Super-VHS for a super picture

You might think that you have a 625 line TV, but in reality, you only get to see about 480 of them - the rest being used for other things like teletext. If you think that's bad, when playing a VHS tape, you’ll be lucky to see more than 280 visible lines! Somehow your eye can forgive a picture a lack of sharpness, as long as it's illuminated. S-VHS improves on the basic VHS to come up with about 400 lines, a considerable improvement, and not TOO far from the maximum viewable lines. Certainly a shortfall that the eye will more easily forgive. It therefore follows that S-VHS VCRs carry a price premium, both in the initial hardware and the price of the tapes. The JVC HR-S8700 gets round the second problem by allowing the use of ordinary tapes...

Bargain basement S-VHS

Advantages: Bargain price for S-VHS quality. Easy to set up. Host of features.
Disadvantages: Noisy playback motor

...The bargain was irresistible when I saw the highly specified JVC HR-S6700EK on sale for £300. And subsequently I've seen it being offered for under £250. Unfortunately, when I first tried it out, there was obviously something wrong with the playback quality. No matter how many settings I changed, it still gave a slightly "fuzzy" image. I still own a 10 year old JVC HR-S5000EK (which cost me £800 back then). Oddly, an S-VHS recording made on the new 6700EK played back reasonably sharply on the old 5000EK. I took the 6700EK back to Comet at Team valley, Gateshead, and explained my predicament. They exchanged it for another within 10 minutes. Excellent service! The replacement 6700EK works well. The last VCR you will buy

Advantages: Easy to set up and use, great features, great picture and sound.
Disadvantages: You'll have to hunt around a bit if you want to demo it before purchase.

...Just over a year ago I purchased an Akai VS-G2DPL VCR that I thought would be my last. It had received good product reviews and with the advent of recordable digital technologies I didn't envisage my shopping around for another VHS deck. I found that deck to be unreliable, and conceded earlier this year that it would need replacing. Having been spoilt by DVD but not being of a mind to spend £1000+ on Digital Recording Technologies currently available, my next purchase was going to have to be at least exceptional and I feel I found it. The JVC HR-S7700 ET Super VHS VCR. Super VHS decks have in the past been expensive and even though budget models have been about for a few years, the cost of the video tapes to take advantage of the superior resolution offered by Super VHS has been prohibitive.
