...Prelude
In August of this year I was lucky enough to spend a few weeks travelling Provence and the South Of France. Here is what I had written at the time of my MonteCarlo experience...
After spending the last few weeks travelling the south of france in a motorhome, i thought i would share some of my experiences with you lucky lot and not least because i recieved the credit card bill through the post today!
The journey into MonteCarlo is quite unimpressive, very industrial and stark contrast to the picturesque landscapes surrounding MonteCarlo. You get the first taste of its financial implications by the increased frequency of the tolls upon its approach. It seemed like there was a toll booth on the roads every 10 mins as opposed to the every couple of hours we had experienced around Provence.
We arrived at night, a bit...
Advantages: Everything you would expect from a luxury hotel. Disadvantages: Distance from the clubbing scene
...The Columbus Hotel is an amazing, modern choice amongst the older options for accomodation in the world's trendiest principality. The first point to be noted is the exceptional location of the hotel: it is nested near the MonteCarlo port and within walking distance of charming waterfront restaurants. There is easy access to any point of the city from this luxurious hotel and at the same time, it is located in an area which escapes the rush of tourists which usually occupate the Place de Casino or the MonteCarlo Beach. The ocean front rooms provide a wonderful view of the radiant waters of the Med !
The service in the hotel is destinguishable. It is definately worth every one of the four luxury stars (max. available to French resorts) ! The staff was completely polylingual and demonstrated an enviable competence in English, French...
Advantages: Excellent selection of fresh fish. Great service. Disadvantages: A little pricey.
...INTRODUCTION
For me, one of the undoubted benefits of going on an island holiday is that you are usually not far from a fish restaurant. I do like a well grilled fresh fish, served simply with a wedge of lemon and a healthy sprinkling of parsley, black pepper and sea salt. On our almost annual visits to Cyprus, we stay in the Larnaka area and, as you can imagine, the seafront is teeming with eating establishments clamouring for our custom. I am a fairly reserved sort, and find the sidewalk ?greeters? - whose job it is to pull you toward the garishly displayed menu boards obstructively placed in the middle of the pavement - very off-putting. This sort of hard sell is not an experience I particularly enjoy, so a few years ago, I was very pleased to find an excellent fish taverna ? the MonteCarlo - a stones throw away from...
Advantages: Beautiful beaches Disadvantages: Nothing to do
...My boyfriend and I went to the South of France in the summer, we stayed in Nice after looking at the horrendous prices of the hotels in MonteCarlo! Then we planned for our first day to get a bus to MonteCarlo. The bus ride was great, they were more like coaches; comfy seats, seat belts, tv, AC, a toilet, everything!
We knew that MonteCarlo was a very luxurious city, so thought that we would be living the high life for the day, unfortunately not!
When we got off the bus, we went into the local shopping precinct. We entered on royal red carpets (which are all over montecarlo!) We were with our backpacks and wearing relatively scruffy clothes, and the whole time we were there, we were looked down on. We knew that there were going to be people alot better off than us, but we didn't expect to be treated like this.
We went to...

Review of MonteCarlo (Monaco)
Advantages: Wonderful, modern and relaxing Disadvantages: None!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
...Background:
The Columbus Hotel is located within the principality of Monaco which is a small area nestled between France and Italy, no longer than 3 miles across!
The hotel features 9 floors of cool, contemporary rooms and suites and was constructed in 2003 and is part owned by world renowned racing car driver David Coulthard. The hotel is located in the newly reclaimed area (from the sea!) Font Vielle and is approximately a 15 minute walk into MonteCarlo. The whole around the hotel is clean and new and it is less than a two minute walk to the beach and in under 5 minutes you will have walked to the fashionable Cap D'ail in France.
The location:
Surrounded by residential apartments the hotel is quiet without much passing traffic and you do get a sense of seeming some local colour and community a this hotel as one either...
Advantages: Appearance, character, central location Disadvantages: up a steep hill
...We had an enjoyable stay at this hotel.
What sold the hotel to us was its look. It has a traditional colonial appearance; a Madeira building that guests must have stayed at a 100 years ago. It has its own unique character and is such a contrast to all the big modern concrete blocks of hotels set along the coast. It may not be luxurious but it more than makes up with charm and grace of a bygone era.
Location
The hotel is situated in Funchal, the main town of the Portuguese island of Madeira.
The airport is located in the outskirts of the town so the transfer time here is short. The hotel is situated close to the centre of Funchal. However, it is positioned up a steep hill without public transport. As such it offers magnificent views over the town, the sea and the mountains. If you have children or you are not very mobile, however...
Advantages: Very Clean Disadvantages: Awful Food, Noisy, Far way from Palma Airport
...In October 2006 I went on an all-inclusive holiday for one week to Porto Cristo on the east coast of Majorca (Mallorca). I stayed in a hotel called the Monte Verde. It cost me £169 and I will now share my experiences of this hotel with you.
The Monte Verde Hotel was built in 1969 and was fully refurbished during the winter of 2000. The Monte Verde has a total of 140 rooms that are built over 7 floors.
When I pulled up to The Monte Verde I was not very impressed with the look of the hotel, it looked like a block of flats and was similar to some of the housing around Porto Cristo, which looked a bit basic and old fashioned. However The Monte Verde is only a 2 star hotel so I was not expecting too much.
Upon arriving inside at around midnight Majorcan time (+1 hour GMT), I was surprised to find nobody at the 24-hour front desk. I...
Advantages: Relaxing, very close to the beach,10 mins away from shops Disadvantages: not the place to go if you want nightclubs, as its the quieter side of the island
...I first stayed at this hotel, two years ago, with my boyfriend, and he and his parents had been going to this part of the island for many years,
but when he mentioned Ibiza my first thought was, its going to be very noisy, full of clubs, bars and lots of drinking,
as i had heard all the stories, but i thought i would go just to see, i couldn't have been more wrong,.
The hotel itself has just been redecorated, and is very well kept, there is an indoor bar, and restaurant and they also have an outside dinning area, but space is limited so you have to be early for dinner, there is a large pool, which has a seperated area for children,
There are steps leading down to the beach, and another outdoor bar just off to your left as you reach the bottom of the steps, which is also part of the hotel.
They have evening...
Advantages: Opulent location, full of designer boutiques and swanky restaurants Disadvantages: Very expensive and has limited appeal
...perfect because a) it isn?t very big and b) it?s all rather superficial. As such, after two or three days of the place, most visitors would probably have enough.
MonteCarlo is quite a hilly place. Nestled underneath the mountains, the streets decline steeply down towards the coast and from the air, the coast or the approach roads, the skyline is dominated by large tower blocks of apartments and hotels. The weather is warm nearly all year round and at certain times of the year, it?s very hot. I visited the place during the month of October and whilst it was cold and wet here, in MonteCarlo, it was warm enough for shorts and T-shirts.
Getting There
MonteCarlo is very accessible from the UK, due in part to the fact that Easyjet now flies to Nice, which is a short rail / coach ride from MonteCarlo. I flew via British Airways...

Review of MonteCarlo (Monaco)
Advantages: 5 star luxury, great breakfast, large bedrooms, private beach, large pool Disadvantages: expensive mini-bar
...I stayed in Le Meridien Beach Plaza from 1st -6th June 2008. I booked it about 4 weeks before we arrived with a friend for a last minute summer holiday. We booked the flights and hotel separately as i find this was the cheapest way to do it, instead of booking with an online travel agent e.g. last minute.com. We arrived at Nice airport around midday and instead of getting the usual taxi or shuttle bus to the hotel we decided to take an alternative form of travel. We decided to get a helicopter from Nice airport to Monaco. We found a link for this service on the le meridien website. The helicopter company is called HeliAir Monaco. It cost 70euros each for a 8 minute flight. However the views over the mediterranean are amazing. When we arrived at the helipad in Monaco a mercedes was waiting for us there to take us another 5 minutes by road...
