Ultimate Copy Cat
Advantages: Speed and Quality
Disadvantages: I must admit the Cost is High But you get what you pay for.
...Ok well im about to start a review on something that I never thought I would rave about. Its a Scanner! They have been out for ages, they were very usefull in the past but for years now I could do with out them. Once I stored all my old family photos in and saved them to Disk I got rid of my Scanner because I never used it after that.
Well Recently at work we have been working on a project. For obvious Reasons I cant say what it is, but all the drawings and instruction manuals and Schedules were all on old bits of paper, the best part of thirty years old. There were litterally 100s of 1000s of pages, nothing on computer just all Paperwork. There was only one copy of everything. The boss decided to invest in a scanner that could cope with all this paperwork and get the copies on PC. He bought this, hence why Im writing about it.

HP Improves There Scanners
Advantages: Very Good Quality, Excellent SilverFast Software
Disadvantages: Abit Large, Dust Removal Software Not Good
...The HP ScanJet 8300 is a Professional Image Scanner from HP's Scan jet series. This is one of the top end Scanners HP manufacture and is ideal for the business domain. There is also an 8300gp model of this scanner which is a Graphic Arts scanner and has a monitor color-meter calibrator as a added feature ideal for graphic designers.
Now about the HP ScanJet 8300, the scanner has an OR (Optical Resolution) of 4800x4800dpi and will scan high dynamic range in 48bit colour. This is fine for transparency and negative scanning.
The scanner has a max reflection area of around A4 size. HP includes film holders which will hold 3 strips, 6 frames of a 35mm film. The holders can be placed in the base of the scanner for storage.
The ScanJet 8300 is supplied with HP's own photosmart software. I wasn't impressed with the scan pro scanning...

Great Scanner
Advantages: good quality scanning
Disadvantages: software is rubbish, can take for ever to scan an image
...I bought myself this to scan various things (old photos, documents and some sheet music) and this does the job pretty well. It was a bit on the expensive side but I needed something that would give me good quality and I could trust that it would work well so I went for HP as they are well known for good quality products.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
It can scan at up to 4,800 dpi (dots per inch)
It has 96 bit colour
It has a 216x311mm scanning screen
Connects by USB
It is 303x508x108mm (wxdxh)
It weighs 5.2 kg
So it can give you very good quality, it gets a lot of colours, it's got a decent sized scanning screen, it's pretty big and it's not a light weight utility. There is nothing in there to put me off though because I still bought it.
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT IT
Scanners have been dying out because they are getting beaten by...

My HP Scanjet 2400 Experience
Advantages: Inexpensive
Disadvantages: Not too user-friendly
...My HP Scanjet 2400 experience began when I inserted the installation CD, this began to run and immediately stopped with a 'Macromedia Projector' error message. I presume 'Macromedia Projector' is software used to momentarily give a flashy display before the installation starts. Overkill that died!!! I am running Windows XP Service Pack 2 so my guess is that there was a conflict.
So I explored the CD, found the Setup files and ran these to install the software. I think this worked, although I have no idea if I got the full software set.
Next I tried to scan a series of A4 (paper size) documents as A4 documents using the HP Director control software. Could I do this? Not without a good deal of manual intervention because after each scan the scanner insisted on removing the margins and I had to manually drag them back into place...

Slim. Sharp. Stylish. The Scanjet 2400.
Advantages: Fast, simple image scanning. Very stylish design. Excellent Price.
Disadvantages: None!
...off to my nearest computer fair, to search for a brand new scanner. I hadn't much to spend on the day, just under 40 quid infact, so owning the creme de la creme of scanners wasn't an option.
I did however, find the HP Scanjet 2400 in one stall, looking most impressive on the box, I found myself checking out the specifications and asking the stall owner the price.
The gruff reply was "37.99 mate", awesome, I thought. Even got enough money left for a happy meal!
So I strolled out of the place lugging...)well not so much lugging it must have only weighed a couple of kilograms) a brand new scanner.
The Scanner
Upon arriving home I went about setting up the scanner. Scanners are all readily assembled, so installation is as simple as plugging in the lead. While not exactly tiny, the size is necessary - most scanners have to be big...

ScanJet - fast but inconsistent scans
Advantages: quick, decent software, good images after some repeats and fiddling
Disadvantages: inconsistent quality
...film, and one for 120 and 220 medium format and 4 x 5? film. To scan you remove the mat from the top cover to reveal the transparency adaptor, place the template on the flatbed, and put the film in the template which is foolproof
In the box you get: the HP ScanJet 4890 photo scanner, built-in slide and negative adapter and template kit, USB cable, power supply adapter/power cord, CDs with software and user instructions, setup poster, user's manual, warranty card
My experience.
A lot about this scanner is excellent but not everything. It is very quick to scan but doesn?t always recognise everything it should, for example when loading with 16 slides or 30 negatives it doesn?t always recognise and scan all of them, you either have to try and do it manually or you have to find the missed ones and reload them.
The thumbnail previews...

Very dissapointing for a scanner of this cost
Advantages: I cannot see any advantages with this product
Disadvantages: Software is convoluted and unreliable, paper jams are difficult to clear
...In summary:
* Very unintuitive, convoluted and unpleasant to use (same on Win2K as XP)
- sometimes the SW hangs during scan and needs a reboot
- sometimes the SW crashes with a dialogue "try reinstalling HP software", and needs a reboot
- sometimes it scans and after conversion to pdf every page is blank
- very occasionally it scans a document properly
*If the sheet-feeder jams is says to refer to the documentation to clear it, which doesn't exist. There is no way to clear the jam except to pull hard & hope. No levers to release it like one would expect.
*Frequently has error 23 (lamp failure) on power-up and needs to be power cycled to work again.
Everything has to be started by pressing a button on an application called "HP Director". There are 4 apps started from this:
1) Scan Picture
2) Scan Document
3) Make Copies
4...

HP Automatic Document Feeder
Advantages: saves time manual scanning
Disadvantages: a bit noisy and quite expensive
...This document feeder is a handy product which currently costs about GBP160 to buy. It is cheaper in the US at $199.
WHAT IS IT?
The HP Scanjet Automatic Document Feeder attaches to HP Scanjets and is compatible with the Scanjet 5100, 5200, 6200 and 6300 series scanners. It then scans documents automatically.
WHAT DOES IT DO?
You put up to 25 pages of loose paper in it and click a button. The loose pages will then be scanned into your computer. Wow! Now if you only scan one document a day, you might not want to shell out £160 for one of these, but if you do a lot of it, or pay someone to stand over a scanner and do it for you, the economics of this might start to make sense.
INSTALLATION:
Attaching it to your scanner is simple: you take the original lid of your scanner off by lifting it vertically and the docment...

HP Scanjet 3570 c
Advantages: Quality piece of hardware, scans negatives
Disadvantages: Lamp warm up time can be a bit slow.
...inserted into a special adapter to bring all those lost & damaged pics' back to life.
The 3570 c is a quality piece of kit, the first thing you'll notice is the shiney see through lid, with attractive blue pattern, the lid is heavy, as is the rest of the machine, ( for me , if something I buy weighs a fair bit , I recon It's worth it's money ? ) If you're going to spend £100 odd on your new toy ..... you want build quality. If it's too light it must be cheap? ( just add some lead weights to it ...and I'll buy it !! ).
Out of the box , you'll find .. the scanner comes with its own power supply, USB lead, and software set up CD. The CD provides the signed drivers, HP photo & imaging director. Once set up and connected, an icon is placed on the desk top for easy access to the scanner functions. This is in the form of the HP director...
