Brilliant BRIO

Advantages: Cheap, fast, stable, AGP slot
Disadvantages: Limited upgrade potential

.../giving some of it away as surplus to requirements - and it is all built into the cost so you are wasting money. For just over £700 I bought a BRIO BA410 from Jungle (plus £10 for next day delivery). This is with: * Pentium III 800 MHz, * 128 Mb RAM, * 10Gb hard drive, * 56K PCI modem, * 10/100 PCI LAN card, * onboard sound, * onboard VGA * 48 x CD drive * Windows 98, * Word 2000 + CD * Norton Antivirus * Keyboard * Scroll mouse * HP recovery CD, Drivers CD * 3 year warranty – First year next business day onsite There are plenty of variants that can be selected e.g. with or without Word, Celeron or PIII processors, with or without modem or LAN card etc etc. I think the price is a bargain. For this kind of specification, I simply could not find a better priced PC. The nearest rival would be either some...

HP D1470 Inkjet Printer.

Advantages: Very cheap, durable, and excellent for the amateur computer user.
Disadvantages: Tray a little too small, and a few issues with packing the tray with paper.

...I bought the D1470 on special offer in Argos several months ago for £19.99, the current price on promotion being £18.74 (as of the 9th February 2008), although my local store is having difficulty getting the item into stock again (the predecessor, D1460 is available on Amazon just shy of £24). Again, home delivery options are apparently limited with the item currently out of stock in their distribution centre, so be prepared to be disappointed. Ebay auctions are available, but you will be looking at between £25 - £29.99. Typical ink cartridge prices (genuine HP) are currently £12.89 in Argos for black, and £16.99 for colour (this printer taking the standard 2 cartridges, not the mixers in other printers). The D1470 is unabashedly marketed as a budget printer, but is, however, an excellent printer for the price, even close to...

Bright and Brilliant Brio Blocks

Advantages: Tactile, striking, appealing, useful, develop children's skills
Disadvantages: A little pricey maybe

...The other reviews in this section have dealt with Brio's most famous range...their trainsets. Brio also produce a whole range of other toys which are also available on their website and this review is for one of the products I particularly like. BRIO 30156 Wooden Toys: 50 Coloured Blocks Wooden blocks have to be the most enduring toy for young children. I have fond memories of my basic wooden building blocks which I used up until the age of 8 or 9, creating bridges, castles, houses, dragon?s lairs and all the other props necessary to the action I was imagining. So when my daughter was born, we bought her a set. So did my mum. So did my husband?s parents. So did my best friend. Then I found a set very cheap in a charity shop?and another at a car boot fair. After a while and after lots of sore feet (those things have sharp corners...

Short and straight Brio track.

Advantages: Usefull pieces of rail
Disadvantages: None

...Brio Mini straight tracks . These small pieces of straight track are actually a very useful addition to a Brio track. Thee are 4 pieces in this pack http://www.thelittlehencompany.com are selling it for £3.95. There are many other online shops selling this for similar prices. Just search for the best deal. These mini straight rails are not all the same 2 of the pieces of rail have at opposite ends one male/lug and one female /hole joining part 1 of the other pieces has two female /holes joining parts , the remaining piece has both ends with a male /lug joining part. Each piece is small and measures 54 mm 2? These pieces are as I said incredibly useful. If you are constructing an elaborate railway circuit then you may well find you have left a very small space to fit a piece of track or you are stuck with two male /lug...

A Brio wagon for those heavy loads

Advantages: good addition to the railway
Disadvantages: side flap might be weak

...Come on join me playing with the Brio train set again. This time it?s a loads wagon 33654 that I am playing with. The load?s wagon is a bright red. It is an open carriage suitable for transporting many things. This Brio wagon suitable for a child aged over 3 years old. This wagon measures 3.35 inches /8cm. The wagon base is beech wood the open carriage is red plastic. The side wall of the carriage can flip down by pressure on the side clips. In side the carriage there is a green metal cylinder this can be picked up by a magnetic crane. At the ends of the carriage are magnetic couplers. This carriage will be attracted to a brio train and can be pulled along the railway line. At one end of this wagon is a south magnet pole at the other end a north one so your child will need the carriage turned the right way for the engine to pull...

HP PhotoSmart D7160 - one year of use

Advantages: Easy to use. Good colour reproduction. Easy to change inkjets.
Disadvantages: Must use 100 gsm paper or else printer constantly jams or damages output

...I bought this printer because I was fed up forking out lots of money for ink jet cartridges which would run out of one colour and mean that the rest of the ink was unused. So in December 2007 I purchased the HP PhotoSmart D7160. This printer has individual inkjet cartridges for each colour. However in January 2008 the printer just packed up and would not work. I contacted Hewlett Packard and explained that I had no idea why it would not work. They were very helpful, non-judgemental and identified the problem (technical and beyond my ken) and arranged for me to send the printer back. The carrier collected it and replaced it with a brand new printer. It worked like a dream. The aftersales service cannot be faulted. I use the printer for making leaflets and printing photgraphs. This means I tend to use a lot of blue and black...

Does your Matchbox car need to cross the Brio railway line ?

Advantages: Great addition to the Brio train track
Disadvantages: none

...Does your Matchbox car need to cross the Brio railway line ? If so then go to the 33388 BRIO Railway Crossing . This crossing will allow your car to cross the line safely without being ploughed down by the wooden magnetic brio express. This crossing does have a section of rail with male and female connectors at opposite ends it will fit in anywhere along the track . With this crossing comes a straight piece of track too. You do need someone to control this crossing to raise and lower the red safety barriers which are fitted in yellow wooden posts. The grey road with white road markings crosses the track. You can use toy road or draw a road onto paper or card to extend the road for the cars. With this set also comes two free standing red crossed barrier warning safety signs these are on short wooden posts fixed to...

Nikon D90 - My Next 'Last' Camera

Advantages: Movies, LiveView, 12.3 mpixels, build quality, excellent lens range
Disadvantages: Still quite bulky for casual use. Expensive if that's all you want it for

...There?s been a legion of digital cameras that have passed through my hands since they started to become a serious contender for 35mm?s domination of the amateur market. Going from memory, they?ve included Philips, Casio, Canon, Nikon and errr?..Nikon. Of course the last one, my first DSLR, a Nikon D70 was going to be the last; but then we all say that don?t we, lads? What I really meant was ?the last for quite a while?. LOOKS LIKE THE ?QUITE A WHILE? HAS EXPIRED Then my daughter started making noises about a night-school class in photography, where the minimum kit requirement just so happened to be a DSLR, and I got to thinking about letting her have the D70 for a ?song?, whilst good ol? Dad treats himself to the later and much higher-specified D90. Since I bought the D70 four or five years back, things have moved on apace...

Constructing with Brio

Advantages: really good toy
Disadvantages: None except the price

...We bought my grandson the Brio 34534 Builder System: Construction Vehicles Set. This set cost us £39.99p. The recommended age for this toy is 5 years. I think that's about right a child may be able to manage to build this at a bit earlier age but certainly over 4 years old. I think I can see Adrian playing with this until he is about 8 years old This set comes with 244 pieces and includes a flashing light and engine sounds. There are 2 button batteries needed these came with the set. There are heavy duty wheels and linking pieces to make a caterpillar track also included are 3 plastic tools a screwdriver, a hammer a spanner. Basically this set makes construction vehicles; it will make 5 different ones. It makes a digger, a carrying truck a caterpillar vehicle and other pieces of machinery I do not know the name off The pieces...
