...Although the age-old adage is don't judge a book by its cover, I am not a huge believer in this. I feel that in the modern world where there is such a vast amount of literature out there, the cover of a book has to be important in your choice of whether to select that book from the pile to then read the blurb (unless the book has been recommended in which case the cover is most likely unimportant. Hope has a very simple spine, in a blue-y purple with the title Hope written in black, squared letters, the author's name (Glen Duncan) in white in the same fount though smaller. There is also a grey scale picture running through the letters which at first glance doesn't look like much, but on closer inspection turns out to be two naked figures, one male, one female, as a profile shot, showing the two chests and torsos pressed against each...

Begin to Hope

Advantages: Quirky, charming, emotive vocals, great songwriting
Disadvantages: None

...Regina Spektor follows in a long line of kooky female singer songwriters - Kate Bush, Fiona Apple and Tori Amos to name but a few - and in my opinion when it comes to singer songwriters, the wackier the better. Begin to Hope is her third studio album and second major label release and should have been the album that catapulted her to worldwide fame. Although I'd be pushed to say it quite achieved that (after all, how many of you are reading this thinking "oh yes, Regina Spektor, I know her well") it did give her a more widespread following, with airplay on Radio Two and even a slot on Jonathan Ross's chatshow. Regina Spektor was born in Moscow but grew up in New York, and this cultural mix is reflected clearly in the eclectic mix of styles she employs. Is Hope always a good thing?

...Even though I have a huge pile of books in my bedroom waiting to be read, I can't resist accepting the big piles of books my mum brings me everytime she comes to visit me! When she came last month for my birthday, she brought with her another 4 books, 2 of which were by the author Lucy Clare, whom I hadn't heard of before. After browsing the back of the books to see which I liked, I decided that Hoping for Hope sounded different to the usual books I would read so that is the one I read first. Liddy Claver is sure that her weight gain and fatigue are symptoms of the menopause, after all she's about to turn 50 but she decides to check it out with her doctor. But Liddy gets the shock of her life when her doctor informs her it isn't the menopause - she's pregnant, and due in just 2 months. Liddy is horrified - she's got 3 grown up...

Hope Sinks

Advantages: Breezy performances
Disadvantages: Seen it all a million times before

...Caught in a moment of weakness, brought on by lack of sleep and boredom, I suffered a lapse in judgement and watched 2003's 'Hope Springs'. Expecting it at worst to be enjoyable fluff, and with a pretty inviting cast list, I didn't expect to want to be hammering nails into my eyes after the first hour. Colin Firth, Heather Graham and Minnie Driver, with Mary Steenburgen in support add much needed class to a project initiated in the bowels of hell. How many hands would one require to count love-triangle romantic comedies on? Kali might even struggle, as would Dr Octopus. In a world inundated with these films, especially when all the good ones were committed to celluloid between 1930 and 1960, it's difficult to credit how 'Hope Springs' got the green light. Get the green light it did though and writer/director Mark Herman adapts...

Hope's Fistful of LED's?

...on the Hope light and some other LED lights is the use of a collimated lens, which significantly improves beam spread. And our Hope? The Hope Vison has a single LED emitter producing 240 lumens on max power. It's bright. It's main feature however is rather than having an integral battery, it instead runs on 4 AA batteries. On the one hand you get greater flexibility, but on the other you have to buy batteries for your light, as none are included. You also get a handlebar bracket, rubber adaptors for over-size and standard bars, a helmet mount, and a lanyard to go round your wrist. Hope is all my skin has!

Advantages: Absorbs quickly, light, non-greasy, moisturises well
Disadvantages: Expensive, skin appearance didn't change

...I had seen this product on QVC a few times, and really wanted to try it, but could never quite justify the price. I then saw that QVC were selling a kit which contained five different Philosophy products including a half size of this Hope in a Jar cream for about £25 so decided to treat myself to it. There seemed to be a lot of hype around this cream. When Oprah was accused of having a facelift, she apparently went on TV and said that it wasn't surgery, it was Hope in a Jar. Every time I saw this on QVC, I would fall for they marvellous praise that they gave this cream - 'it's make-up optional - you'll look so good you can go without make-up', 'all the celebrities use it' etc... Not only that, but I think I convinced myself that if it cost that much then it must be fabulous, otherwise people wouldn't buy it. Anyway, onto...

...Looking through my sisters extensive DVD collection on a Sunday afternoon I came across ‘Hope Springs’. I had never seen this film before but just from looking at the DVD cover it immediately appealed to me. Why? Because it has a picture of Colin Firth on the front. Ever since Bridget Jones he has become one of my favourite actors. Hope springs was released in 2003 and the Dvd came out earlier this year. It is rated 12 and it does contain some mild bad language.
