...I decided to treat my mum and me to a short break to Abu Dhabi last year and choose the Millennium Hotel to stay in. We managed to find a taxi easily enough at Abu Dhabi airport and after a short drive (30mins) we arrived at the hotel. On first impressions I was a little disappointed. I had all these grand images in my head, but in reality the hotel seemed pretty standard. The room itself was quite basic (considering the price we paid), but it was clean and the beds were very comfortable. The hotel does have a nice swimming pool (although a little on the small side) and area for catching some sun. Getting around Abu Dhabi was fairly easy, taxi's are always available and very cheap. Great value half-way between Dubai and Abu Dhabi

Advantages: Peaceful, lovely pool, helpful staff, nice rooms
Disadvantages: Middle of nowhere, food not brilliant.

...I wasn't expecting too much from this hotel, but was pleasantly surprised. My husband was being sent on a few days business trip to Dubai during the school half term, and I decided to tag along at the last minute with our two kids. With only a day to go I didn't expect a great choice of hotels. Sure enough, the only hotels coming up with suitable vacancies were the Kempinski at $850 a night (no thank you!) and this one, at $170 a night. I was a bit confused though as several hotel finder sites put it as Dubai, but the address was Abu Dhabi. Looking on the map we found why, it is nearly exactly haflway between the two emirates. As my husband was working quite nearby and we had a hire car, this was not a problem. ...What to do? You are travelling via Abu Dhabi, it's midnight, you've arrived to discover that your onward flight is delayed, or cancelled. Or perhaps you're flying from Abu Dhabi, you've checked out of your hotel and come to the airport for your overnight flight, and it is delayed. Or - as in my case - the midnight flight was full, I was hoping to get on at the last minute but no luck, and the next flight was not until ten in the morning. For whatever reason, you are facing a night at Abu Dhabi airport, the floor looks very hard and the chairs only marginally less so. It's at a moment like this that you can be relieved to discover the Airport Hotel! Almost barred from the Vodka bar!

Advantages: Nice rooms, some nice restaurants, friendly, good location
Disadvantages: Lobby coffee shop, small pool and gym, expensive internet

Estella Hotel and Apartments Did NOT Disappoint!

Advantages: Excellent location, superb customer service levels and lovely rooms
Disadvantages: No real facilities for the disabled

...Estella Hotel Apartments is based in Limassol in Southern Cyprus where I stayed for 6 nights in late April/early May of 2009 with my cousin. The booking was made via Expedia.co.uk and worked out at approximately £200 for 2 of us sharing a twin apartment (just £100 each basically). Before I confirmed the booking through Expedia I went off and did a bit of research on the hotel to make sure I wasn?t getting something that was cockroach infested. ...If you're going to Abu Dhabi the chances are that you want to chill out, shop, or both. Either way, the Hilton is well located for both. OK the hotel is not actually on the beach - but it is just across the road and there is a handy subway that goes almost from the front door of the hotel to the Hiltonia beach club. The best of both worlds

Advantages: Apartment independence with Hilton hotel comfort
Disadvantages: Cheap soap dispenser, some slow service

...viewed from Dubai as "smaller", "more sleepy", even "boring", it is certainly less glitzy and has less "WOW!" factor but is also less artificial, less tacky and therefore more real, more genuine and has more soul. I was in Abu Dhabi for a couple of weeks with the family and, instead of being stuck in a single hotel room, we decided to get ourselves into a serviced apartment and chose a block of apartments run by the Hilton, The Hilton Corniche Residence The apartments are located quite centrally just off The Corniche, what was the coast road until they reclaimed another patch of land, building out into the bay. Thankfully the new strip of land is being used for parks abd public areas, not building. Olivaer Apart Hotel - A good base to explore from

Advantages: Excellent value for money
Disadvantages: Basic range of facilities

...The Olivaer Apart Hotel is very reasonably priced and there are some excellent off-peak offers available. It is located just off Olivaer Platz, literally across the road from a bus stop that takes you up the Kurfurstendamm (or you can walk up) and about 5 minutes from the U-bahn at Adenaur. If you are happy getting round the city on public transport this is an excellent hotel. There are a few cafes, bars and restaurants close though not a huge selection (there is no dedicated night life area in West Berlin, you will need to try different areas each night). There is also a supermarket two doors away for water and other snacks. The rooms are quite large but had a small bathroom and are simply furnished with beds, desk, table, chairs and a wardrobe. There is also a satellite TV and mini bar and hairdryers etc can be borrowed...

SUNSHINE MAKES EVERYTHING LOOK GOOD: We made our way up to the pool area and were pleasantly surprised by a couple of big pools, lots of sun loungers and umbrellas, a couple of quiet bars and a restaurant. It all looked quiet, sunny and inviting. We sat down and enjoyed an iced tea and toasted sandwiches. We had been up since 2am and I had only had a cup of coffee and water so I was quite hungry by now. The waiter was lovely and the food was fine.
