Not Lincoln's lovliest!

Advantages: see review
Disadvantages: see review

...leading from Lincoln to Grimsby. It is not the most peaceful of places to be staying but I have noticed that most travel lodges seem to be built on the edge of a busy road whether this is to catch passing trade or just to make it more accessible I am not too sure. We already knew about the location anyway before booking so we were aware that the a46 was well within view but it didn't really matter. We weren't going for a nice walk around the hotel grounds anyway. The cost of a taxi into Lincoln from here was £10. The travel lodge is set next to a petrol station and a little chef which is always useful! Then just 500 yards away are two pubs both of which are family pubs which have a good variety of meals. I think the location was just fine for us really it was handy to have the pubs within reach! It just wouldn't be great if we didn...

White Hart Hotel in Lincoln

Advantages: Close to Historical Landmarks, Friendly Staff, Good Rooms, Stylish
Disadvantages: Expensive Breakfast, Some parts need Refurbishment

...of natural light. It looked to me like it was more of a breakfast or lunch room than for dinner though. I thought the White Hart hotel in Lincoln is a very good hotel with good prices and a friendly staff to go with it. If you are planning on having dinner, then you would probably be best having a wander through the streets. The location is beautiful with the hotel supplying parking and within walking distance to some fascinating historical landmarks. 4*/5 Additional Information: - It is a non-smoking hotel, so smokers will have to leave the building if they wish to smoke. - Numerous services can be arranged via reception; taxis, care hire, baby cots, additional towels or duvets. - There is a cash point in the Bailgate area, about 300 yards on the left from the hotel. - Check out time is 11am, check in time is from 2pm. - Children...

Review of The White Hart, Lincoln

The fortunes of President Lincoln

Advantages: Exhaustive history of mid-nineteenth century American politics
Disadvantages: Mainly for the specialist and dedicated enthusiast

...had to give myself something of a crash course in 19th-century US history first in order to understand the picture better. I can't help feeling whether a rather more concise volume that concentrated less on the details of the rivals, and focused more on Lincoln himself, might have had greater appeal. Still, six literary prizes, endorsements from Jeremy Paxman and Robert Harris, and sales to date of over one million, surely answer that one sufficiently. For the dedicated? Perhaps, but not exclusively. (This is a modified version of the review I originally posted on Bookbag)...

Hotels from another Planet?

Advantages: Facilities are amazing
Disadvantages: The rooms could do with an upgrade

...fresh, rather than helping yourselves off a buffet, something I had not previously seen in another dining room before. I honestly thought there was a good selection at both meal times, with enough there to suit everyone. All those I had the pleasure of meeting that holiday thought the same as I did. Failing all that, if you did not feel hungry or did not want to dine at the set times, you could grab a snack, weather it be fries, pizzas or burgers, anytime of the day, from the many snack bars on the complex. Beakfast times were 8am- 10.30am Lunch times were 12.30pm - 3pm Evening meal times were 6pm - 9.30pm Staff The hotel staff their selves were very friendly and would do there up most to cater for your every need professionally and as quickly as possible. On one occasion me and Sarah had lost a bag in a Taxi, which had our...

The hotel from hell

Advantages: Central Location
Disadvantages: Awful room, dirty breakfast area including cutlery, poor staff, noisey

...I had the misfortune to stay at the Britannia Hotel during september of last year. Having stayed in a fair few hotels in my time I was gobsmacked by the appaling way it was run and feel I would like to review the hotel to warn any potential customers of the pitfalls. My experience I ended up at the Britannia as the company I work for was running groups regionally and the agency we work with selected the Britannia for its reasonable rates and central location. Because I was to spend my evening watching the focus groups I thought why not book a room in this place too. I dearly wish I'd had more sense and gone to the lovely Malmaison done the road. But you can always say that with hindsite. From the road the Britannia looks pretty good. Its a large stone clad old building, the sort of building you'd look at Architectually...

Lincoln's magnificent Cathedral

Advantages: Lots of history
Disadvantages: Admission charges

...No visitor to Lincoln can fail to see its Cathedral, which along with Lincoln Castle dominates the town and both of these impressive landmarks can be seen from many miles around. Construction of the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lincoln, to give it its full title, began in 1092 although it was not until 1311 that it was completed. At that time it was not only the tallest building in Britain but the tallest building in the world and remained so for the next 200 years. It originally stood 525 feet (160 metres) tall but during the 16th century disaster struck and the main tower collapsed, which was never rebuilt. Today Lincoln's Cathedral stands just a measly 271 feet (83 metres) high. In fact Lincoln Cathedral has seen its fair share of disasters and has also survived an earthquake and a serious fire. Lincoln...

Review of Lincoln Cathedral

Lincoln Cathedral is in Font of you.

Advantages: Beautiful Historic building
Disadvantages: At the top of a steep hill

...mind since that project in junior school; they are the Norman arched windows, which are rounded at the top, compared to the Gothic arches which are pointed at the top of the arches and finally the flying buttresses. All these wonderful pieces of architecture can be found in Lincoln Cathedral. Sorry I digressed back to the history of the Cathedral. It went through some restoration after a fire in 1141 which destroyed some of the roof, causing the timber ceilings to be replaced with stone vaults. After an earthquake in 1185 the Cathedral took on a major refurbishment and virtually doubled in size compared to the original building (ok, it may not be exactly double, I've not measured it, and I am only going from the pictures). St Hugh was the Bishop of Lincoln at the time bringing his influence on the design; it is here we get...

Review of Lincoln Cathedral

Lincoln Castle

Advantages: A lot of history, very informative tour, Value for money.
Disadvantages: A touch Inaccessible. Outdoors.

...Lincoln Castle is situated in the Cathedral Quarter of Lincoln atop Steep Hill which leads into central Lincoln and beyond. Originally a Roman settlement it was acquired by William the Conqueror (who commissioned the building of the nearby Cathedral) due to its strategic importance in Lindum (now known as Lincoln) an important market town. It is not particularly easy to get to, in that if you are visiting Lincoln town centre, you have limited options to get there. You have a 20 minute walk up a VERY Steep Hill (do not underestimate it's name "Steep Hill") and down again, or a drive to find a space in limited local car parks or waiting for the free shuttle bus, where disabled visitors tend to take priority. It isn't as spectacular as some of the other castles open to the public in England and Wales, but it was felled by Oliver...

Review of Lincoln Castle

Well hello Mr Lincoln!

Advantages: Free, interesting, historical
Disadvantages: Not that much to see

...planned from 1867 (two years after Lincoln's death) but the was not started until 1914 and wasn't finished until 1922 (they take their time these Americans!). Since then its become a bit of an American landmark and features on the one cent coin and five dollar bill. It was also the site for various political rallies, including being the location for Martin Luther King's 'I Have a Dream' Speech. GETTING THERE: Obviously there is first the task of getting to Washington itself. The main airport is Dulles International and flights can be caught with lots of airlines there from the UK. Once in Washington the Memorial is pretty hard to miss as Washington itself is fairly small. Parking close to the Memorial is practically impossible (especially for us as our visit coincided with that of the Pope!). If you don't mind a little walk then...

Review of Lincoln Memorial, Washington

Lincoln's Constitution?

Advantages: Affordable day out, Steeped in History
Disadvantages: None

...within about 10-15 minutes, with the finale being the Magna Carta kept under glass in conditions to preserve it. The Magna Carta, signed at Runnymede, is said to be a constitutional set of documents which has influenced the world over, and this exhibition was extremely interesting even in its own right. There were in fact over 40 copies of the Magna Carta and this copy has been documented to be in Lincoln since that time of King John. The Gaol ----------- My second and more unplanned Gaol tour of the month is that of Lincoln Prison, which dates back to 1787 although Lincoln was the home of prisoners taken from the Battle of Culloden some forty years earlier. Most of the prison, including the dingy cells where prisoners were kept before being shipped to Australia, is not part of the tour, but it is possible to see inside the Prison Chapel...
