Hotel de la Treille, Lille

Advantages: great position.Everything in walking distance
Disadvantages: our room was small

...The hotel is in the old part of Lille. everything is in walking distance, even the Eurostar station (only about 5-10 mins on foot) The hotel was clean and the staff were friendly. The breakfasts had no 'hot' dishes, just lovely French sticks, croissants, pan au chocolate , the usual cold meats & cheese, cereals etc. Tea & coffee out of those big flask things! No bar. The bedroom was cleaned daily as was the shower/toilet / bath. The only downside was the size of the room - it was really small. Hardly any room between the side of the double bed and the patio doors. My wife & I are not big people, but it really was cramped. There was a balcony , but not a great view (into the next building), though you could see the imposing cathedral which is just behind the hotel. We were unlucky with the room size, others in the hotel were bigger....

  "Lille De France" - Geddit?

Advantages: Near London by train, cosmopolitan feel, excellent transport connections, eating out, plenty to see
Disadvantages: Dog poo

...and vanilla waffles certainly kept out the Flanders chill ? it was markedly colder than London, and helped me smile in the face of adversity; in this case standing at every silver jewellery stall whilst hers-truly sampled the wares. GETTING AROUND LILLE Despite what I said about its size, the city centre is eminently do-able on foot; we even managed to drag our airline-crew overnight case on two wheels from the Lille-Europe TGV station, seemingly on the edge by the ?Périférique? by-pass to our hotel, placed very centrally next to the Opera House in Rue Des Bons Enfants* ? ten minutes walk at the most. *I suppose if it had been the Rue Des Méchants Enfants, we?d have been kept awake all night. Lille, C'est Fantastique!

Advantages: Varied culture, fab cuisine, nice people
Disadvantages: Some shops closed Sun and Mon

...'t fancy sitting down to dinner! you get a huge choice of sauces to go with your kebab, and it's served in a naan style pitta bread (so it's nice and thick) As for nightlife, I used to work in a bar in Old Lille called Cafe Oz, it's in Place Louise-de-Bettignies and it's an Aussie bar. It's actually filled with french people, and the atmosphere is usually amazing! look out for the staff dancing on the bar and offering vodka and citron to passing customers! (for free!) The music's good too as they usually have a DJ in on the weekends. Check out Rue Royale for late night clubs and bars (most bars are open until 2am or 3am, and the clubsa stay open til 5am most weekends.) There are a lot of hotels in Lille and the quality and price really varies. For a real budget you can stay at Hotel de France on rue de Bethune. It's very basic, but...

Midsummer madness in Lille

Advantages: Atmospheric French town, easy to reach by train or car
Disadvantages: Very noisy on 21st June

...a housing estate, and I was just about to insist that we give up, when we saw a signpost announcing ?Restaurant Panoramique.? It may not have been the right one (in fact, it turned out that it was), but I didn?t fancy our chances of finding another, similarly placed establishment, so we decided to eat there. It was a magnificent,, sunny evening and we enjoyed a very pleasant meal (27 euros for 3 courses) watching a superb sunset. (The restaurant was called The Aquar?Aile.) Lille aux Trésors

The town was born towards 11th century, and knew a disturbed history. At the beginning, as its name indicates it, it's just an island, a fortress surrounded by marshes (medieval name: Lisle, which means "island", so). Lille-Centre of Northern France

Advantages: Beautiful
Disadvantages: None

...Having visited Lille on a number of occasions I have been astounded by the beauty of the city itself. The main square is of interest as the ageing buildings tell a story of the city's past. The museums cover a number of aspects, not only from Lille's history but also other important factors such as the Museum of Religious Art and the Natural History museum. Lille not only provides such wonder but a superb array of shops, cafés and restaurants making it an enjoyable visit. Lille also has many parks such as the 'Le Bois de Boulogne' which is at close proximity to the city centre. The park combines leisure activities as well as a zoological park. The large train station makes this city more accessible where parking may not always be easy. I would recommend Lille to anyone who enjoys historical beauty as well as a good time....

This is where I live, Lille from France

...Lille is situated in the north of France, and this is where I live, not really, but I live around Lille. This is a amazing town, but I wish there was more english each summer ;o). Fist, it's really easy to come to Lille thanks to the ferries (that I took so many times!) and we have plenty of hotels there! I don't know if they are expensive or not because I don't need them! Those years, the town has being changed, I mean it's getting more and more beautiful, with each saturday a concert or something like that on the major square [we call it Grand' place]. This town is so great! we are next to Paris, Beligium, Netherlands, Germany, and you guys: GB! it's not raining all the time as people can think or say! Advantages: extensive database of hotels, many quite inexpensive
Disadvantages: if a hotel cheats you, they will apologize, but do nothing.

I have reserved rooms using this service in the past, and have been very pleased. This, however, came to an end this summer. I booked a room at the Travel Inn in Reykjavik, only to find, upon arrival, that my wife, son, and myself were escorted to a car with no explanation. Eventually the clerk told us that we would be driven to the "other" location. The Travel Inn has, it seems, bought space in the Pavi Guesthouse (over a mile away). I would have refused on principle, but I know the situation in Reykjavik is such that I might have had no options. Hotel International

...I recently went on a cultural girlie trip with a friend to Paris. I was left to do all the booking. I was looking for a reasonable hotel, near a metro stop, which included breakfast. I came across the Hotel International on various travel sites and it seemed fairly highly rated so I booked us in for three nights. LOCATION: The hotel is located 6 Rue Auguste Barbier in the 11th Arrondissement. The nearest Metro stop is Garcourt which was a two minute walk away and it was a five minute walk to Republique which gives good links to other lines. It's not really central enough to avoid the Metro and walk to the attractions but it was located so close to a stop that it seemed ideal. PRICE: Prices vary depending on size of room and season. There are singles, doubles and triples available. We paid Euro254 for the whole time...
