The Hostel from Hell

Advantages: Sex and gore if you like it
Disadvantages: Sex and gore if you don't

...After wondering over to the cinema in the freezing cold and pouring rain, my friend and I were forced to accept that there simply was not a single film on at a decent time that we were likely to really enjoy. Neither of us had seen many trailers recently and we did not want to risk forking out £7 for a film we might not even like. Instead we decided to head home and just watch a DVD at her place. She has plenty of films that she enjoys watching again and again, and I have seen very few of those DVDs and was in the mood for some sort of horror. She recommended this film, and since I had been wondering what the weird trailers were about and why it was the subject of jokes on one of my favourite TV shows recently, I was keen to see it. I used to be quite a fan of the horror genre, but these days it is more just something I occasionally feel...

Horror at the Hostel

Advantages: Gore fans will love this, there are disgusting displays of death galore.
Disadvantages: The film lacks substance, relies heavily on shock value and little else is offered.

...Released in 2006, 'Hostel' was the third film directed by Eli Roth. Having heard good things and previously loved 'Cabin Fever' which Roth also directed I had been really looking forward to seeing this film, when I saw it however I felt nothing but disappointment. Many had praised the film for its gory and grotesque nature, and yes Eli Roth does indeed forefront blood and guts quite freely here but really there is very little substance to this film whatsoever. I like my horror films to have a bit of depth, something about them that makes them stand out as sensational; nothing of this sort is apparent here and 'Hostel' is a purely visual display of disgusting deaths. Three men are here backpacking through Europe, two of which are American and the other is from Iceland. Paxton and Josh are the two Americans, and Oli is Icelandic. They...

Hostel Endeavours

Advantages: Some nice cinematography, decent acting during tense moments
Disadvantages: boobs and gore but little substance, just too nasty

...So it now appears that Eli Roth is so lauded in cinema that he can present his films with his name before them. Such is the case with Eli Roth's Hostel. Well in case you didn't know, Roth's previous effort was the over hyped Cabin Fever. If you've seen that film than I hope you'd agree it wasn't the saviour of horror that certain websites proclaimed. Either way it doesn't give him the kudos to throw his name before a film like a bigshot. Anyway Hostel is the latest chiller from his demented mind and once again sites like Aint It Cool News hyped it beyond belief. It was lauded as visceral cinema that would be unlike anything ever seen. The film opens with three backpackers. Two of them American, the other from Iceland and looking like he could be the dad of his fellow backpackers. The three of them are trekking across Europe...

Hostile Hostel

Advantages: Not much of a plot to follow
Disadvantages: Gory, nudism and drugs

...Hostile Hostel A review by KELLYLOUJ on Hostel (Blu-Ray Disc) November 7th, 2006 Author's product rating: Did you enjoy it? Indifferent to it Story Very weak Characters / Performances Unmemorable Special Effects Good How does it compare to similar films? Satisfactory Advantages: Not too much of a plot to follow Disadvantages: Lots of sex scenes and blood Recommend to potential buyers: yes Full review On Thursday of last week I was desperate to look for something that was worth watching on TV there was nothing so I took a look at the Box office movies on Sky and saw that they were advertising Hostel. As there had been a few conversations in the office regarding this film I decided to purchase the film and give it a go. The film is about 2 American college students Paxton (Jay Hernandez...

Hostel

Advantages: Thrilling, Chilling
Disadvantages: the sex scenes could have been little less

...Well this is one freaky and scary movie. Its rather you have to fight to survive through the movie than to watch it. This movie is completely about brutality. God knows what was goin through that directors mind while creating. The movie is packed with complete thrills, scenes which give you chills, goosebumps and some, which make you wanna puke. The violence and gore in the movie is just too horrific. You need to have a stable mind to watch the movie. The actors in the movie, Jay Hernandez has acted very well. The story starts from a hostel in slovakia. The main character reaches this hostel and find two beautiful ladies there, Natalya and Svetlana. They somehow hangout with these females and end up pairing with them. The females distract the two of these friends by showing them good times. Slowly, these two friends find themselves...

Reasons not to go Hostelling

Advantages: Decent production standards which save it from being horrific
Disadvantages: The cross genre fails to gel, and the gore is not scary enough

...● Synopsis 2 American students and their Icelandic friend are currently enjoying the delights of Amsterdam's Sex, Booze and drugs culture, as they back-pack across Europe, when they learn about a hostel in Slovakia where the women are easy, especially if you have a foreign accent. With the prospect of easy women to good to be missed the three friends head to the hostel where they discover that it is even better than they believed, except strange things start to happen whilst they are there. ● Opinion I had heard and read some great things about Eli Roth's "Hostel" and although was never in a rush to watch it, when the opportunity arose to watch the DVD I sat down with expectations of being entertained as well as horrified. Well sadly I was neither entertained nor horrified, in fact I was more bored than anything as...

Not a Hostile Hostel

Advantages: Some nice editing
Disadvantages: The whole is less than the sum of the parts

...can see that there is potentially a good film inside "Hostel" trying to get out, but it is never really allowed to. The basic idea isn't a bad one, if a little predictable, but it does get dragged down by the opening half hour, which is pretty much all cliché and, to make it worse, a cliché borrowed from another genre. It's a film that you can rest your eyes on for a little while, but never really enthrals or entertains. I certainly did not feel that I got value for my £6 cinema ticket for this film. If you do still want to watch it, I would recommend a rental when it becomes available, or borrowing a copy from someone else, as it's definitely not worth a DVD purchase. Indeed, it's barely worth the price of a DVD rental, as lame as it is. I'll freely admit I may have walked into the cinema with my expectations too high and I might...

Hostel - Unseen Edition (DVD)..oh how i wish i hadnt seen

Advantages: Some good acting, typical gore from Tarantino
Disadvantages: Storyline and characters lack depth

...Directed by Eli Roth and released in 2005, 'Hostel' is one of the most violent and brutal movies you'll ever see. But is this true? I dont think its as violent as it was hyped up to be, and its certainly not a great horror film. Hostel is about a small group of backpackers who travel to Europe in search of women and a great experience after college. They find themselves in a tiny village filled with the women they were looking for. At first all seems well as the boys go to a club, drink and meet girls. However, then the movie takes a darker twist as they are kidnapped and taken to a secret location somewhere in the countryside. Millionaires from around the world travel to this location and pay to torture and kill innocent tourists for "fun" when they arent at the office pushing paperwork. The boys find themselves begging for survival...

Welcome to your worst nightmare - Hostel 1

Advantages: Simple plot
Disadvantages: Simple characters

...~~~Hostel~~~ Welcome to your worst nightmare! ~Why did I watch this film: The film obviously attracted my attention because I am a huge horror fan. I was also intrigued by the fact Quentin Tarrintino was producing the film with Eli Roth (Writer & Director). Some of Quarantino?s films are cult hits so the thought of him producing a horror film with the guy behind Cabin Fever was too tempting to miss. ~The cast: Jay Hernandez as Paxton Derek Richardson as Josh Eythor Gvdjonisson as Oli Lubomir Bukory as Alex Barbara Nedeijakova as Natalya Jana Kaderabkosa as Svetlana Jennifer Lim as Kana Keiko Seiko as Yuk Jan Vlasak as the German businessman Rich Hoffman as the American client Peter Janis as the German Surgeon ~The plot: Two American backpackers Paxton and Josh make friends with Icelandic backpacker Oli as...

Hostel part two - Twice as bad!

Advantages: quite short!
Disadvantages: hmmm!

...In 2005, Eli Roth took us to a new level, in terms of the horror movie. With the original hostel, we were shown a shocking underworld. A place where people pay to torture, and kill other human beings. Scary, in essence, because it was something that could happen, rather than the usual unrealistic tripe that we have become used to. It seemed, that Hostel had tapped into a new market. A market where people want to be shocked. They want to be scared. They want to be taken as far as they can go, and then dragged a little further. Essentially, Hostel was an exploitation film. Sado-erotica at its best. You could watch it, and drink your fill of blood, gore, sex and adrenaline pumping thrills. So, it was natural to me to want to see the sequel. It seemed to come out a bit too quickly for me, but I was still very excited by the prospect. I...
