Fancy a Pizza Anyone
Review of HP ProLiant DL360 G3 - Xeon 2.8 GHz by  grovej

Advantages: Small and Cheap
Disadvantages: Cabling can be a bit of a nightmare

...company is ideal. The support website of HP is very good and easy to navigate, that may be because I have been using it for a long time! On the site you can get copies of documentation, firmware, drivers and all the other things you require to support the server. On feature I make good use of is the automated notification for products, you can register your 'e' mail address and HP will send you an alert when there is a new drivers or firmware available for the server ********** Performance************* The DL360 is one of the low end servers from the DL range, I have deployed lots of these servers as WINS and DHCP server, they have performed exceptionally well and for the size provide compact power. We were going to consider using these for our Citrix deployment, but opted to go for blade servers instead as they provide better... Read review

Powerful HP Server!
Review of HP ProLiant ML370 G5 Performance - Dual-Core Xeon 5150 2.66 GHz by  andycharger

Advantages: Lots of resource, processor power and expansion
Disadvantages: Price and extras needed.

...Fantastic performance , flawless reliability and reassuringly pricey is a good way to describe one of our Proliant ML370 servers here in the office. If you need your server to deliver cutting edge technology with bulletproof backup, this is a must for any self respecting IT guy. The Proliant range from HP has been around for a few years but the latest generation takes advantage of shrinking sized parts and components and power saving methods to evolve an already successful product. We have both the G5 and G4 models of this server and the main obvious change is the disk size. The hard disks (and it can take up to 8 of them) and the newer slimline serial SCSI type rather than the Ultra SCSI in the G4. Faster and with the same lightning response time, they obviously draw less power resouce from your server and power supply... Read review

HP ProLiant DL380G3
Review of HP ProLiant DL380 G3 - Xeon 3.2 GHz by  mdallen

Advantages: High Density, excellent availabilty
Disadvantages: Default SmartArray5i does not have option to add battery cache

...We have 12 of these machines, all with dual 2.8Ghz Xeons. The thing I like most about them is that almost everything is hot-plug. From the drives, to the fans, power supplies to the pci cards. Opening the top cover leads to an incredibly well laid out system. PCI cards can be installed and de-installed (assuming the OS supports it) while the system is up and running. I'd highly recommend you invest in the redundant fan option kit. If you're installing another processor then you really need to have this. On a downside, the only thing that springs to mind is there is no front USB port available. With floppy discs disapppearing these days, it would have been nice. HP seem to have realised this and on the G4 servers there is now a front USB, and no floppy drive. Managability wise these servers are fantastic. We went from using... Read review

Power where required Excellent Managability
Review of HP ProLiant DL740 - Xeon MP 2 GHz by  grovej

Advantages: The managability of Proliants is second to none
Disadvantages: Accountants will try to make you buy cheaper

...I have worked with servers for 6 years now and have never found any manufacturer of servers the comes close to the HP/Compaq Proliant range. What sets Proliants apart from the rest of the field is the managability tools that HP provide. The DL740 comes from the density optimized line, this means that there are some sacrafices that are made to package the server smaller. DL servers don't typically have many hard disk slots as the low end servers DL360 etc are normally used for infrastructure services and the high end DL580, DL740 for SAN attached functions such as databases, or file servers, they also typically don't have as many PCI slots as the ML range. ********** Specification************* The DL740 is the top end of the DL range and will accept either 4 or 8 Intel Zeon processors ranging from 2.0GHz to 3.0GHz , the server... A dense server that takes 6 disks
Review of HP ProLiant DL380 G3 - Xeon 3.2 GHz by  grovej

Advantages: Takes 6 disks in a 2U package
Disadvantages: Not a great deal

...The DL380 is the main staple of the server estate for my current company, the server is into it’s 4th generation and this review focuses on the 3rd generation. For some reason I think because they are thin but wide and long they got named pizza boxes. This review is on the G3 model of the 360 there is now a G4 model available but I have not seen any of these as yet. The DL380 comes from the density optimized line, this means that there are some sacrifices that are made to package the server smaller. DL servers aren’t typically as expandable as the ML line servers and can only be rack mounted, typical applications for the DL380 are departmental file/print servers, and small data base servers. ********** Specification************* The DL380 is at the mid low end of the DL range and will accept either 1 or 2 Intel Zeon processors... An excellent, Expandable server and Cheap!
Review of HP ProLiant ML110 G5 - Dual-Core Xeon 3065 2.33 GHz by  Steboyuk

Advantages: Quick, Cheap
Disadvantages: Better (albeit more expensive products) are out there

...I got this product free from my brother after my old one had broken - I was instantly impressed; personally, I feel that this server provides all the necessary server features in an affordable, functional package. The Intel processor provides the necessary computing power, while a mix of PCI and PCI-Express slots deliver the expandability for the future if you wanted to expand you system, whether it just be for your personal needs, or if you are serious and need it for business purposes. This server has always been very efficient for me and quick. I didnt need to upgrade it, but after speaking to somebody from HP, i was assured that it would be very simple to do so, and should still work to a very similar standard. I have drawn up a list of this products vital features so you can compare it to other similar products (just incase... Read review

Decent Server, Decent Price
Review of HP ProLiant DL140 G3 - Dual-Core Xeon 5110 1.6 GHz by  bllward

Advantages: Small, lightweight, cheap
Disadvantages: Not very powerful

...We use three of these little servers in our environment. They don't take up much space, and can be used for basic tasks such as hosting websites, domain controllers and as virtual servers in test environments. The hardware is capable, if not very exciting. The dual core Xeon is the high point of the machine, providing decent performance for low end tasks. 1GB of DDR2 is just enough to get by these days, but the roles mentioned above don't require anything special. The servers we use all have the SATA option with mirrored RAID arrays. For the price, the performance is unbeatable. One downside of going for these servers rather than for one it's big brothers is that you cannot use HPs incredibly useful SmartStart software to pre-setup the machines for deployment. As these servers use SATA, Windows XP, 2000 server and 2003... Read review

A Fantastic Server!
Review of HP ProLiant DL380 G5 Base - Dual-Core Xeon 5160 3 GHz by  andycharger

Advantages: Reliable, powerful, robust
Disadvantages: Im yet to find one. Maybe the hidden costs in addtional items.

...While we have tinkered with vitualisation in the office, we now have a definitive path forward and needed a robust, reliable new server that had maximised uptime and ease of remote management. Therefore we have opted for a DL380 G5 and we have not been disappointed! Read on for more details of this great server and how it become such an important part of our setup. LOOKS/SIZE. The DL380 is really designed to slot into a server cabinet or rack and therefore comes in the standard 2U height configuration. It takes up minimal space in the rack while maximising the the performance. Weight is extremely heavy. It takes 2 of you to pick it up and even install the rail mounting kit (sold separately) that you use to slide it into the rack. What I do like about the mounts on this server is it gives you the option to add 2 extra bolts... Read review

Great value servers
Review of HP ProLiant ML370 G4 - Xeon 3.6 GHz by  goosey2

Advantages: Good build quality, easy setup
Disadvantages: Looks a bit dated

...I have been building server for about 10 years now and have tried many different brands, such as NEC, DELL, Fujitsu, ASUS and IBM and none of them compare, except maybe IBM X series as a very close second, to the HP ML300 range for build quality and ease of setup. Although the front is a little bland and dated looking, it is functional and easy to access. When you take the lid off and look inside you can immediately see that a lot of thought has gone into the design and positioning of the components. The airflow is well directed over the memory and CPU's whilst still being easy to access when it comes to installing additional components. The Smart start cd that comes with it makes configuring it a breeze. Even with a basic understanding of server technology almost anyone can get it up and running with the minimum of effort...
