Diamond review  St Andrews in Summer

Advantages: Refreshing, friendly, plenty to do for all the family
Disadvantages: Often cold and wet, some activities very expensive

...? As with many tourist resorts, prices of hotels and various attractions do vary somewhat from season to season. It's always worth checking one of the online local information sites before making any plans. For instance: http://www.standrews.com/ - St Andrews net portal http://www.standrews.co.uk/ - Kingdom of Fife official tourist site http://www.saint-andrews.co.uk/ (Note that some of the required selections below aren't really relevant - daily budget depends on where you stay and what you do!)...

The Doll's House Restaurant, St Andrews

Advantages: great selection of food, good cheaper options, nice ambience
Disadvantages: feeling rushed, rubbish veg selection

...an unusual or particular diet. I also like that it's so child friendly - it even has a toy box and books etc for kids to play with, which is a great idea. The downfalls are the uninspired veg plate, the inflexible,(and sometimes a bit rude) managers, and I feel it looks a bit tired and grubby sometimes - but saying that, I think that's just part of the look, rather than a hygeine issue. The loos are a bit unpleasant too - although they are clean, I could only describe them as a bit scabby!! I do think though that this restaurant will always be a mainstay in St Andrews, and the fact that it is always so packed, only speaks for itself. St Deny's, the clean hotel for my dirty weekend!

Advantages: Polite and helpful staff, clean hotel.
Disadvantages: Bed a bot on the small side for my husband.

...After an incredible weekend away with my darling husband to celebrate our 9th wedding anniversary, I have now decided to do my first and quite possibly my last hotel review! Our destination of choice for this excursion was to be a place new to us, so of course the hotel had to be in a prime location at a price we could afford?fortunately we seemed to fall on our feet so to speak on both of these points. Our destination, to be exact was York, and due to the sheer number of attractions available to us, we wanted a hotel reasonably central, or at least within walking distance of the few sights we wished to see. After some extensive research, mostly through the designated York tourist board site, we came across the perfect hotel. St Denys hotel, a small but very quaint hotel, housing 13 rooms only, but with it?s own parking...

St Andrews

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

...Standing on the first tee at St Andrews you look forward onto a vast wide open space. An impossible to miss fairway which seems to stretch beyond anyone?s driving range. Behind you is the Royal and Ancient clubhouse where the rules of this great game are still administered and verified to this day. To your left is the shop of Tom Morris Open champion in the 19th century and a landmark which continues to draw visitors from all over the world. Beyond that the town of St Andrews with the oldest university in Scotland and to your right the waves of the North Sea sweep onto the shore of the beach. For beauty, history and the challenge of the golf course you are as near to heaven as a golfer can get whilst still breathing. The course was used for this years Open Championship and though the winner could easily have been predicted...

THE MAJESTY OF THE OLD COURSE, ST ANDREWS

Advantages: To play on one of the worlds best known courses, to sense the history and know that most of the famous golfers in the world have walked these fairways too.
Disadvantages: A fair number of blind tee shots and tees being too close to the previous greens.

...THE OLD COURSE Golf has been played here for approximately 600 years but the course as it stands only really evolved around 1850. It is a public course run by St Andrews Links Trust and has been used as a venue for the Open Championship 26 times. It has also hosted the Walker Cup amongst other amateur and professional championships. The Alfred Dunhill Cup has been played at St Andrews since its inception in 1985. The Old Course is situated in St Andrews which is about an hour’s drive from Edinburgh and 1.5 hours from Glasgow. It’s a fantastic setting steeped in history. The clubhouse of the R&A sits directly behind the first tee with the North Sea situated to the right. Several people had a hand in shaping the course - Old Tom Morris for one who was responsible for creating the first green as we know it today...

St Andrews rules

Advantages: Excellant departments, friendly
Disadvantages: Can get claustrophobic

...I'm a second year student at St Andrews at the minute so you could say I know what I'm talking about. St Andrews is a great university, its small and everyone is really friendly. St Andrews is very multi-cultural so where ever you're from its easy to fit in. If you're interested St Andrews has more pubs per square foot than anywhere else in Britain!! But if you're into nightclubs then you'll be disappointed, St Andrews is a nightclub free zone. Its a quiet little town and very conservative but it definitely has something to offer everyone. As St Andrews is so small there are not very many shops, but if you are a shopaholic like me Dundee is only a bus...

Grange St. Paul's is an amazing hotel!

Advantages: Amazing, all round
Disadvantages: None!

...This hotel is undoubtedly the best I have ever stayed in. Here's why... We booked this hotel as a top secret hotel through lastminute.com, paying £86 for the room for the night of Saturday 26th Septmeber 2009. For anyone who isn't familiar with lastminute's top secret system you basically get a star rating and description, but not the name of the hotel before you book. However, for London hotels if you put the description into Google you can easily find out which one matches the description, so we knew what we were getting before we booked. We arrived by Tube from King's Cross station to St. Paul's Underground station. From here the hotel is fairly easy to find. Just follow the signs for the cathdral then look for Godliman Street on the other side of the cathedral and you can't miss it. The transport links to the hotel are good...

MERTON HOTEL, ST SAVIOUR JERSEY

Advantages: lovely food, polite staff, great swimming pool
Disadvantages: no sea view, small television

...My husband and I have just spent 5 nights at the Merton Hotel in St Saviour in Jersey, Channel Islands. We stayed from Sundary 2 September 2007 to Friday 7 September 2007 and we had a great stay. The Merton Hotel is owned by Seymour Hotels and is a 3 star hotel. Jersey have their own system of rating hotels which is different to the UK, but the ratings are of a very high standard. We stayed in a double ensuite room and we had free half board for the price of bed and breakfast. We booked through Condor Ferries and took our own car and paid a total of £769 for the trip (£79 of which was for the car ferry travel). OUR BEDROOM +++++++++++++++ Our room was plainly and pleasantly decorated, with chrome light fittings everywhere. The furniture was ample, being a built in wardrobe, dressing table and chest of drawers...

ESSENTIAL SCOTLAND GUIDES - Fife

Advantages: So much to see and do.
Disadvantages: So much to see and do!

...I travelled to Scotland from my old home in England 16 years ago and loved it – so much so that within a year, I had moved house to live here! I’ve toured my new home country with my family quite a few times now, and I never tire of the scenery, the people and the fascinating history. When most people think of Scotland, they think of the bagpipes and kilts of St. Andrews, but there is much more to the country than that. Here’s one of a series of “ESSENTIAL SCOTLAND” guides to this amazing place… Where is Fife? Fife is the area of Scotland just north of Edinburgh across the Forth road bridge. Probably it’s most famous town is St. Andrews – “the home of golf”. But just like there's a lot more to...

New Yorks meets London in St Andrews

Advantages: Good Bistro and easy to park
Disadvantages: bit far for an evening out

...Lets have an outing a group of us decided. We meet regularly to discuss books, swap books and even sell and buy books, so when 84 Charing Cross Road written by Helen Hanff was coming to the theatre at St Andrews it seemed too good to be true. We fixed on the Saturday 11th November so we could have an afternoon in St. Andrews, then all meet at the bistro within the Byre theatre First snag was my friend was ill and so although she felt well enough for the theatre we decided to give the afternoon shopping a miss and go direct to the bistro. There was a little difficulty in finding the theatre but I managed to park just outside This was good because it was a wet and windy St Andrews if ever there was one. We arrived first and were shown to the booked table where we sat drinking coffee until the others arrived. The menus were...
