Hotel for the tolerant
Advantages: cheap, good location
Disadvantages: don't ask for an upgrade
...The Best Western Eden Hotel is, unusually for Amsterdam, situated in an idyllic location next to one of the canals that decimate the city. It is within walking distance of many of the squares, flower markets and a short tram ride away from the city centre. There are plenty of places to eat and drink close by and we (me + wife) spent a couple of nights trying out the bars back in 2004. Hence, be prepared for sketchy memory and vague references to things half-remembered.
To save time, my opinion of this place is mixed and juggles a balance of cheap and weird.
The Outside
**********
As mentioned, the hotel sits on a canal - quite a wide bit of canal where a couple of smaller ones join. There is quite an expanse of water in front of it, vaguely industrial in a quaint sort of way. The outside of the hotel looks pretty regal...

Eden Lake
Advantages: Powerful horror, genuinely scary
Disadvantages: Sickening to watch
...It took me at least a week to come to a semi conclusion of how I felt about Eden Lake; it took me a few days at least to get over the initial shock and emotion felt by watching it. And I have to say that the film I am about to review is like nothing I have seen before.
Eden Lake, is an English film directed by a man called James Watkins, I had never heard of the film nor the director and I was not that enthusiastic about watching it, but after a day moping about alone I wanted something scary to watch and it was in the horror section of my local movie shop at a price of £4 so I thought I would give it a watch. Sometimes I just crave something to give me a bit of a scare.
Horror films which are genuinely scary are few and far between and it is almost unheard of to find one which gives you more than a few jumps and actually offers...

It truly is Eden in Madeira!
Advantages: Lots - good food, nice rooms, nice staff
Disadvantages: Beware of people reserving sun loungers with their towels!
...I first stayed at the Eden Mar hotel in Madeira in 2007, and liked it so much I went back again for another week in 2008!
It is one of a group of hotels owned by the Porto Mare group, and is actually joint on to the Porto Mare hotel and The Reisidence, so you are also able to make use of their failities too.
The staff are delightful - friendly, helpful and always eager to please. Whatever request you have, they spring into action and nothing is too much for them.
One of the best points of the Eden Mar is that the accommodation is in suites rather than just rooms, with a small kitchenette with fridge, hob etc behind a folding door. This suited us perfectly as we dont like to eat out every night, and also meant we could keep drinks, milk for tea etc cold in our room.
There are a few different indoor and outdoor pools between...

The Garden of Eden!
Advantages: great read
Disadvantages: none
...Eden Close is the second Anita Shreve novel I have read after being very impressed with Strange Fits of Passion. I was not at all disappointed with this latest read although I was expecting something a bit different as mistakenly, before I read it, I was expecting Eden Close to be a place whereas in fact she is a young woman.
The story is set in a small town in America and is in the present day although you have to bear in mind that this book was written in 1989. It does quite often have flashbacks to events that happened fifteen years before and these are crucial to what happens to the characters later on.
A brief summary of the story is that Andrew returns to his family home after the sudden death of his mother. Whilst dealing with all the practicalities after a sudden death he keeps finding himself drawn back to the past...

Gardens of Eden
Advantages: Educational and individual effect on the masses
Disadvantages: Very expensive, perhaps too touristy so the message is lost.
...The Eden Project opened in Cornwall in early 2001 and has established itself as a very popular tourist attraction, with over 1.2 million admissions per year, well in excess of initial expectations. The Eden Trust, the charitable organisation that runs the Eden Project aims to show how much man depends on plants and the natural world, and therefore how important it is that we treat animals and plants with respect and only use resources in a sustainable way.
The Chief Executive of Eden Project was also responsible for restoring the lost gardens of Heligan in the early 1990s and he wanted to do more to connect plants and people. The site of the Eden project was an old disused clay pit which was an eyesore in a depressed area of the country. It took 3.5 years from the first cut of land to visitors being able to wander through the now...

A Taste of Eden ~ Organic Freshly Cold Pressed
Advantages: Mild, rich carrot-y taste, no artificial additives, cold pressed, rich in pro Vitamin A
Disadvantages: Refrigerate after opening, comes in glass bottle.
...If you like carrots and want to have a rich source of pro-Vitamin A (beta-carotene), I have just the answer to your longing.
. . . . ♥ "Eden Organic Carrot Juice" ♥
The 750 ml bottle is clear glass, so you can see the bright orange carrot juice within. Occasionally you will find a thin layer of sediment and/or a red line along the top of the fluid level (usually when it is stored for a while). Neither of these is harmful, and will mix back in when you shake the bottle. Made from 99% organic carrots and 1% lemon juice, 100ml contains 28 KCals (119 KJ) and 115% RDA of vitamin A. It is pasteurised rather than having added preservatives, so some of the live enzymes may have been destroyed, but it is still rich in anti-oxidants, and it has not been chemically processed.

Garden of Eden..
Advantages: Extensive Facilities, Affordable Prices
Disadvantages: None
...I have been overdoing it with the hours at work lately, and this week they were really taking their toll. Recently I have been surviving on a few hours sleep, and working until very early in the morning, (despite having started the previous morning!). My working life usually means I am driving somewhere in Britain or staying in a hotel and never seeing the light of day. Travelling home this week, the tiredness was catching up with me, and the stress was DEFINITELY getting to me!
Enter Eden Spa. I have always been a lover of a regular spa day visits, and have driven past Eden Spa several times.
About Eden Spa
--------------------
Standing in its own grounds, which are largely lawned, this property stuck out as a little odd to me, slightly out of place, as there is nothing around it. It is an impressive building however, and is...

Not my garden of Eden!
Advantages: Clean and New
Disadvantages: Not a great mix of stores.
...The Eden shopping centre is located in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. I think it opened about 18months ago amongst a blaze of publicity and calling itself the new premier shopping destination and I have visited it several times since.
Getting There
High Wycombe is easily accessed via the M40 from junctions 3a or 4. The centre is well signposted as you enter the town and is easy to find. The centre has attached multi-storey parking for 1600 cars. The car park is actually very old as it was originally attached to the Tesco store that was on the site. The ceilings are very low and the ramps are quite tight, I drive a large 4x4 and it fits in ok but I do find I have the urge to duck as I go up the ramps as the ceiling feels so close! You have to take a ticket on entry and then pay on foot before you leave the car park. I...

Eden Lake
Advantages: Best British Horror in years
Disadvantages: Very grim
...I watched Eden Lake earlier this year, hired from lovefilm, after checking out recommendations on there and also because a friend said it was pretty good.
A couple, Jenny and Steve, visit Eden Lake, which is about to be taken over by an apartment complex. Steve took Jenny there as it is a secluded, romantic spot and he was planning on proposing. They were having fun, enjoying their quiet time together. Until a group of youths turn up that is and their quiet time is disrupted by loud music, noisy kids and a barking dog.
The youths revel in annoying the adults and, provoked (in their eyes), steal the couples? belongings and their car. Steve is subjected to a violent attack whilst trying to defend their possessions and a game of cat and mouse ensues.
Kelly Reilly played Jenny brilliantly, good actress! However, Michael...

The Girls in The Windows
Advantages: Great Location, Breakfast & Friendly Staff
Disadvantages: Itchy Blankets and Thin Walls - Nothing That Bad!
...carpet, was a good size compared to some hotels and the breakfast compared even more favourably. There was a range of cooked meats for The Boyfriend, warm crusty rolls, cheese, hard boiled eggs, honey, butter cake, yoghurts, cereal and bananas. I also ate my first authentically Belgian Bun, dribbled with icing. (I've seen a few complaints on Trip Advisor about the lack of fruit at breakfast in the Eden and there wasn't much selection, but the bananas were fine by me.) The tea, coffee and orange juice were excellent.
LOCATION:
After breakfast, we headed out to see what there was to see. The Eden is a stones throw from the historical cobbled centre of Ghent and it was no problem popping back to the hotel for coats and then for dry clothes after we took a 40 minute ride on an open boat in a rainstorm. There are plenty of restaurants close...
