted a pretty short life for this new cartoon, and I know my early acquaintance left me feeling decidedly unimpressed, but over the last decade they have burst their way through to world domination and I have become a fully fledged convert to the series and can simply not get enough of it. The series is based on the lives of the Simpson family, which lives in Springfield. Another great Simpsons box set

Advantages: Another superb Simpsons box set
Disadvantages: None

...I've got most of the Simpsons season box sets so didn't hesitate to purchase the Season 6 box set, which contains a massive 25 episodes, as well as commentaries for every episode, commercials and deleted scenes. Season 6 is one of the best seasons of the Simpsons, the others being season 4, 7 and 8. Of course these episodes are very old, as the DVD boxsets are being released very slowly, with all of these episodes at least 10 years old. A lot of great highlights come from these 25 episodes, including Lisa becoming competitive in Lisa On Ice, Bart accusing Ned of murder in Bart of Darkness and the hugely popular Who Shot Mr Burns part 1 episode. ...of this particular show. Homer as always is just brilliant, and is matched as always by the incomparable Bart, but remove them for the plot ( what little there was of it ) and the whole movie completely fails, they hold it together just. There is nothing in this movie which makes it stand out from any of the TV episodes, with the possible exception of Spider Pig, it's a pretty much run of the mill Simpson's episode which has been extended a bit, but still worth a viewing as any Simpson's episode or Movie does....

A typical day in the life of Homer J. Simpson

Advantages: Great comedy, hardly a dull moment
Disadvantages: Number of times it's repeated can be annoying

..., and invited me out for some bowling, and I gladly accepted. Ahhhh, bowling, one of the past times to get me away from the hell of parenthood! I bowled a perfect game! WOOHOOOOOO! After the bowling, Lenny, Karl and myself went to Moe's Tavern for a few rounds of Duff Beer. You can't get enough of that wonderful Duff! After many drinks, I head for home. I manage to get in the door, but then I trip over the house dog, Santa's leittle helper, and I trod on the cats' (Snowball II) tail, so the cat ran off. Head into the kitchen for a little midnight snack of the Homer Simpson special waffle wrapped in a stick of butter, then its off to bed. The kids are all tucked in and asleep, and Marge is reading. I get into bed, and fall asleep. Maybe I'll do the same tomorrow..." This isn't a scrath on what Homer faces every day. So many stupid things...

Doh... not that Homer...

Advantages: Epic story, excellent translation, scholarly work
Disadvantages: Not an easy read

...** Please note that the book I am reviewing is the Penguin Classics edition, ISBN 0-14-044556-0, translated by D.C.H.Rieu and first published in 1991. ** Homer's Odyssey is reckoned as one of the earliest works of Western literature (the book's back cover says it is the second, after Homer's other famous work, The Iliad. That book chronicled of course the Trojan Wars, but the Odyssey follows one of the heroes of that campaign, Odysseus, as he tries to return home. (Made just ever so slightly more difficult due to the Gods being against him, being slightly miffed as they are by his previous behaviour. Odysseus blinded the Cyclops, which rather upset the god Poseidon, who thereafter decided to make life very difficult for him.) Well actually that's just one half of the book - the other is of Odysseus' son Telemachus on his search...

The Simpsons!

Advantages: A story that we havnt seen before on tv
Disadvantages: It's not very long

...for the advertisement of the film and commentary from the producers and the animators. The film begins with Lisa & her new friend Colin trying to clean up the lake. They get it back to tip-top standard only to have homer dump a silo full of pig waste into it making Springfields pollution levels once again rocket, this in turn leads to the town being enclosed in a large glass dome. The towns people go after Homer but the Simpson family luckily escape and go on the run. However when they find out a bomb will we dropped on their town the problems really begin.... Will they return? Will they town be saved? Are the Simpsons gone from Springfield forever? This movie has won several awards, the award for Best Comedy Film (British Comedy Awards), Best Movie (UK Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards) and Best Animation (ITV National Movie Awards). The Simpsons movie

Advantages: great family fun and hilarious scenes

...convince the town to clean up the polluted local lake. When the ever so bald and podgy Homer, (voiced by Dan Castellaneta) rescues a pig from the towns restaurant he decides to keep it as a pet, collecting its faeces and storing it in a silo in his back garden. With the silo overflowing Marge tells him to get rid of its contents properly. Homer, in his typical state of mind, 'accidentally' drops the silo into the freshly cleaned lake, re-polluting it. When word reaches the white house about the pollution crises in Springfield the president decides to take some rather strange but drastic action to protect the rest of America. Then, facing the wrath of the people of Springfield, Homer and the rest of the Simpsons clan have to flee for their lives before the angry mob rip them limb from limb. ...There can't be too many people that need introducing to TV's most dysfunctional TV family but just in case there is I will begin by saying that they are an animated family that live in Springfield, somewhere in the United States. Mother to their three children, is bright blue haired Marge, father is the slob like Homer whilst the three children are Bart, Lisa and baby Maggie. The Simpson's cartoons have been screened regularly in the UK on both Sky One and Channel 4. Over 400 individual episodes of these 25 minute long cartoons have been made and this number is still rising. A full length movie version is something that had been in the pipeline for quite a few years. Unlike most animated cartoons the Simpsons are not entirely aimed at children, they have a huge adult fan base and their use of witty double entendres make them work...

...The Simpsons: Sex, Lies and the Simpsons is a collection of four episodes from "The Simpsons", each with a romantic theme. These four episodes are "The Last Temptation Of Homer", "Bart After Dark", "New Kid On The Block" and "Lisa's Rival". In "The Last Temptation Of Homer", a new employee is hired at the nuclear plant, who seems to take an interest in Homer. Meanwhile, Bart becomes an outcast after being given huge black glasses, special shoes and a throat spray that makes him sound a lot like Jerry Lewis. A funny episode, but also a serious look at Homer and Marge's relationship and how Homer acts when he is attracted to someone else.
