Lagos: the real capital of Nigeria!!!

Advantages: Bubbling city, pleasant places of interest
Disadvantages: Traffic Jams, over populated, police!!!

...It will be quite a challenge writing about this wonderful city, having lived there for many years. A very fast paced city it is and you certainly have to be tough and resilient to survive here. Lagos was formerly the capital of Nigeria, which happens to be the most populated country in the whole of Africa. It is even said that one in every black person is a Nigerian. During the Military rule in the 80;s though, the capital was moved to Abuja, much further inland. Lagos is by the Atlantic ocean, on the south west of the country. As any big metroplex would, it boasts of its highways, fly-overs, bridges, skyscrapers and the like. It has a population of perhaps 10million; perhaps because no one really knows the population. It tends to be more expensive than other parts of the country but virtually any large corporation that has any...

ABUJA- THE NEW AND IMPROVED LAGOS OF NIGERIA

Advantages: CLEAN, LOW CRIME, GOOD TOURIST ATTRACTION, STATE OF THE ART INFRASTRUCTURE
Disadvantages: RELATIVELY EXPENSIVE AND A DEVELOPING ENETERTAINMENT SCENE

...ABJ as the city is fondly called is the new and improved ?Lagos ?of Nigeria. ?Lagos? in the sense that it is the centre of all the hustle and bustle of Nigeria, in other words thee heart beat of the country. However things are slowly changing as the not so new capital of Nigeria is becoming a force to be reckoned with. Located in the centre of the country?s Middle Belt, Abuja is covered mainly with savannah grassland but there are patches of rainforest. There are two seasons, the hot and dry harmattan (November to March) and the rainy season (April to October). The weather is a bit peculiar as there have been hailstorms and extremities of temperatures within the same day; boiling hot in the day and very cold in the night almost like a desert. The weather can change at the drop of a hat. The city is clean and not as densely...

My Lovely Lagos

Advantages: A Great Atmospheric Town Bubbling with Life and Colour
Disadvantages: None

...I don't know why it has taken me so long to get round to writing about Lagos. I guess when you live in a beautiful place you tend to take your surroundings for granted. It's six years now since I left Portugal but there isn't a day when I don't miss the colour and ambience. On days like today when Warsaw is a sea of grey I really miss the colours blue, white and yellow - sky, white-washed houses and sand. The first stop for visitors arriving in the Algarve will be Faro airport. Faro is a fine town ans has a lot to offer for a day trip but the first thing most visitors will want to do is to get in a cab or a hired car and drive to their hotel or apartment in the sun. There will be time to view Faro and its alleyways and harbour- front another day. My first memories of living in Lagos are when I lived on a boat in the fishermen...

Lagos in the Algarve!

Advantages: sunny!! friendly, relaxed, picturesque
Disadvantages: can be a bit too hot, not much shade, constantly people trying to sell daytrips

...on a hotel or resort/holiday destination, is Holiday Watchdog, which tells the whole truth and nothing but the truth on every detail and quetion posible. PERSONAL TIP: dont go to the chinese restaurant in the centre of lagos! terrible service, cramped room with tables right beside each other and they laughed at us when we spoke!!!!! -----MY EXPERIENCE----- I went to Lagos for a week with my boyfriend last summer. It was a brilliant experience! You pronounce Lagos as Lagosh. The currency is in Euros. About an hours drive in the bus from Faro airport. Pleasant jouney in the Thomson bus provided. Brief tour involved in this journey as the holiday rep gives details on the area and interesting facts, I still remember that talk to this day. Lagos seems to thrive on tourism as everything is aimed at tourists. Hotels and appartments...

mr hillary

Advantages: Good chinese restuarants, people...
Disadvantages: travel, corruption, dangerous, accomodation, smell...

...are so dangerous and conjested that you have to allow hours for travel. Every journey is a nightmare as you narrowly avoid collisions, cars cutting in from every angle. Black smoke bellows from poorly maintained trucks, lorries and cars. Most of the vehicles are terribly un-road worthy for instance having to pull over when it rains as they don't have wind screen wipers. Your lucky to find a lorry with all of its wheels!! People are hanging off the back and sides of taxis, they are battered yellow minibuses rammed full of people. Everyone smells and it can make you feel quite sick. A white person in Nigeria is a target for all, unless your constanty around the upper crust of society any form of gesture will expect to be repayed in naira. Its best to do things urself trust me. A safe hotel will cost you $300. We stay in a compound...

Nigeria - Land of Internet Crime?

Advantages: Different
Disadvantages: Dangerous

...\", specially high indeed, my way around this in every country I enter is to reply, \"Ah yes, my friend, my good friend, it is many years since I have seen you! How is my wife\" this simply confuses them, and they soon go away. Its best to hire a vehicle if you can, and avoid the death trap that comes from the roller coaster ride in some old trabant style car thats older than the drivers Granny ! One of the majorly noticeable things about this country is how many people there are, its totally packed to the brim, and overflowing too. Aparently It is the most densely populated country in Africa. Lagos is in the south of Nigeria, and by the coast, so, what do I do, well, no more planes for me, lets drive North, and then East a bit. A few days down the line I came to the town of Undogo, near to Bali. This pure cespit of a town...

Lagos, Ideal Holiday for the Lazy.

Advantages: tree lined streets bars and cafe
Disadvantages: does get steep in places.

...restaurants specialising in seafood, so fresh you get to pick you meal while its still alive, there is a small Nightclub with Bouncers, but little in the way of trouble. Cobbled streets lined with mainly Lemon and Orange tree's a beautiful sight and a full array of shops. The locals are very friendly and will go out of their way to assist you, and the café owners will always do their best to prepare meals your kids may like, but having said this, I would say Lagos is aimed at the slightly older generation, with grown up kids, as there's not a lot around for the younger ones. If needed there is a Hospital on the edge of town, Police station, Doctors and several Chemists. There is a few large hotels in Lagos, but I would consider staying on the many closer resorts and hiring a car, as there is so much more to see and do on the Algarve...

Nigeria: Not even a Nation?

Advantages: A destination to impress your friends with
Disadvantages: Dangerous and unpleasant.

...will try and extract their share by selling overpriced goods, begging, getting you to buy drinks for girls and similar ploys, in Nigeria there is a good chance somebody will extract it by force. There are guns everywhere in Nigeria. All the police have little ones, and all the military have big ones. There are police and Army personnel everywhere, which should come as a relief, but they are usually just as much on the make as everyone else. Violence is a part of everyday life here. You will see fights and shouted arguments almost daily. Driving in a minibus from one part of Lagos to another I witnessed our armed guard kicking a car and giving its owner a couple of solid whacks with his baton when he wouldn't pull over onto the pavement to let us past. He then got back into our bus and we drove off - over pavements, traffic islands and onto...

Lagos my Love

Advantages: It's a very charming holiday destination
Disadvantages: On the touristy side... (if this bothers you)

.... Lists can be found at the tourist office, but they will most likely already have approached you on the street! For hotels and appartments, check a travelguide. According to what I heard, accomodation must be reserved beforehand when going there July/August. THE BEACHES: You have the choice between Lagos' very own Meia Preia, a 4km long sandbeach and smaller sand beaches, tucked away between Lagos' characteristic rocks, that provide a stunning view and invite for exploring of the hidden-away grottos. The beaches are clean and rather nice. HIGHLIGHTS: I strongly recommend booking a boat trip to the grottos. Take a camera with you and enjoy the breathtaking sights that will be brought to you. Only downside: Not all guides speak good English. If you are reasonably fit and up for it, book a Kajak tour at the Lagos Surf Centre (Price...

Nigeria - A nation ignored

Advantages: Hospitable people, Interesting tourist attractions to see, Potential business opportunities
Disadvantages: Lack of publicity, Incorrect Image, Ignored tourism potential

...riverine area of the country. You will also not forget the metropolis-city Lagos (You can read my opinion about Lagos as well) The country has a rich culture and heritage with various festivals, traditional, religious running throughout the year for tourist delight. Nigeria has experienced over the years political turbulences and is now settling down with a democratically elected goverment. The present administration enjoys the support of the people in ensuring continuity in their new democratic state. This country certainly has potential for investment short or long-term with promises of good return on investment. The Nigerians are warm, sociable, accomodating people and always have open arms to embrace visitors and investors. It is certainly an emerging market that should not be overlooked. In an attempt to correct...
