...We were planning to visit Pompeii but finding a decent hotel close by was as easy as excavating these ancient ruins with a teaspoon. So Naples it was. The Holiday Inn looked perfect for our needs - on the edge of the city towards Pompei and easy access from the autostrade. When I say easy access, I mean 'in theory'...on a map...in my wildest dreams etc. The Holiday Inn is situated in a modern development of high-rise offices and commercial properties called Centro Direzionale directly connected to a link road from the A1 autostrade. But, this being Naples, where stock car racing is not only the principal hobby, it's downright de rigeur, it proved a little more tricky than directed from the hotel's web page. Hotel La Pace - peace in an area famous for war

...At the beginning of April 2004 I spent 24 hours in Naples (on my way to Sardinia), I´d like to take you with me and show you what I saw. I stayed in a hotel in the historical centre, Hotel Sansevero in Piazza San Domenico Maggiore 9; 70 Euro for a single room (clean, quiet, nice modern furniture, small breakfast). The description on the net said, ´easily reachable by underground (Metropolitana) Montesanto station or by bus direction Corso Umberto´. Ha!, says I, nonsense, nothing is easily reachable in Naples that isn´t situated directly beside an underground station. There are only two lines in the whole city and they do not cross the historical centre. If you don´t know which bus number to take (the info on the net didn´t include it) and can´t speak the language well so that you can ask, this means of transportation is not advisable...

La Quinta Inn, Naples, FL: Bang for your Buck!

...Accessible and Clean, on a Budget My girlfriend and I booked through hotwire.com and had a lovely experience. We stayed for 4 days and had an extremely pleasant experience. The website had us booked for a smoking room but we wanted a non-smoking and the manager made sure we were accomodated as soon as we requested a change. He had the staff clean the room to ready it for us even though I never would have guessed it was dirty in the first place. One of the CLEANEST hotels I have ever stayed in. The manager and other staff gave us advice on anything we wanted (restaurants, attractions, even beaches) without ever seeming annoyed. The hotel is extremely close to every thing in Naples and is a short drive from the airport in Ft. Myers. ...It's a trade off which often crops up when arranging accommodation for city breaks - a central location costs more but in the end you may spend as much on transport as you think you've already saved. In June my partner and I spent a week in Naples. He was there for a few days for work, I would do my own thing for the first couple of days then we would have a couple more days to ourselves. We needed to be fairly close to the centre for the wok engagements but cost was our primary concern. Sadly Ciao could not help so we trawled through pages and pages of websites, eventually finding Hotel Ideal. True to its name it did sound like a very good option - close to the city's main bus and train stations, near to Naples' main shopping area and only a short walk away from the sea; the price was reasonable and it did have a double room...

...food,yet also,filth,volcano,earthquakes,crime pollution,drugs and Maffia;you have the lot here. weather wise,scenery,interests,sights,beaches,and warm skies are as intense and as intoxicating as you'll ever get-hence the old saying; See Naples,and die! Firstly,the sights and sounds,the smells and colours-a heady mixture of cosmopolitan cultures,and contrasting language and dialects sit side by side. There are lots and lots of "Festa's" and street parties,Demo's etc etc that always pound the eardrums so you might aswell join 'em; you'll be made most welcome!And it's no good complaining..as you hang insane from your hotel balcony.You'll never beat them,like Rio,it'll carry on for most of the night. I have never seen so many people throng the streets. The noise and chaos can wear you out,and our oldest son was born at the end...

Pompeii to Naples..an archaeologist's playground!

Advantages: Better than time travel!
Disadvantages: If there were any...I've forgotten them!

...The disaster of August 24 AD79 when Vesuvuis erupted and destroyed both Pompeii and Herculaneum has fasciniated me since the age of 4. So much so that I even did my degree on the place. I backpacked across Italy in 2002 and Pompeii was the first stop on my list. The first thing to note that if you arrive by train from Naples is to realise that there are 2 stops for Pompeii. The scavi or the excvations and other being the new town of Pompeii. Be sure that you get off at the right one. The new town of Pompeii (not the excavations) is nohing special compared to other Italian towns, there are lots of dogs roaming the streets and think twice about driving, all cars are battered to glory! The main church of the town is spectatucular and the town really comes alive at night. Just sit and watch people..young and old as they...

Hotel International

Advantages: Location, breakfasts

...I recently went on a cultural girlie trip with a friend to Paris. I was left to do all the booking. I was looking for a reasonable hotel, near a metro stop, which included breakfast. I came across the Hotel International on various travel sites and it seemed fairly highly rated so I booked us in for three nights. LOCATION: The hotel is located 6 Rue Auguste Barbier in the 11th Arrondissement. The nearest Metro stop is Garcourt which was a two minute walk away and it was a five minute walk to Republique which gives good links to other lines. It's not really central enough to avoid the Metro and walk to the attractions but it was located so close to a stop that it seemed ideal. PRICE: Prices vary depending on size of room and season. There are singles, doubles and triples available. We paid Euro254 for the whole time...

...I'm glad that I did not get to read any of the reviews before I went to this hotel, or see the Holidays from Hell programme the night before! The hotel can be found along the seafront, about three miles from the main centre of Blackpool, heading out towards Fleetwood. It is now under the Britannia hotels group and it is easily accessible by tram and bus. We used the trams the whole time instead of me driving all the time. My husband, my two youngest children and myself went last week for a couple of nights, after finding an advert which gave a special price of £35 per person dinner bed and breakfast per night. The two children were included free of charge, including their meals. The advert did state that the hotel was ungoing a £7million pound upgrade, and that some services may not be available.
