Grand Hotels of Egypt in the Golden Age of Travel - Andrew Humphreys
From the earliest resthouses serving travelers on the Overland Route between Britain and Bombay to the grand Edwardian palaces on the Nile that made...... more
From the earliest resthouses serving travelers on the Overland Route between Britain and Bombay to the grand Edwardian palaces on the Nile that made Egypt the exotic alternative to wintering on the Riviera, the hotels of Alexandria, Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan were always about far more than just bed and board. As bridgeheads for African exploration, neutral territories for conducting diplomacy, headquarters for armies, providers of home comforts for writers, painters, scholars, and archaeologists in the field, and social hubs for an international elite, more of importance happened in Egypt's hotels than in any other setting. It was through the hotels that visitors from the west--the earliest adventurers, then the travelers and, finally, the tourists--experienced the Orient. This book tells the stories of Egypt's historic hotels (including the Cecil, Shepheard's, Mena House, Gezira Palace, Semiramis, Winter Palace and Cataract) and some of the people who stayed in them, from Amelia Edwards, Lucie Duff Gordon, and Florence Nightingale to Agatha Christie, Conan Doyle, Winston Churchill, and TE Lawrence. ... less

A bit of Luxury in Luxor. St. Joseph Hotel Luxor Egypt.
Advantages: Friendly, inexpensive, good food, swimming pool.
Disadvantages: Lots of street noise on the lower floors. That's all really.
...Why here?
Needing some sun and not having much spare cash, we booked this holiday from Lastminute.com for £598.00 for ten days for two of us. As this included flight from Manchester and acomodation, we weren't expecting much from the hotel. In fact I said to my long suffering other half that we might well end up in a shed for that price. We were very pleasantly suprised!
Where is it...

Fantastic Hotel Shame About Sharm And Booze!
Advantages: Great staff, Great food, Great surroundings
Disadvantages: The drink, not much to see if you don't dive or snorkel
...and then many hotels either side of it. The hotels themselves are more like mini resorts than just hotels, and are either on the sea side of the road with sea frontage or the desert side with none but access to a beach over the road. Many of the hotels have more than one pool and some have fun pools with slides and water falls etc., they also have other things going on like zoo's, casinos, shopping...

Don't forget Alexandria
Advantages: Friendly and very Egyptian
Disadvantages: Not many sites to see, out of the way of most tourists (but that's why I like it!)
....
Nevertheless, any visitor to Egypt should not forget Alexandria, for it is a truly wonderful city and full of character. You will probably see more of the 'real' Egypt during a weekend in Alex than a month touring the more famous sites further south. I spent a year living there while I was a student and totally fell in love with the place, although I didn't really realise this until I had flown home! Typical...
