Media Center without an XBOX
Advantages: The media center interface, decent codec support, HD movies stream really well.
Disadvantages: The DVD player is terrible.
...Okay, the big pull of this DVD player is the built in Media Center Extender software, which once set up runs really well. You need to have vista installed on a PC (which needs to be on for it to work) and you also need a good network connection between the two. I have tried both a 200mbps powerline ethernet network and a wireless N network and for me the wireless network performed better for HD movies, but this will differ for most people so just make sure you arn't relying on a bog standard 54mbps wifi connection.
The built in DVD play is poor to say the least, it doesn't scale DVD's out to widescreen it simply takes the DVD's basic resolution and outputs it to the middle of the screen. I tried watching an old cracker and had to stop as it was displayed as a 640x480 picture in the middle of my 720p HDTV, believe me this looks...

Hp DV9030ea media entertainment system - Excellent but overheats
Advantages: Powerfull, stylish, many featured, Large display with built in camera and full Keyboard.
Disadvantages: Overheating, noisy fan and short battery life. It's large and Heavy.
...The laptop is a powerfull laptop with a 1.8x2 ghz processor and Nvidea Go 7600 256mb graphics card and looks very stylish but has a terrible overheating problem which you can feel if you have it balanced on your legs; even with space for the fan your always jiggleing it about wondering if it has enough air (The fan is quite noisy).
It has a large 17inch display, bluetooth and built in camera and touchpad. Full sized keyboard. Touch panel buttons for media centre and quickplay. 4 USB ports, express card slot with tv aereal
I like it a lot but it burns out once a year. The graphics card is fixed to the motherboard so when it goes you have to replace the motherboard too. HP did give me a great fast service on the extended warrantly on this problem (see the website under dv9030ea) but the problem is the pain of having to keep replacing...

Windows Media Center 2005 - My HTPC
Advantages: User Friendly, Easy to Use, Value for Money, Comprehensive Operating System.
Disadvantages: Poor Documentation, Titanic Struggle Installing Operating System
...I have a DVD player, CD Player, A/V Amplifier sitting in my front room all linked to my LCD TV and Sky Digi Box. They all work fine but it does take up quite a bit of room and I'd realistically like an HTPC set up to bring my multimedia module into one unit!
Enter Windows Media Center 2005!
My setup consists of a Silverstone LC16M Case which houses an Asus A8N-SLi Motherboard, Hauppage PVR 250, Maxtor Diamond Max 250GB Hard Drive, 1GB Crucial Dual Channel DDR Memory to name just the main core of my system.
Contents of Windows Media Center 2005 Pack.
You will be supplied with two CD's, a Setup Guide and a Product Key to be placed on your system. To make full use of Media Center it is recommended that you also purchase a Media Center Remote Control & Extender.
Installation of Media Center 2005.
Installation of most...

Logitech diNovo Media Desktop Laser
Advantages: Ergonomic, rich functions, innovative
Disadvantages: High price
...I consider Logitech to be one of the best manufacturers of input devices and I have been using their products for years. So I would like to give you my own perspective as a professional and a consumer.
A couple of years ago I was looking for a wireless keyboard/mouse solution with a mouse power adapter. The diNovo media desktop just came out that year and I was well impressed by its slick design and excellent features. However, its price was an issue, as it was about 3 times more expensive than other similar solutions on the market at that time. As a Logitech product fanatic I finally decided to give it a go. So I took it back to my office and I set it up.

HP DV9655EA, The Modern Life
Advantages: Everything, AMD Dual Core, Graphics, Looks, Performance, Specs
Disadvantages: None
...The HP DV9655ea.
As a small business owner (I.T) I have to have a Laptop. It's as simple as that. My old laptop was a Toshiba Equium M70 on XP. Being in I.T meant that I had to have the latest OS from Microsoft in order to help clients when they need help with Vista.
Usually when somebody asks me to find them a laptop for their needs, I can do it swiftly, effectively and find them their perfect laptop.
This was not to be the case with me, I sat there for hours and hours going through supplier products. The main 3 I whittled myself down to where Toshiba, HP and Acer.
I already had a Toshiba and to be honest, I really thought the speakers on their new version looked naff. Acer, a pretty budget make and often need repair.
After going through specs after specs, I chose this laptop, Down to the build quality, reliability...

Logitech DiNovo Media Desktop
Advantages: Perfect Keyboard, Lightweight, Excellent Build Quality,
Disadvantages: Cost, Software
...This is an excellent piece of hardware, truly excellent. Unfortunately it would be absolutely magnificent if it was not for a few small problems...
The package comes with the keyboard, media keys, mouse and the bluetooth USB hub.
= Keyboard
This was the initial selling point for me. If you are a fan of the zero travel 'laptop style' keyboards then this is definitely for you. The keys themselves are comfortable and difficult to mis-hit and pose no trouble for lengthy typing sessions.
The lettering on the keys is very well applied and will not rub off.
Battery life for me has been a lot better than I expected - I rarely have to change batteries and I am a HEAVY user. I would be surprised to change the batteries more than every 8-9 months.
=Media Pad
For me this was kind of useless for many reasons. Firstly I personally...

A top-quality machine from HP
Advantages: Looks brilliant, huge screen, very powerful
Disadvantages: Size and weight (only to be expected), short battery time
...for system restore files, and after about a month and a half of use, I have used 47 GB and have 96.7GB remaining.
Manufacturer Support:
As I mentioned earlier, there is a live chat thing with HP, so that they can attempt to solve your problems. They successfully helped me with my webcam, but as yet, they still haven't helped me to fully link my pc with the other computers on the network at my house, so I can't print without saving the file in my public folder, then going to the desktop that the printers are connected to, and opening it from there. I think this is probably due to the other computer running XP, so there are some compatibility issues, and it might also be the firewall blocking me. So manufacturer support has been of mixed quality?
[UPDATE: I have now got file and printer sharing functioning fully between this Vista laptop...

The Very Sexy HP Pavilion
Advantages: Remote control, touch controls and an integrated 1.3 megapixels web cam
Disadvantages: The battery life and the Windows Vista operating system
...love this feature as it comes in useful for turning the computer on and for controlling many of the entertainment and quickplay functions, as well as sound control. The extremely slim remote is a very stylish thing on its own to add to the overall presentational effect this laptop oozes.
Like nearly all new computers now the HP Pavilion comes with Windows Vista pre-installed. There seems to be many critics against Windows Vista and I must admit I am one of them. Windows Vista seems to only really change the layout and upgrade the desktop appearence, from what I have found Vista has just changed the look of most things to do with the laptop while keeping the same features but presented in a different way. This results in immediate confusion until you manage to work out the layout and the ins and outs of the system (which should in fairness...

HP Pavilion DV6625em - high spec, shiny; questionable quality?
Advantages: Nice to use; wonderful screen and features
Disadvantages: Appalling customer service; cracks on lid; poor A/C adaptor reliability
...which was a nice touch. The unit was fairly lightweight, which was a relief after my previous heavy laptop, and it didn?t get too hot. Battery life was excellent and the software ran very smoothly because of the high specifications. There were also handy touchpad style keys to control media programs (ie stop, play, fast-forward and volume control buttons). Unfortunately there are other buttons on that row that will launch a HP Multimedia program, which happened by accident a fair bit. I would also have preferred a physical volume wheel but it?s not really a problem.
The laptop also came with a remote-control for multimedia applications ? I haven?t made much use of it but it is nice to have, and very impressive. It?s designed to be stored in the PC card slot but I nearly got it stuck in there once so I haven?t dared put it in there since...
