No one uses colour like Chinese director Zhang Yimou--movies like Raise the Red Lantern or Hero, though different in tone and subject matter, are drenched in rich, luscious shades of red, blue, yellow, and green. House of Flying Daggers is no exception; if they weren't choreographed with such vigorous imagination, the spectacular action sequences would seem little more than an excuse for vivid hues rippling across the screen. Government officers Leo and Jin (Asian superstars Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro) set out to destroy an underground rebellion called the House of Flying Daggers (named for their weapon of choice, a curved blade that swoops through the air like a boomerang). Their only chance to find the rebels is a blind women named Mei (Ziyi Zhang, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) who has some lethal kung fu moves of her own. In the guise of an aspiring rebel, Jin escorts Mei through gorgeous forests and fields that become bloody battlegrounds as soldiers try to kill them both. While arrows and spears of bamboo fly through the air, Mei, Jin, and Leo turn against each other in surprising ways, driven by passion and honour. Zhang's previous action/art film, Hero, sometimes sacrificed momentum for sheer visual beauty; House of Flying Daggers finds a more muscular balance of aesthetic splendour and dazzling swordplay. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com ... less

House of Flying Daggers: Breathtaking
Advantages: beautiful filming, storyline and soundtrack
Disadvantages: subtitles (film is in Mandarin Chinese)
...I bought 'House of Flying Daggers' after enjoying 'Memoirs of a Geisha', and also because of a general interest in Chinese culture. This is a beautiful film; beautiful in its story, its cinematography, and its soundtrack.
The storyline blends action and romance genres. The film opens in 859 AD, with the power of the Tang Dynasty in decline, and many revolutionary groups rising up against it, including the 'House of Flying Daggers'. Two captains, Leo and Jin, think that a blind dancer/'showgirl' called Mei could be a member of this society, and so they plan to use her in order to find the new leader, who they have been ordered to kill. After spectacular dance and martial arts scenes, Jin and Mei get arrested (all part of the plan), so that Jin can then free her, gain her trust, and be lead to the House of Flying Daggers.
The story...

有 A FILM OF RARE BEAUTY 有
Advantages: A visual feast.
Disadvantages: Subtitles. Some may not like them.
...有 House of Flying Daggers. 有
Having watched this film on TV the other night I was so stunned by it's Cinematography that I felt I had to attempt to write my first Film review, and try and put down in words just how stunning I thought this film was.
◘ House of Flying Daggers is a Film in the Wuxia Genre. The style is similar to that of 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon', and 'Warriers of Heaven and Earth'. Released in 2004, it falls into the category of action/romance. It's different to other Wuxia films as it is not so much a Martial Arts Film persay, it is more of a love story. Directed by Zhang Yimo, it is one of the most visually striking films I have seen.
◘►Synopsis.
◘ With the Tang Dynasty in decline, rebel splinter groups were forming, the largest of these being a secret s...

A Tale of Tragic Love
Advantages: Some of the best cinematography ever
Disadvantages: Plot a little flawed
...House of Daggers is a martial arts epic set in the Tang Dynasty 859.AD and directed by the Chinese director, Zhang Yimon who was also responsibe for the direction on the movie Hero which was made in 2004.
The title is somewhat misleading as the main focus of the film is the romance between Jin (Takeshi Kaveshiro), a police offiicer who serves his emperor and Mei (Ziyi Zhang), a young woman who belongs to an undercover resistance group, called House of Flying Daggers. Like Robin Hood and his men, these are a band of warriors who steal from the wealthy to give to the poor.
Jin first comes across Mei when he is sent to follow up rumours about a Flyiing Daggers agent who is being hidden in the Penny Pavillion brothel. Enthusiastic about his task he pretends to be a customer and taunts the ladies until he is introuduced to the new...
