This book shines a spotlight on the causes and consequences of working poverty, revealing how the lives of low-wage workers are affected by differences in health care, labor, and social welfare policy in the United States and Canada. Dan Zuberi's conclusions are based on survey data, eighteen months of participant observation fieldwork, and in-depth interviews with seventy-seven hotel employees working in parallel jobs on both sides of the border. Two hotel chains, each with one union and one non-union hotel in Seattle and Vancouver, provide a vivid crossnational comparison because they are similar in so many regards, the one major exception being government policy.Zuberi demonstrates how labor, health, social welfare, and public investment policy affect these hotel workers and their families. His book challenges the myth that globalization necessarily means hospitality jobs must be insecure and pay poverty wages and makes clear the critical role played by government policy in the reduction of poverty and creation of economic equality. Zuberi shows exactly where and how the social policies that distinguish the Canadian welfare state from the U.S. version make a difference in protecting Canadian workers from the hardships that burden low-wage workers in the United States. Differences That Matter, which is filled with first-person accounts, ends with policy recommendations and a call for grassroots community organizing.

Brand expert, popular speaker, and Fortune 500 advisor Duane Knapp presents The BrandPromise(R), his secret formula for becoming a Genuine Brand. Making the right promise, keeping it, and fulfilling your BrandPromise commitment will transform your business or organization into a "one-of-a-kind" brand that customers, employees, and shareholders will trust and support for years to come. "A brand's promise is the new currency for success," says Knapp, who teaches from personal experience, having built or advised hundreds of successful brands worldwide. Duane Knapp's Promise philosophy has been highly acclaimed and extensively referenced and quoted in hundreds of publications and books. Brand success rests on three principles: 1) Provide a unique experience with products or services that enhance your customer's lives 2) Inspire employee partnership, passion, and support 3) Create a perception of exceptional value and distinctive benefits and deliver on your promise. Genuine Brands make a promise and keep it. This promise begins with a different mindset than business as usual. It's not just about doing a good job-it's about optimizing the emotional and functional benefits from a customer's perspective. The BrandPromise applies to every type of organization, from associations, philanthropic enterprises (charities and non-profits), and personal brands (celebrities, athletes and executives), to professional service firms (doctors), entrepreneurs, small businesses, and member-centric businesses (credit unions and co-ops). Knapp provides insights from a wide range of executives and leaders with in-depth analyses of many Genuine Brands, including Ketel One, Costco, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Destination Marketing Association International, SAFE Credit Union, Annika Sorenstam, Callison Architecture, RK Dixon, Bartell Hotels, and Tourism Vancouver. The BrandPromise book reveals the secrets that all kinds of organizations including associations, philanthropic enterprises (charit

A female co-worker is obsessed with him, but he ignores and avoids her. He leaves his acting resume in the hotel room of a woman screenwriter, who is casting for a TV movie based on the true story of her deceased brother. She hires him to play the lead and the two begin an affair. She becomes increasingly distraught as it becomes evident that the movie's producer is changing her story. Egoyan's trademark tangle of bizarre relationships surrounds the protagonists on their way to a mind-blowing conclusion. A hypnotic, fascinating film. Advantages: 4 Star hotel in Downtown Vancouver Disadvantages: Just a few extras to make the room better
...lighting for deaf in case the fire alarm was activated.
An excellent hotel in a lovely area, as within a few minutes we could walk along the harbourside , and sit and watch the boats and seaplanes, or turn the opposite way and visit the sights of Vancouver and shops and restaurants. Staff were friendly and helpful, food was first class. The only downside was no fridge in the bedroom...
Advantages: Great location, good facilities, great deal Disadvantages: You'll be lucky to get the same deal
It was the first time Ms Larsbaby and myself had been to Vancouver, and without first hand experience of knowing where to stay, we had a look on the net and took this hotel booked for us by the excellent Trailfinders, which was one of their options.
The Century Plaza is pretty much was the heart of the shopping and eating area of downtown on Burrard...
Advantages: Great city, great food, good value for money once you're there Disadvantages: Expensive to get to and long flight there
This was a daytrip for us from Vancouver by seaplane there and bus and ferry back, and so I think I can include this here as it's in the general area which you might want to see if you spend at least a few days here. We booked this at the excellent tourist information office, but you can also book this in advance or through your hotel. Be warned though...
