House By The Cemetery, Night Behind A Cushion

Advantages: A welcome entry to the world of Italian Horror.
Disadvantages: Poor Dubbing.

...The House By The Cemetery or Quella villa accanto al cimitero Back in the early 1990's I stayed up to watch Mariella Frostrop's movie review programme. In this episode she reviewed the release of both this and The Burning; I immediately went out the following day and purchased House by the cemetery. I had never even heard of Lucio Fulci nor had I heard of any of his films. THE MOVIE ----------------- Dr. Norman Boyle has to move to a small New England town from New York to carry out some important research. In one of the opening scenes a scary child called Bob whilst looking at a picture of a house says "Mommy why is that girl talking to me" Of course there is no girl in the picture, well none that the boys mother Lucy can see. In typical Lucio Fulci style the house in the picture just happens to be the house they end up moving...

Time To Pull That Sofa Out!

Advantages: Scary, disturbing, thought provoking
Disadvantages: Bad dubbing and poor acting

...There are few movies that have been affected quite as badly as a result of the UK?s video nasty furore than The House By The Cemetery. In 1984 when certification kicked in and movies started to become banned when our government was trying to yurn us into a nanny state House By The Cemetery was one of the first to go. Ironically in 1993 after nearly ten years in the wilderness it was one of the first of the former video nasties to get a release, then by the now defunct S. Gold & Sons sub label Vipco (S. Gold & Sons are also now defunct but were former pioneers in the home entertainment industry). While it secured its release there was a considerable amount of time edited from the movie. As DVD took off and Vipco planned a DVD release of the movie they then presented it before the BBFC (British Board Of Film Classification) again where...

Are children monsters or are monsters children?

Advantages: Good atmosphere
Disadvantages: Wooden acting, dodgy special effects

...Norman and Lucy Boyle move, with their young son Bob, from New York to a house in a small town where Norman has been engaged to do some research. Almost immediately, they realise that there is something not quite right with the house - there are strange noises and things that go bump in the night - but think it must be their imagination. Then things begin to get out of control and the Boyles really begin to fear for their lives. Will they manage to escape from the house by the cemetery? And is there really something in the cellar that wants them dead? Having recently seen Black Cat, another eighties film directed by Lucio Fulci, I was interested in finding out a bit more about what made him tick and this film appeared in my radar. I knew not to expect a particularly high quality film, but thought that it would probably be...

Location Location Location

Advantages: A few good bits | Unintentionally funny
Disadvantages: Lots of bad bits | Dubbing | Stupid story

...Well, come on. If you decide to live in an old abandoned house by a mass cemetery surrounding the place then you?re bound to be asking for trouble. House by the Cemetery certainly adheres to that forgone conclusion to become another zombie flick from Lucio Fulci. This film is loosely linked to three other zombie flicks in the series, Zombie Flesh Eaters, The Beyond and City of the Living Dead and is no relation to House on the Edge of the Park. They don?t carry on in terms of story but all have the same basic elements lent to one another. Despite it being released theatrically in Britain it still got dubbed as a ?video nasty? and therefore got hold of some notoriety when it was finally released on video albeit with some cuts. So does it measure up to the violence of its predecessors or has the zombie lost its bite? House by...

You'll die laughing not of Fright

Advantages: It's hilarious
Disadvantages: it's really not meant to be

...Being something of a Horror film lover, when I saw this in my local Blockbuster on sale for £5.99 on DVD, well I had to buy it. I love horror films, even the cheesy ones, but I do believe that older horrors are generally better than the newer ones (One cay I will do an op on Jeepers Creepers just to show how bad it was!). Well, according to the box it had been BANNED and was re-released, this got me even more excited, I should have left the excitement there, but I didn?t. So, here my op on one of the most <thinks of a nice thing to say about the film?..> Erm, well here?s my op on The House by the Cemetery ? enjoy (Or not as the case may be).  The Plot (If you can actually call it that?) Ok, from what I can gather, a family move into a house which happens to be on a cemetery (and also have a grave in their hall way...

Because Mariella Frostrop Made me....

Advantages: Heavy on Gore and story building.
Disadvantages: It appears i'm the only person who liked it.

...mouthing the words "NOoooooo" something like this, it is said, is a warning. Bobs father has been giving a work assignment in a beautiful backwater of America known as Rome. Basically the director Lucio Fulci with his cast and crew would fly to America film as much as they could before the cops and other authorities caught on before scampering back to italy to finish the shoot. Back to the story, when they arrive it turns out the house is the exact house that Bob saw in the picture. Now a little deceptive is the title, The House By The Cemetery, there is no "by" involved, this house is smack bang in the middle of it. The house has a questionable history, it was a owned by the Freudsteins, Doctor Freudstein had some rather questionable tastes and experiments going on. The story is divulged as the movie progresses, but needless to say...

A Wooden Album by Crowded House?

Advantages: 'Woodface' includes some of the most sublime love songs ever written
Disadvantages: It's all a bit much and much the same; the tracks that do dare to be different, don't fit

...Although I will always consider Crowded House to be one of my ?Dad?s bands? I have to say that I?ve developed strong feelings for many of the groups songs over the years. Teenagers are funny like that; we?ll go off on our own tour of music, claiming that Eminem and Dr. Dre are ?da bomb? before realising it was The Beatles and folky bands like Fleetwood Mac and Crowded House that vied for our earphones all along. On a couple of occasions, my Dad has bundled my Brother and I ? along with my Mum ? into the car and driven about two hours away to Nottingham in a vague attempt to educate us in terms of music. By doing so, he was making us watch the Finn Brothers, a song writing duo that have had a fairly rocky past. Neil Finn ? the lead singer and metaphorical leader of Crowded House ? and Tim Finn were once in a band called Split Enz who...

Review of Woodface - Crowded House

Sheffield's Largest Cemetery

Advantages: Haven For Wildlife, Tranquil, Lots Of History
Disadvantages: Some May Consider A Little Bit Morbid

...also attended by several prominent people, including the Town Clerk and the Architects that had designed the Crematorium. The Cemetery is still used today and it is the largest Cemetery owned by Sheffield City Council. It covers an area of over 100 acres. Today there are over 1,600 Cremations take place here every year. City Road Cemetery is both deceptively large and green. From its main entrance on City Road it does look somewhat cluttered but if you wander inside through the fancy stone archway then you will quickly realise that the Cemetery extends well beyond the other side of the hill, on which the Crematorium stands. The archway entrance is the only way into the Cemetery for vehicles, although there are several entrances available if you are visiting on foot. There is a Car Parking area situated just outside this archway...

Review of City Road Cemetery, Sheffield

Good actors in a not quite ordinary ghoststory.

Advantages: Good actors, scary and mystic story and surroundings
Disadvantages: There are sometimes exaggerated scenes of violence

...An american family is moving to a house in the country. The young son has been warned by a girl, that no one else can see, not to enter the house, but of course nobody believes him when he tells his parents about this. When the family has moved into the house, strange things start to happen. They hear scary noices that seem to come from the basement. When they finally manage to open the embarked basementdoor, they realize that things are worse than they could ever have imagined... The movie is directed by Lucio Fulci, an italian horror cultdirector, who never spares the gory details, such as decapitations. If you're easily frightened and disgusted by such things, even if it's just a movie, this movie is probably not for you. This is a quite suggestive, gripping and scary ghoststory. Nothing for the fainthearted. One of Fulci...

Highgate Cemetery - a different afternoon out

Advantages: Tranquility, atmosphere
Disadvantages: No facilities

...the summer and up to 3pm in the winter and cost £5.00. It is worth getting there up to 30 minutes in advance at peak times as they will only take 12-15 people per tour. Each tour lasts 55 minutes. Do not be put off by the rottweiler in the skirt and cardigan coming out of the gates. Although she may remind you of the rules often, she was instrumental in starting up the Friends of Highgate Cemetery started and is the reason you are able to visit it. Key rules to remember are no bare shoulders, no eating, drinking and smoking. The ground is uneven and there is a slight incline which should not bother most people, but could be difficult for the elderly. Our guide was called Alex, a knowledgeable American chap who took us around the West cemetery and showed us some of the key graves and told us some interesting stories about some...
