A great hotel to stay at when visiting Edinburgh

Advantages: Plenty to do and see, within walking distance
Disadvantages: None

...I have stayed at this hotel on a number of occasions as we love to visit Scotland! Whenever I visit Edinburgh I stay at this hotel, and book a room via the Holiday Inn Express website, as there are often cheaper rates available. Also I am a member of their Priority Club Rewards scheme which gives you points for every stay, which you can save up and redeem for free nights at any of their hotels. I have had a few free nights over the years, and am about to redeem another. Being a member of this scheme also entitles you to priority check in , extended check out times, comlimentary newspapers as well as bonus points offers, which are sent to you via email. It is completely free to join and a great scheme. All details can be found online at HiExpress.co.uk. I last visited in February where I paid £35 for a double room for myself...

A lovely Scottish hotel

Advantages: Central location, attractive building, good customer service
Disadvantages: Shower had seen better days - otherwise none

...I had the unprecedented luxury of staying overnight in a hotel without my husband and (more importantly) the kids, when I travelled up to Edinburgh to attend a friend's wedding reception. I ended up booking a single room at the Cairn Hotel through lastminute.com. I paid £44 for a single room for one night. I have to admit that I didn't check whether it would have been any cheaper to make the booking directly with the hotel, rather than through an intermediary website. Once I'd booked, I started to feel a little apprehensive about staying overnight on my own in a strange hotel. Lastminute told me that the Cairn Hotel was a 2 Star hotel and "a non smoking hotel situated in the lively theatre district of Edinburgh with the old town just minutes away. " I felt even more worried when I was trying to describe where the hotel was to my...

The Grassmarket Hotel

Advantages: Cheap and central
Disadvantages: It can be noisy

...Sofe and I decided to spend a few days in Edinburgh when she came over from Sweden to visit. We mainly based our choice of destination on the fact that we both love Scottish men, oh and that we hadn?t been before. Sadly our budget didn?t allow for the 5-star hotel that we are used too (obviously) but we thought that we?d go native and stay in a hotel closer to where all the action was. As good an excuse as any but I must admit that our hotel search was mainly based on price, although we did reject a few very cheap hostels as, although we wanted a budget hotel we were not prepared to share a bathroom with others. Well, a girl has got to have some standards. In the end we stumbled across the Grassmarket Hotel which was situated on, believe it or not, the Grassmarket. This we soon found is a historical and central part of Edinburgh...

Marriott Dalmahoy Hotel, Edinburgh

Advantages: Great for golf, excellent facilities for a active or lazy weekend
Disadvantages: For visiting Edinburgh choose a central hotel

...a nice day? course. Having said that the staff were genuinely friendly and our problem with noisy neighbours was sorted out by moving us to another room. We did, of course, want to sightsee in Edinburgh but unfortunately because the hotel is quite a way out from the centre, we took taxis and the local buses. It would have been great if there had been some transport organised by the hotel! Despite being part of an American chain there was a lot ?Scottish? about the hotel including the food and the bar?s top shelf. The main restaurant for breakfast and dinner was pricey to say the least but the bistro type restaurant more than fulfilled our needs....

Royal Terrace Hotel

Advantages: Great location, lovely entrance areas
Disadvantages: very shabby in bedrooms

...Edinburgh is one of those cities near enough for us to visit for a weekend, and with enough attractions and shops to keep us all busy. So, we tend to go a couple of times a year. I usually book online, and because I don?t know the city well, it?s usually a bit of a feat finding the hotel. Last time we went, our hotel was very difficult to find, and because it was at the opposite side of the city to ?our side? (Newcastle side), we had to negotiate the city centre- not good for anyone who doesn?t know the city. This hotel, by contrast, was incredibly easy to find. Armed with my route finder directions, we set off, and it seemed that no sooner had we entered the city than we were there. The hotel itself is located on a beautiful tree lined street of Georgian terraces- very stately. Our one problem when we first arrived is that...

Hen weekend - Apex international, Edinburgh

Advantages: Proximity to city, excellent rooms and brilliant staff
Disadvantages: none

...We visited Edinburgh on my hen night and I had previously stayed at the Apex City on buisness which is about 3 doors away from the Apex International. All of our guests were arriving at different times as travelling from far and wide. As the bride I arrived first at 8.30am as my flight was an early one. We checked in but our rooms were not ready, the hotel offered to take our bags and then suggested an excellent breakfast eatery located on the Royal Mile. As we had just landed in Edinburgh we did not have much of a clue how to navigate the city - the staff in reception were excellent and even gave us a free map whislt advising of the best sights to see!! Once we had had breakfast and done some sightseeing, we returned to the hotel to find that our rooms were ready (12.30) We were a party of 8 staying in 2 rooms!! The hotel then...

SPLIT DECISION FROM EDINBURGH JURY!

Advantages: Reasonable prices, easy booking, very central
Disadvantages: Expensive dial-up internet access, has the potential to be very noisy because of proximity to Waverley train station

...For anyone that doesn?t know, Jurys Doyle is a hotel and inn chain with its roots in Ireland and 36 hotels in cities across Ireland, the UK and a handful in the US, with another 3 UK outlets planned for the UK in 2005. Their offerings range from 3 star inns to 5 star luxury. Jurys Inn Edinburgh is just that, an Inn rather than a hotel, and at the lower end of the Jurys Doyle chain, room-wise comparable with the Premier half of the Premier Travel Inn chain. Situated in Jeffery Street, central Edinburgh, a stones throw away from Princes Street and George Street, it is well placed to explore the offerings of this magnificent city. Unfortunately, my reason for travelling was business rather than pleasure, so once again, I didn?t get chance to look around, one day?.. LOCATION AND GETTING THERE As already said, ideally situated...

Wonderful Apex International, Edinburgh

Advantages: everything
Disadvantages: nothing

...My husband and I decided to book this hotel to stay in while we were getting married in Edinburgh. We decided to book this hotel after looking at its website and I must say that many hotels are a letdown when you see them in reality but this one was just as good or even better than we expected. We booked four nights at the hotel in a Superior King room at a total cost of 517 pounds for 3 nights including breakfast. The Superior room included 1 King bed, an exceptional castle view with balcony together with room amenities of fridge, safe, walk in power shower with separate bath, bathrobes and slippers, savoury and sweet snacks, specially enhanced Yu Spa handmade toiletries,a large desk, ground coffee and selected teas, choice of pillows, iron and ironing board, and limited edition artwork, wireless internet access and a complimentary...

The Murrayfield Hotel

Advantages: close to Murrayfield stadium
Disadvantages: unprofessional staff lack of cleanliness

...This year my family and I had booked tickets to the Scotland V Ireland rugby game at Murrayfield unfortunately due to the foot and mouth outbreak this trip was postponed until September. We had booked our tickets and a 2 night stay with dinner bed and breakfast at the Murrayfield Hotel, for a family of four this cost around £70 pp per night there where no child reductions due to it being a rugby weekend and this included a matchday programme for all members of the party. The Murrayfield had always been a firm favorite with us and we always stay there when in Edinburgh for business or pleasure. So as usual we expected a high standard of service, how disappointed we where. When we arrived we where given the keys to our rooms. Our bedroom was comfortable but the bathroom floor was not the cleanest which I put down to the maid having...

Tailors Hall - Edinburgh

Advantages: Friendly staff, large rooms, reasonable rates for Edinburgh
Disadvantages: None

...I stayed here in February this year - due to be one night. Such a beautiful hotel near to the popular Princes Street (about a 1 min walk). What can I say. We arrived on the Friday afternoon. The room was absolutely lovely. Very modern despite the student halls like corridors. Nice large double bed, sofa, wardrobe, flat screen tv, pay per view movies, water & tea and coffee and a good size bathroom. We were at the back of the building and were a bit worried that with the fact there is a club in the hotel it would be noisy but this wasn\'t the case. Now read on cause this is where they get my excellent rating! At about 3 in the morning (after going out to dinner in a nearby restaurant and falling asleep) my b/f woke up and was very ill - was ill all night (and all the next day/night). We were due to fly back to london at 12 noon...
