...she went to the travel agents and finally chose the Sol Lanzarote in Matagorda. As the last three holidays I have been on have covered the other main Canary Islands (Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura) and we had made a daytrip over to Lanzarote and liked it last year (the trip left from Fuerteventura, not from Scotland!), this was ideal for me! My mum told me that the Sol Lanzarote hotel was right next to the beach, and my dad and brother, who went to Lanzarote the month before us (and had worse weather, funnily enough) also stayed in Matagorda and confirmed we were indeed right next to the beach. This was great news as far as I'm concerned, as I generally prefer lying by the sea to lying by the pool (which turned out to be a good thing, as I'll explain later). Lanzarote

Advantages: A fantastic holiday for people of all ages
Disadvantages: None at all - i love the place!!

...If your looking for sun, sea, sand and sangrias for your hols this year but your on a 'credit crunch' style budget then Lanzarote may be the one for you! I have visited Lanzarote twice, once as a child and once in October last year and have fallen in love with the place. We stayed in Playa De Los Pocilos which is a small quiet town just outside the main capital of Puerto Del Carmen which is the place to visit if you are after a more lively holiday. Towns such as Costa Tequise, Playa Blanca and Playa De Los Pocillos are for the more quieter folk. Lanzarote is the fourth largest canary island situated approximately 125km off the coast of Africa so you're guaranteed the sun at least! The great thing about this island is that the whole island is only 60km north to south and 25km east to west so you can pretty much cover the whole island...

Los Fariones Hotel, Lanzarote - FANTASTIC

Advantages: Beachfront location
Disadvantages: None that I could see

...This Is a lovely and the location is simply ideal, it is on a couple of small beaches that I think are very picturesque due to the volcanic rock. One of the thing that I loved about this hotel is that all the rooms have good sea views and balconys. This hotel has been a firm favourite with travellers for quite a few years now and has lost none of its appeal. It has lovely trees and gardens which are extremely well tended. The hotel has two pools, not very big but a lovely one for adults only, sunbeds cannot be reserved, and there were always plenty available. Our room was very spacious (TIP - you can pay a little extra and get a seating area). Another plus was the wardrobe space which was superb. ...in the hot sun and kept us at a comfortable temperature. Our transfer to the hotel was smooth and only took 40 minutes from the airport of Arrecife to the resort of Playa Blanca where we were staying. We arrived at our hotel, the H10 Lanzarote Princess and were very pleasantly surprised as it was a very attractive hotel both inside and out. The lobby was immaculately clean with beautiful plants and attractive chairs and tables. The reception team were very helpful and spoke fantastic English. What a beauty of a hotel

...I went to this hotel last december with partner and little boy aged one at the time. What can I say, what a beauty of a hotel. Everything about it was perfect. Its a 4 star hotel and rightly so. Arriving at the hotel we could tell we were a little out of the way but the exterior looked beautiful. As we entered the reception area I knew we were going to have an amazing time. The interior was breathtaking. Very high standard. Quality furnishings. Check in, very professional. Labels were given for your cases and were brought to your room shortly after you got to your rooms. Reception staff checked us in quickly, but I never felt rushed they were friendly, polite and professional at all times. In fact all staff were, never had any issues with anyone. Beautiful hotel Shame about the emtertainment

Advantages: Clean and Good food

The swimming pols were lovely and spotlessly clean beware they are FREEZING COLD!! but we have always found that in pools within Lanzarote.All the entertainment through the day seemed to be at the top pool and the only downside i can say is that they dont come around and get you involved if you wanted to. The kids clubs i cant say much about as when my children went they were all very small children so they didnt want to join in. The only downside i can say about this wonderful hotel is that the entertainment on an evening was very poor.We would normally have our meal at 8pm and after that there was nothing much to do apart from drink our two children on the 2nd week became slightly bored and we had to venture that bit further.. I love Lanzarote! ...Fact!

Advantages: Great weather, great scenery, all round great holiday!

...My parents have owned a time share in Lanzarote for as long as I can remember. Up until I was around 16 I visited at least once a year. I class it as my second home! I haven't been for a few years now but I'm going for a week in April and I can't wait. Some people might have put off a holiday to Lanzarote by thinking it is dare I say it..a 'chavy' holiday destination. This is mainly due to the likes of Stacey Slater (Eastenders) holidaying there! I can happily confirm this is not the case. It's an extremley beautiful island that is generally visited by a mixed bag of respectable and cultered people. I would not recommend Lanzarote for people wanting a lively, clubbing holiday (Tenerife would be the better island for that). Sol Lanzarote-Matagodora

Advantages: Great for families and all round weather

...The Sol lanzarote is situated about ten minutes from the airport, this may sound bad news but it isn't, the airport closes around midnight so there is no aircraft noise overnight, the planes come into the airport from over the sea so you don't get to much noise in the day either. The hotel is situated right across the road from the beach it's not a proper road as such but you can sometimes get traffic coming up it it's more like a path Lanzarote is an active volcanic island but nothing to worry about they tell me there is a least 80 years before any eruptions. To see proof of the activeness of parts of the island it is well worth a trip into the national park where this can be seen. See your reps and they will sort out a trip, take the grand tour if you can you will get to see the whole island on this tour from one end to the other...

Advantages: Plenty to see, especially if you like vulcanology and Manrique!
Disadvantages: Pity it rhymes with 'grotty' cos it isn't

Anyway, lecture over, and as you can imagine, I DIDN'T stay in Puerto del Carmen; in fact I didn't stay by the coast at all. Having said that, nowhere in Lanzarote is far from the sea. At 817 square kilometres, it's just over twice the size of the Isle Of Wight, my favourite yardstick for island measuring - perhaps I should invent a new unit called the IOW or Vectis, so that would bring Lanzarote out at '2.3 Vectii'. Just don't get me started on Australia. WHERE IS IT? Lanzarote is one of the inhabited chain of Canary Islands, which, whilst technically part of Spain, sits off the Moroccan coast in the Atlantic, some way south of Madeira. Lanzarote is the closest to North Africa at around 90 miles from land and 200 miles from the Moroccan port of Agadir...

Lanzarote - like holidaying on another planet

Advantages: Stunning landscape, relaxing and plenty to see

Apparently some parts of "Planet of the Apes" were shot on the island, because the landscape appears almost exactly as it did at the time of eruption, due to lack of erosion. The vineyards fascinated me as they look like masses of tiny craters, adding to the already amazing scenery. One of the most influential people on the island was the artist César Manrique (1919-1992) who ensured that with the growing tourism, Lanzarote would not be transformed into an island full of sky-scraping hotels, and therefore helped to promote and safeguard the island's cultural heritage.
