Great Renaissance Hotel in Brussels
Advantages: Beautiful hotel and great value
Disadvantages: Not too near the city centre
...The Renaissance Hotel in Brussels forms part of the Renaissance chain of Hotels which in turn is owned by Marriott. I stayed at this hotel whilst on holiday in Brussels in August 2003 and found the hotel to be really good value in Summer (as all the business people are on holidays so the best time and cheapest time to visit Brussels is this time of year!)
The room:
The hotel bedroom that we had was well furnished and came with two Queen size beds, although room are available with one larger King Size bed. The room had a TV with satellite TV and a few okay English channels including BBC World. It also came with the usual trapping such as hairdryer, in room safe (very useful for passports and money!) as well as an iron and ironing board and trouser press. If you are here on business there is a large desk with ISDN line...

Bargain hotel in the heart of Brussels
Advantages: Decent hotel, great price on Expedia
Disadvantages: Will you be able to get the same deal?
...INTRODUCTION
Brussels is a handy place to meet if you're in the South Netherlands and your girlfriend is in London. Thanks to Eurostar and Dutch rails, we can both make it there in a couple of hours. My girlfriend managed to get a great deal on a hotel thanks to Expedia, and so here is a review of that hotel, which in my opinion is well worthy of consideration. Seems like the name has slighly changed since this was added to Ciao in 2006, to Eurostars Sablon. I checked the address and I've got the right place!
THE LOCATION
Hotel Eurostars Sablon is located opposite the Museum of Ancient and Modern Art in the city centre, 500 metres from the Royal Palace. This makes it a very handy location for the tourist areas. We found it a five minute walk to the Central train station, and a ten minute walk to the main tourist area...

The Hotel Vendome in Brussels: an OK hotel
Advantages: Convenient location near the city centre, very good breakfast
Disadvantages: Not very nice rooms with no view, the bathrooms are not very nice
...Well I don't know whether I should recommend this hotel or not.... Basically, if like us, you are given the option of staying in this hotel as part of a special deal, then go for it; but if you have to pay full price for the room, then just stay away from it! We ended up in this hotel as part of a wonderful 2 for 1 package in February which included eurostar travel from London to Brussels and one night at the hotel - all for just 120 pounds for the two of us!! So having paid that little, I find this hotel exceeded my expectations.
The hotel receptionist was ok but not incredibly friendly and did not smile very much. The staff in general were helpful but not overly friendly.
To get to our room in the top floor, we had to use a lift that was not very nice, actually it reminded me of hospital lifts and then...

Fond memories in Brussels for keen travellers
Advantages: Friendly staff, unique decor, good location
Disadvantages: A touch expensive for what it is
...I have stayed it the Welcome many times in the past 18 months when in Brussels on business. It is located in the St Catherine district close to the metro and also to many good seafood restaurants. Other good eating places are to be found within 5 minutes walk including Thai and Vietnamese restaurants that line one particular street. The Grande Place is itself within 10 minutes walk.
The hotel is a cosy and friendly place where the 15 rooms are named not in a numerical fashion but after different countries or geographical regions (or in the case of the Silk Road journeys). All rooms are decorated according to their name, many quite delightfully.
I have stayed in probably half of the rooms at the Welcome; my favourites include Tibet which has its own little terrace (it being a superior room) and the Silk Road which is the most...

Brussels on a budget
Advantages: easy to get to, the Grand Place
Disadvantages: Mannakin Pis is dissapointing, takcy tourist shops
...Question
What does one do when you want to celebrate finishing the taught part of a Masters degree and want to go away but are so broke even the cheapest trip to Spain is not an option?
Answer.
Book a very cheap flight for a mini break to Brussels the capital of Belgium. I did this in June 2003 and I had a great time.
I flew with Ryanair from John Lennon airport in Liverpool to Charleroi airport in Brussels. Or so I thought it was in Brussels. It was near enough an hour from the airport to Midi railway station. The connecting bus is a rip off at 10 euros. Since there were four of us on the way there we took a taxi that cost us 35 euros. The airfare was really cheap. It only cost £20 for a return fare including all taxes.
Due to the European Parliament Brussels has cheap hotels at the weekend instead of during mid week. We were...

Brussels sweatbox
Advantages: Close to city centre, train
Disadvantages: Seedy part of town, dirty, unfriendly
...Arriving in Brussels for the second of my European trips, my wife and I headed to Hotel Vendome for what appeared on Expedia as a well kept and reasonable hotel. It took us about 8 minutes walk from the main train station to get to Vendome, and we were greeted by two abrupt and unfriendly staff at the counter. They had to check three times only to realise we had a reservation, then gave us our keys. We asked for a map of the surrounding area and got one as small as a tubemap which did not help us whatsoever. The lobby was small, and fortunately the lifts were in good working condition.
When we got to the room, it was not very tidy and the towels seemed dirty so we asked for them to be changed, which got us some dirty looks. The walls seemed to have stains of some sort which was disconcerting to say the least. This however was to be...

Sheraton Brussels sprouts high!
Advantages: A superb hotel for a bargain price via Priceline
Disadvantages: I can't think of any!
...Mothering Sunday, 2004, was approaching and the 2½-year-old baby Josh nudged his proud father and suggested taking Amanda away for the weekend, which seemed like a great treat. Believe that if you will, but a bit of rather crafty pre-planning on my own part meant that I just happened to have a pair of cheap ?Eurostar? tickets to Brussels already sorted out and I pointed my web browser in the general direction of ?Priceline?, looking for a decent hotel. Not for the first time, I might add! It?s an exciting experience if, like me, you?re fairly cheeky. To cut a long story short, my offer of just £32 was accepted and we were allocated to the excellent ?Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Brussels? ? to give it its full title. I might add, in retrospect, that this was an absolute steal - just check out the rack-rate! Incidentally, Brussels...

ALI BABA AND THE SHOWER OF SH*TS......
Advantages: Clean room, comfy bed, location for exploring
Disadvantages: Unhelpful staff, streets full of beggars and thieves, theft, no safe, expensive Wi-Fi
...World Business Research recently invited me to attend the European Homeland Security Conference 2007, a chance to get together with various people from around the world to discuss terrorism, the threats each country faces and how to policies can be developed and adapted to make Europe a safer place. This year the conference was held in Brussels and as the taxpayer would be picking up my hotel and travel bills when it came to finding accommodation the conference hotel was ruled out due to the 5* rating and I was directed to finding something 3* or below. Using Expedia I trawled through literally hundreds of hotels to find somewhere that was 3*, in a central location with rooms that looked both spacious and clean. Eventually I booked 2 nights bed and breakfast at the Hotel Arlequin at a cost of £95 per night.
The cost wasn?t really...

Luxury hotel, great weekend rates
Advantages: Central location, bargain weekend rates include excellent buffet breakfast
Disadvantages: Rooms slightly on the small size. Expensive to stay during the week
...This luxury hotel does cheap weekend rates, which makes it a great place for a short city-break. It is centrally located, and is just a few minutes walk from the Grande Place, the picturesque main square.
The Royal Windsor offers all the trappings of a high-class hotel:
24 hour room service, fitness club, laundry service, garage, sauna etc. etc. The multi-channel TV has pay-per-view movies and even the UK channels BBC 1 & 2. The en-suite bathrooms are well equipped and the bedrooms are generally very nice if a little on the small size. I found the room got a little stuffy but the windows can be opened and it is not too noisy to sleep with them open.
If you are lucky enough to be assigned one of the rooms on the Godiva floor then not only do you get an even more opulent room you also get free box of Godiva chocolates - alas, having...

A great base for exploring Brussels
Advantages: Great location, comfortable rooms, excellent food
Disadvantages: Expensive if not arranged as part of a package
...I recently spent a weekend at this hotel on a budget break I'd arranged through lastminute.com. I must say I was incredibly impressed by the standard of the hotel for something that I had paid so little for.
The location is perfect. The hotel is situated on Place de Grande Sablon - home of the famous Sablon antique market at the weekends. The architecture of the surrounding area makes this an Art Nouveau lover's paradise. Bars and restaurants are plentiful in the immediate vicinity. The ancient and modern art galleries are less than a five minute walk away and the Grande Place is not much further.
The marbled entrance lobby to the hotel is flanked by opulent antique shops that convey a sense of grandeur as you enter the building. Reception staff were very helpful. Our room was spacious and tastefully decorated. The beds were very...
