Venice the city of Sighs!

Advantages: Absolutely breath taking views around every corner.
Disadvantages: Very expensive packed during the day with day trippers.

...take you into Venice. 1. The bus. 2. A taxi which will only take you part of the way and drop you off near the station but then it would be quite a walk to the hotel or by connecting to the local water bus service serving the whole of Venice. 3. A water bus known as Alilaguna which leaves directly from the airport into Venice via four different routes depending where you are staying. 13 Euros each way or 25 Euros return. All routes end or pass St. Marks Square. 4. A water taxi at the princely sum of 95 Euros each way is obtainable next to the Alilaguna water bus pick up point and can take you directly to your hotel if it is on one of the canals. This is the fastest option but certainly not the cheapest. We had opted for number 3 which was fairly reasonable bearing in mind that it took approximately an hour to get from the airport...

Hitlon Hotel, Venice, Molino Stucky

Advantages: Great hotel, great location?
Disadvantages: Perhaps too big!

...Last year in the Sunday supplements I read about the new Hilton Hotel that had just opened in Venice and they had comments on the wonderful views and the roof terrace. As we had booked to visit Venice in March of this year, and had been several times before this was an opportunity to see another view of Venice from a different area. I had read that it is a large hotel and thinking about Venice and the size it must be out of the main Venice tourist area, we had not seen any building work on that scale the year before. The Hilton hotel is in the Giudecca area of Venice away from St. Mark's Square. We had to catch a water bus from San Zaccaria, over to Zitelle and then just wondered along until we arrived at the Hilton which is the other end of Giudecca Island. They do say that Elton John has a house in this part of Venice...

Venus in Venice.

Advantages: Lively, interesting and different.
Disadvantages: A bit expensive

...and all the goods for consumerism - The boat ambulance and police force -just about every thing. I only saw one person in a wheel chair and I would say that Venice is not really a place for the disabled but it made me think, I saw one bridge with a stair lift and some larger toilets at the airport. Maybe if someone stayed in a hotel on the Grand Canal they could manage with help but their itinerary would have to be planned thoroughly. So what is Venice like? We have all heard that although it smells it is also very romantic. In winter it does not smell unless you are near building works, we must remember that sewage goes into the water but saying that the water looks as clean as the Thames in London. There was a lot of renovation work it is probably due to the time of the year as the Venetians get ready for their summer visitors...

Diamond review  Venice In Peril? What About My Wallet?!

Advantages: Beautiful, unique, hasn't disappeared yet
Disadvantages: Daily budget - ouch

...CINQUE GIORNI A VENEZIA I?ve not previously spent long in Italy, apart from brief forays into the north whilst ?doing the passes? from Switzerland, and a couple of docking manoeuvres courtesy of a cheapo-cruise in the Med. (I?m the person who took one look at the queue for the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, and went and had a beer instead) It is therefore fitting, that in the year I start to add Italian to my list of ?languages of wine-growing nations? to which I can lay at least some claim to speak, that I should actually go there too. It was school half-term last week, and Mrs. Nibbles had been her usual profligate self with the holiday bookings, although to be fair, this was all done and dusted nearly a year ago, when she announced those momentous words ?I?ve booked us 5 days in Venice next February?. ?DOV?È?? ? Or ?I...

LITTLE GEM HOTEL IN VENICE CALLED LA FENICE

Advantages: location location
Disadvantages: the staff

...the hotel is famous for the artists and authors who have stayed there. The hotel is located just five minutes walk from St. Mark's Square. so a brilliant location only problem is finding it the first time as the directions to the hotel given by the hotel seem very complicated and not easy to follow. It is only 15 minutes from Rialto bridge and even closer to Acadamier so a perfect location. It is located in a quiet thoroughfare so no street noise . It is right by the famous opera house that was burnt down and has now been rebuilt in all its glory although to go for a tour is by special arrangement only. The hotel ambience was very much in keeping with Venice and has a quantness about it there is a little garden you can have your breakfast in and drinks in the evening although it is quite nice it is not beautiful.. The bedrooms were...

A Little Square in Venice

Advantages: Great location, comfortable, quiet, secure
Disadvantages: Single bedroom a little basic

...Last November I took my third trip to Venice. It hadn?t been my intention to go at all; this holiday was a joint birthday present from me to my parents but they insisted that I go along with them to show them around. Venice is a beautiful and unique city, so how could I refuse? ◄Discovering Hotel Campiello► I discovered the Hotel Campiello on my second trip to Venice a few years ago. We were on a 10 day trip to Italy and had decided to spend most of the time in Rome and Florence, trying to leave 2 or 3 days free to include Venice. We had booked our hotels in Rome and Florence in advance but left the booking of the Venice leg until we were in Rome. We were staying at Hotel Paba in Rome (itself a gem of a place) and told the owner that we were thinking of booking into one of the big luxury hotels in the Venice Lido for 2...

My Venice experience

Advantages: A must-go city to visit in Italy, before it disappear!!!
Disadvantages: No

...My first trip to Venice was via a package holiday. We spent a day there and I am going to share with you my fantastic day. We had an early start. by taking the train from the station behind the hotel to catch a boat to take us on the Grand Canal(Canal Grande) to the St Martin's Square(Piazza San Macro) in the centre of Venice. Got off the boat to take a walk on the waterfront-I could already see the gondolas parked. Venice is a very special city as it consists of many islands and canals-very interesting indeed. Walked passed the Palazzo Ducale, which used to be the office of the Mayor of Venice, took a picture of the Bridge of Sights with replica all over the world. The bridge connects the office of the mayor/governor to the dungeon opposite and it was the bridge that any sentenced prisons would walk pass to see Venice...

'Peaceful' Venice

Advantages: Sometimes can feel like you have the whole palce to yourself; Sheer beauty
Disadvantages: Having to walk to each place, or take the bus, and face the crowds again

...Venice does seem to be a place that is hit or miss with people. Those who love it cite the romantic location; the vibrancy; the sheer difference of being somewhere different. Those who hate it can't stand the pervading watery smell; the cost of everything; or the simple fact that it's always so very, very busy. I easily fall into the first category, and yet the crowds still annoy me. I like going somewhere to see different things, but I also like to relax, and I wasn't sure this was possible in Venice. Until our last visit earlier this year. So here are my tips for getting the most out of 'peaceful' Venice. Piazza San Marco We'll start with the obvious one, although you might not be thinking it so obvious if you've ever had to battle through the crowds of people and pigeons. But get there early, especially on a Sunday morning...

Venice On My Mind

Advantages: innumerable
Disadvantages: none for me

...I have to go from Germany to the South of Italy every year in summer. To shorten the long journey and to make it less exhausting I always put in a stopover in Venice. Is that true? No, it is what I tell my friends and acquaintances who feel the urge to advise me against it. Even if they have never been to Venice they know it is not worth seeing (any more) as it has become a kind of Italian Disneyland which the inhabitants have fled and where tourists only meet other tourists. They would rather abstain and preserve their dreams and complain the fact that they were born too late. Oh, had they lived when Byron stayed there and used to swim home after parties pushing a board with a candle through the canals to show him the way home! But today? Stinking water, garbage everywhere. A swim would mean if not immediate death at least...

Venice - a photographer's dream

Advantages: A totally different environment, traffic-free with wonderful sights and shops
Disadvantages: Cost of food & drink in St Mark's area.

...There can be few sights so instantly recognizable as the aproach to San Marco (St Mark's)in Venice. The thrill of seeing it for the first time must match that of one's first view of the Pyramids, the Manhattan skyline or the Eiffel Tower. The temptation will be to take an endless stream of photographs as your ferry approaches the landing-stage; however, almost everything in this magical water-city is photogenic so you would be better advised to just look, enjoy and absorb the wonder of it all. If you do approach the city this way, as so many do, be warned: the area around St Mark's is notable not just for its gandeur and beauty but also for its pickpockets and exceptionally high prices for food and drink. A cup of coffee in one of the many restaurants which line St Mark's Square will set you back the best part of a ten-euro note...
