Dover Gateway to England

Advantages: Busy port. Shopping is reasonably good. White cliffs and Castle are attractive
Disadvantages: Lacks character

...Bounded on one side by the Channel coastline and the famous White Cliffs,Dover in Kent is very much a maritime town. Throughout the ages this surprisingly small town has been the gateway into England from Continental Europe. For many Britons heading for holidays in Europe,Dover is the place to hurry through in order to board the ferry or hovercraft at the two passenger docks. Few have the time or even the inclination to explore the town. The well known landmarks of the White Cliffs and imposing Dover Castle located on a dramatic hill top setting blend well with the town's bustling port. You can enjoy a birds-eye-view of the busiest passenger port in the world from the Langdon Cliffs picnic site. The town itself frankly is not particularly distinguished. It is rather lacking in architectural character compared to the likes...

GATEWAY TO ENGLAND WORTH A STOP (UPDATED)

Advantages: wonderful countryside almost in town; castle; compact centre
Disadvantages: disappointing architecture; shopping not great; not so easy to get to by public transport

...; showing remains of what was the oldest found seagoing boat in the world (3 500 years old) with a lot of background information in a high-tech gallery on the top floor of the Museum. The exhibition with models of the Dover port showing its development from modern times till now is also very interesting if you are into this kind of thing. Currently (untill spring 2005) there is an exhibition entitled 'Romans and Britons' in the museum, full of wax-figure displays showing how the ancient inhabitants might have looked and lived; and with informative written panels on the history of Romans in Southern England. The Museum is attached to what is called Dover Discovery Centre and what houses amongst others a new library, UKonline centre with free Internet access (do not bother with the Internet cafe unless UKonline is closed and the library...

Dover Museum

Advantages: free entrance for locals, nice Bronze Age Boat on display
Disadvantages: None

...Location Dover Museum is centrally located in the market square area of Dover town and is within walking distance to the train and bus stations. Prices Admission is free to local residents, although you do need to prove that you live in Dover by showing a document such as a bank statement or utility bill. Adults who do not reside in Dover will be charged two pound fifty and children are OAPs are charged one pound fifty. The Museum Dover Museum was first opened in 1836. The museum is spread across three floors. Just inside the entrance, is the history exhibit which traces the history of Dover from the Stone Age to the time of the Saxons. Here you can view the Bronze Age boat which is believed to be the worlds oldest known sea going boat. Here you can also view the array of Saxon jewellery, which is kindly borrowed from...

Dover Leisure Centre

Advantages: You don't need to be a member to use the facilities
Disadvantages: Certain parts may be shut due to private events

...Living in Dover means that we don't have too many facilities. Dover Leisure Centre is about the only sporting facility in Dover other than the football and rugby pitches. Location Dover Leisure Centre is located on Townwall Street in Dover which is pretty much on the seafront and within walking distance to the Port of Dover. It is also within walking distance of Dover town, Dover Priory Station and Pencester bus station. Facilities There are two swimming pools at Dover Leisure Centre. There is a main swimming pool which is 25 metres and also a learner / childrens pool. In the main pool, there are two lanes of the swimming pool which are sectioned off to create one slow, and one fast swimming lane. The rest of the pool is then literally just open water where people can swim at their own leisure. The smaller pool is much...

The gateway to Europe needs new fenceposts

Advantages: If you sucked all the people and shops out of it, it'd look nice
Disadvantages: Crime, drunks, no jobs, no investment, no shopping, no hope

...at the same college. So a snivelling diva, a petty aristocrat and a lying politician all lived here. Yay! Oh, and Bleriot flew the channel from here. But he's not so much of a celebrity. I don't own any of his albums. LAYOUT Well obviously you have the port. This is conveniently located next to the sea. As you enter Dover (from the A2 at least) you will come over the top of the cliffs, round a big raised roadway that will gently take you to a roundabout which leads to the entrance to the docks. The raised roadway is called Jubilee way. Oh, and it has a flashing sign to say if you're driving too fast. Then we have the beach, also handily by the sea, and on the seafront are two hotels - the Churchill, which is posh, and Premier Travelodge, which...isn't. The latter is usually frequented by truckers and prostitutes. I worked there...

Castle in the Air

Advantages: Historic, breathtaking, a full day out
Disadvantages: Steep walks, quite tiring

...Dover Castle is one of the countries - if not Europe’s - mightiest fortresses. It stands proudly upon the magnificent White Cliffs overlooking the sea and guarding the shortest crossing point between England and the rest of the European continent. The castle is a truly imposing site and has a very long and colourful history making for a very enjoyable and full day out. There is plenty to experience here as you explore the castle complex all of which will be detailed later. The location of the current castle was built upon the remains of a pre-existing Iron Age Fort built upon this high point on the cliff tops and over the years has seen constructions built by the Romans – the Roman Lighthouse – and the Saxons – The church. Medieval tunnels also exist beneath the castle hewed into the chalk cliffs around 1216...

The Mackworth Hotel, Derbyshire

Advantages: Great location, warm and friendly
Disadvantages: May be out of budget, hotel rooms not suitable for disabled guests

...The Mackworth hotel is a converted and extended farmhouse situated on the edge of the medieval village of Mackworth, Derbyshire. It lies just 2 miles out of Derby City Centre with close links to the M1/M6/A38/A50. We chose this as our wedding venue in the October of 2006, after visiting the Hotel for several meals and evenings out previously. As well as being fully licensed for civil wedding ceremonies, the hotel boasts extensive conferencing facilities, restaurant and bar areas. The restaurant boasts a superb carvery with a varied choice of meat and veg for a reasonable price as well as many alternatives on the menu. The hotel is surrounded by picturesque Derbyshire Countryside visible from the restaurant open plan extension. The hotel itself has welcoming decor styled on rustic farmhouse with the main entrance to the side...

Dover Priory Train Station

Advantages: recently refurbished, nice cafe
Disadvantages: in a grotty area of Dover town

...History Dover Priory Train Station was first opened on 22 July 1861. It was originally called Dover Town but was renamed Dover Priory in 1863. The name Dover Priory was taken from the remains of St Martins Priory which was situated close to the station. Dover Priory Train Station suffered greatly during the war and was actually the first place in Dover that was bombed. Dover Priory Dover Priory is the only train station in Dover and is located about a 5 minute walk from the town centre of Dover. There is a free shuttle bus which runs from the train station to Dover Docks. In August 2006 Dover Priory train station was renovated. These renovations included the refurbishment of the station building itself, the booking hall and the toilet facilities. CCTV cameras were installed which now cover the platforms, waiting areas and ticket...

21st Amsterdam Hotel

Advantages: Mediocre location, cheap
Disadvantages: Could be cleaner, no towel!

...I went on holiday recently with a bunch of lads to celebrate our 21st Birthday....what we did in Amsterdam though for that is a different story xD However on browsing the internet we originally settled on a hotel which was said to be literally 1 minute walk away from the city centre. However due to some stairs being described as the 'Stairs of Death' We decided to upgrade to a 2* Hotel instead! On arrival in Amsterdam, we found a booth at the train station where you typed in the address of your hotel, and it located it for you and printed it along with tram lines and numbers to get, So we printed and thought with our luggage, oh that doesn't look far, we'll walk there. And truth be told, it was only what 20 minutes walk away from the centre. Maybe a bit more depending on your walking pace. But with the Luggage it took...

Celebrating England

Advantages: looks cute
Disadvantages: retired

...Everybody my age had TY beanies, they were adorable! My close circle of friends and I were huge collectors and between us we have most, if not all, of them going! One of these is England the Bear. England: The name is pretty self explanatory. This bear represents the country England. Whether it is bought as a souvineer by a tourist in England, or by somebody whose home country is England and they are proud of that, this bear is there to represent it. Appearance: To look at, England from a distance seems plain, almost like a basic white bear. Indeed, his fur is white, which goes hand in hand with the whiteness of the England flag. Around his neck there is a little red, white and blue bow - the colours of the Union Jack. This alone is cute, and then on his chest you will notice a little England flag has been stitched on. This adds to...
