...I started to use the Keratex Hoof Hardener when my one horse (who doesnt wear shoes) started to get brittle feet and tiny cracks started to appear. A few other people on my hard were using it and when my farrier came out to trim him he recommended it to me but just to use until there was a shown improvement in the feet. I went along to my local shop and bought a bottle (its not cheap) and started to apply it daily when his feet were dry. The smell is pleasant to start off with and then it gets pungent! Strengthens poor quality hoof walls so that shoes stay on tight and allows lightly worked horses to remain sound without shoes. It does not produce a surface coating thereby allowing the hoof to breathe and function naturally and works by improving and strengthening the molecular structure of hoofwalls and soles. Review of Effol Hoof Oil

Marquis SuperGrip Hoof Boots easy to use and horse loved them

Advantages: hard wearing and easy to fit
Disadvantages: never wore them to ride in as my horse was retired

...I was looking for a way to help my aged horse, cope with being barefoot and came across the Supergrip Hoof Boots. In my opinion I found them to be a good send. I remember the first day he wore them. I found them quite easy to put on after try other makes, having to walk along a loose stoney road to get to the field, he usually tip toed and took ages, however with these boots he had a new lease of life and he was bouncing along the road, got into the field and went cantering off to the other horses. Paint my toes, useful of cosmetic?

Advantages: Looks nice, may enhance condition.

...I am not one for frequently oiling my horses hooves, but I do sometimes and Effol is the brand that I use. It has lasted me years, partly because I don`t use it much and partly because a little goes a long way. My farrier doesn`t advocate oiling, so is there any point? What is Oiling? * * * * * * * * * * * When you oil your horses hooves, you make sure they are clean and paint the oil all over the hooves with a brush. It is sometimes easy to miss the inner corner, so I tend to paint the inner sides when I am doing the opposite hoof and then the remainder when I go around the other side. Not exactly hoof hard - Nailene

Advantages: A waxy cream that does soak in and soften cuticles
Disadvantages: Not sure if it actually does harden nails

...Nailene HARD NAILS WHAT DO YOU GET WHEN YOU BUY THIS ? The product comes in a smallish pot attached to a car backing with a plastic , impossible to get off without scissors, cover. The instructions and ingredients are all listed on the back of the card which you have to cut off in order to access the small pot. On the white plastic pot you find a silver/grey lid with the product?s name and then ?Professional Legendary Hoof Formula? also in black print. The pot is quite large but once you open it you realise that the bottom half is hollow and the product only fills about half the pot which is a bit sneaky I felt. Supergrips are Super Boots!

...I made the decision to keep my ponies unshod in August last year. As I wanted to keep them in full work (one is a driving pony and covers several miles a day on the roads) I decided that hoof boots were going to be needed. After doing lots of research I came across the Marquis Supergrips, and I can honestly say they are fantastic. Although the initial purchase price may seem quite steep (£150ish), all of the parts are replaceable. So whereas with other hoof boots, when the sole is too worn you need to throw them away and start again, with the Marquis you can simply order a new pair of soles (£18ish). This I feel will save a lot of money in the long term. ...Firstly the picture is wrong - this is a picture of saddle soap not the hoof oil which is liquid and comes in a tin container. This product has been going for many years at least 30 and is the traditional style hoof oil and that is why I prefer it. Many of the modern versions are solid so quite hard to apply and very expensive. This is made from vegetable oils and you can get it in two colours black and natural. I have natural. Its cheap at about £4 a tin and it last for several months or more if you dont use it every day - I don't I use it about once a week, more in the summer if I am going to competitions and when its hot and his hooves get a bit dry.
