Hotel du Nord

Advantages: Beautifully filmed, poetic, magnificently acted masterpiece of cinema rarely matched today
Disadvantages: Nothing... genuinely nothing

...I first saw Hotel du Nord as part of a double bill with a film by Jean Renoir (I forget which - though I think the brilliant Le Crime De Monsieur Lange) and I was frankly going to see the Renoir film and thought, hmmm, I'll just have to sit through Hotel du Nord and grin and bear it. Something about the film just really didn't appeal. Then right from the opening shot that tracks down from the bridge over the canal Saint Martin and along the side of the canal to where the two lovers, played by Annabella and Jean-Pierre Aumont, settle against one another on a bench, despairing and apparently doomed I simply didn't look back. I couldn't. Since that Sunday afternoon I have always had something of a soft spot for Hotel du Nord. It is firmly placed in the traditional of French cinema of the thirties. Like his contemporaries, Renoir...

Memorable Montreal!

Advantages: Historical city, lots to see and do, decent prices, fascinating history
Disadvantages: See history

..., although locals consider this to be more east to west, mirroring the Anglophone/Francophone axes of influence. You will find all the big chains on here such as Gap, Banana Republic and Nike. There are also many shopping streets coming off Rue Ste-Catherine, but as Ms Larsbaby isn't much of a shopper, I didn't get to explore as much as I would normally do. Head to Rue Saint-Laurent, Boul St-Laurent, Rue St-Denis and Ave du Mont Royal for the more trendy shops. Below the street is the underground city, a 29km network of interlinking tunnels full of shops and eateries to provide relief from the harsh winters. There are 2600 shops 200 restaurants and over 40 cinemas here, most of which I've never found. One area of it Monsieur Montreal showed us on this trip has a very fancy hotel and large section of the Berlin wall. I have never been in...

Le Grand Parc, Tigers and Gladiators in France?!

Advantages: Unusual and brilliant spectacle
Disadvantages: Its all in French!

...We have travelled to the Vendee region of France several times and we had heard about The Grand Parc at Puy du Fou but it is billed as a Medieval Theme Park and it really didn't appeal to me! However having "done" many of the attractions in the area and faced with another day of dodgy weather (we were very unlucky in 2008) we decided to give it a go. The tickets were about 25 euroes for adults and 15 for children. However when I enquired about directions at our campsite office they told me that we could buy tickets from them with a 5 euro discount each. This seems to be common practice in the area so either book online or through your accomodation if possible to bag a bargain! They also informed me that it was a simple journey and would be well signposted off the A87. They mentioned that the road to The Grand Parc gets busy...

Hotel Du NOrd, Interlaken

Advantages: excellent service, location
Disadvantages: none

...This is a great 4 star hotel in the centre of interlaken, close to all public transport including the 2 rail stations. Rail and bus travel is cheap in Switzerland. It is close to the centre of interlaken and has amazing views of the Jungfrau. It has a great restaurant and bar in the hotel as well as lovely gardens. This is a family friendly hotel with good disabled facilities. The staff offer excellent customer service and they speak french, english and german so helpful to all visitors. The hotel is central to tourist attractions in the area including the Jungfrau where you have to get a train too as well as the area where there is edelweiss flowers close by. The town has excellent facilities eg swimming. I would recommend this hotel and a visit to Interlaken....

Cheap accommodation in Montreal

Advantages: Cheap, convenient
Disadvantages: No credit cards

...The first stop on our trip to Canada took us to Montreal. We had been planning to stay with friends but when that fell through the week before we went we had to find somewhere else pretty quickly. We wanted somewhere cheap, being students on a tight budget, but also wanted somewhere with private rooms as the thought of sharing a bedroom with strangers just doesn't appeal to me. So after looking in the guide book we ended up booking a room here. LOCATION AND GETTING THERE: The Gite du Parc LaFontaine is lovated at 1250 Rue Sherbrook East in Montreal. We arrived at Montreal airport late in the evening. The Gite did tell us to take the suttle from the airport, get off at the first stop, which is the bus station, and then take their shuttle from there. The shuttle from the airport cost $13 (about £6.50) each. This was fine but everyone...

Neutral Marble Hotel

Advantages: Big rooms, good location, no blood on the ceiling
Disadvantages: Slow lifts, shallow swimming pool

...Okay, this is my first travel review, as such, and that puts me in the dangerous position of being up for comparison with Koshkha, Richada and Torr, all of whom are brilliant at holiday writing, and are, in my opinion, possibly the greatest Writers Of All Time (although I haven't read anything by Dickens yet). So if you want to compare me to them - please don't, because I'm a fragile person. Right, disclaimer out the way. I went to Canada with my family this year, and our first stop: Montreal. In Montreal, you could find yourself staying in a Hotel, and if this is the case, then I can tell you now; the Hotel Omni would be a darn good choice for your stay. As soon as you walk in, you're in a marble tropicalia, with a big statue of a woman sitting down by reception and some of the most ludicrous chandeliers you've ever seen hanging...

Smoked meat for the Montreal masses

Advantages: Superb smoked meat, genuine Montreal experience
Disadvantages: Not for vegetarians!

...INTRODUCTION This review has been a long time coming. Montreal is one of my favourite North American cities, and on this, my fourth visit there, I finally have the pleasure of reviewing the legendary Schwartz's Deli. Lying to the east of the centre of the city, this place is something of a Montreal institution, and is mentioned in every guidebook I have ever read as THE place to go for smoked meat. I always make a point of going there when in Montreal. The first time I ever went there, following my guidebook and entering on my own, I was a bit worried as to what the meat actually was, as I don't eat pork. I really should have taken note that this was a Hebrew deli, which would have allayed any fears. When I was meekly ordering a takeaway turkey sandwich, the old chap serving me clocked me as a British tourist and said "I bet...

Puy Du Fou - summer 2007

Advantages: Amazing shows; attractive setting
Disadvantages: Too much to do in one day

..., but just in case you're going I won't spoil the surprise. Regretfully we didn't get to the other show with the birds of prey as we wanted to look around the parc itself. There were a couple of villages that had been constructed with realistic shops you could wander around. A word of warning is that the medieval village was absolutely heaving with people so all we could do was manage to walk through it - no chance of getting into any shops. This was a disappointment as we'd been to the 19th century village and spent some time there looking around as it was loads quieter. We'd hoped that the medieval would be the same but it was not to be! We certainly didn't manage to look at everything and it explains why the parc offers two and three day passes as it is truly impossible to do all the shows and see the entire parc in a day. You...

Montreal's Olympic Park

Advantages: Lots to see, great tower
Disadvantages: Some parts very shabby, tour not long enough

...The olympic stadium was high on our list of priorities when we went to Montreal as it seems to be my boyfriend's ambition to visit every olympic stadium ever built - much to my dismay! But it turned out to be well worth a look. HISTORY: Montreal was awarded the the olympics by the IOC in 1970. Representatives travelled to Munich in 1972 to see how they managed the games. The construction of the site began in 1973 and the games were held 3 years later in 1976. Not all of the complex was finished for the games. The tower was not completely finished until 1987. After the Olympics the stadium became home to the Montreal baseball team (until they moved to Washington D.C.). It now holds various sporting events and trade shows. The swimming pool complex is now used by the public and the velodrome is now home to a biodome which house 4...

Centre Parcs: SHERWOOD FOREST: An Honest Review

Advantages: Location; Wildlife; Accomodation; Range of activities; Shops
Disadvantages: Quite expensive; accomodation could be a fair distance from main areas!

...I have been to Centre Parcs (SHERWOOD) a few times, and thought I'd share my experiences with this review. The last time I visited Centre Parcs was with my partner in February of this year - the only time I have ever been during the Winter months, but as it is both of our birthday's around January/February time, my partner took me as a birthday treat, and I have to say it was probably the best birthday present ever. We stayed in an 'Executive Lodge', which was a two-storey house, and were there from Friday morning - Monday afternoon. ARRIVAL When you arrive at Centre Parcs in Sherwood Forest, you are told you will not be able to enter your accomodation until around 3pm. I was slightly put out by this, as we had arrived at 10am, and would have to leave our car within one of their carparks (you are not allowed to drive...
