VFR 400 NC24 Honest review!

Advantages: Engine,handling,sound.
Disadvantages: collector box, charging circuit,parts availability.

...Right........ i purchased my VFR a month or so ago, allthough i also owned one about 5 years ago as well, i have owned a wide variety of bikes since i was 16, so i think im pretty used to good and bad points of bikes! I,ll start from the front and work backwards! Front wheel is 16 inch, which is a pain due to the fact that there is a limited tyre choice, my bike has bridgestone battleaxe bt45s which i dont really like, allthough this maybe the fact im not used to the bike yet! The front forks are very soft, (probably due to this beeing a jap import bike and beeing built for 8st japanese people not 14stone lads like myself!) but this isnt really a problem in every day use. As far as i can gather from forums and my previous ownership fork seals dont fail very often. Steering head bearngs seem to be fine as these bikes dont get...

Review of Honda VFR400 NC24

VFR 800 VTEC (ABS) - tremendous commuter

Advantages: Ride comfort, handling, excellent braking system, feels planted
Disadvantages: Slightly larger fuel tank would make this a 100% perfect machine

...almost the same size tanks and 3 - 4 litre reserves and the pan european has a massive 29 litre fuel tank, I just wish Honda had made the VFR tank 25 litres or maybe given a reserve tank of 3 - 4 litres over the std 22 litre tank. Not a complaint though - I'll simply have to move house closer to work as I don't see me falling out of love with this perfect commuting / touring machine for a while yet. So 98 out of 100 for Honda - if it had a couple of extra litres fuel tank capacity it'd be 100 / 100 no problem....

...How did Honda do it? Back in 1986 when the VFR750 was first introduced Honda was on the slippery slope to motorcycle oblivion. They had proved to one and all that they couldn't make a reliable V4 engine. The early eighties V4 engined models, the VF500 and VF750, both blew up if ridden hard, and wore cam chains out at an alarming rate regardless Honda's in line four cylinder bikes were failing in comparison to faster rivals from Suzuki, and more reliable bikes from Kawasaki. The smaller bikes in the range were dying a death too, Yamaha and new Italian manufacturers taking over Honda's bread and butter market with aplomb. In short the big H's motorcycle arm was in big trouble. Then along came the VFR 750 and everything changed. VFR400 nc24 nothing too far off a dream

Advantages: speed, handling, price
Disadvantages: age, import

...hondas and the after market ones are spot on. the only reason this bike gets bad reviews are because they brought out a newer model (nc30) that is lighter, better power and has a better exhaust setup. but still for half the price i settled for the nc24. as long as you buy a reasonable milage and well kept nc24 you will have no problems. check the exhaust! this will be the money looser if not in good cond. parts are difficult but being old there cheap and many are being broken for spares....

Very Fast Red used bike

I've had mine for 18 months now , it being a late model 750, made just before the fuel injected 800 was produced. Guaranteed to make me grin!

Advantages: Good handling and looks

...Motor bikes never appealed to me when I was younger. I was always far more interested in cars and after a few pathetic attempts to ride a bike in my teens I decided that was it. Honda Civic

Advantages: Fuel economy, performance, accommodation, dealer friendliness.
Disadvantages: Minor niggles, servicing cost can be high, rattles.

Our local Perth dealer (Weir Honda) were offering what was a nearly new car with around £1500 off the new price. We knew from looking at comparative prices that this was a good deal and managed to get mudflaps and carpet mats fitted as well. Broadly the experience has been very good - the dealer has been helpful in sorting out several minor problems. These were rattle in top end of the engine (a minor adjustment), a missing jacking point on the rear nearside, a silencer which gave out after 2 years' use, squeaky ventilation fan and a stuck sunroof (x2). How grateful I was that my limited budget narrowed-down the choice of bikes (get behind me, irony) and, I was able to dismiss whole categories of bikes as inappropriate - ie cruisers in the Harley mould and trail style bikes. Nought wrong with them, but not for me. The current Mrs Oedipus was all for riding pillion and the option of a European tour was also in our mind so the choice was really between a tourer and a sports-tourer. It took all of about ten minutes (and I'm slow) for me to settle on the Honda Interceptor (known in the UK as the VFR800FI, a much catchier name, you'll agree). If you're scouring for a bike you could do a lot worse than first checking out the motorcyclenews.com site for a review and specs then hot footing off to the newsagents...
