Homely Hull

Advantages: Very friendly city. Well planned
Disadvantages: Rather isolated

...Hull in Humberside was my home for five years whilst I did my undergraduate and graduate studies. I found this somewhat unfashionable city to be a very homely, friendly, much under-rated city. It is an exceptionally well planned city and has a nice mix of ultra-modern,offices and commercial buildings with attractive, historic buildings. It is also a city with fine parks and outstanding shopping. The maritime flavour of this historic port city has been enhanced with the construction of a magnificent marina. Then there is Queens'Gardens,a converted dock,in the city centre, which is a colourful, lovely, place for people to relax in. The city has a large number of lively pubs which ooze character and strangers always seem to be made welcome in this most welcoming of cities. The Old Town with streets such as "The Land of Green Ginger" is well worth...

THE BEST PLACE TO STAY IN THE HULL AREA?

Advantages: Clean and comfortable. Good Value For Money.
Disadvantages: Long Wet Walk From Check In to Lodge. View From Front Rooms

...WHY DID WE BOOK THE INNKEEPER'S LODGE - HULL? In this instance it was a purely business decision. The previous night we had stayed in the Innkeeper's Lodge at Chester (North East), the Hull Lodge was ideally situated for my business appointment at Brough. From previous experience we have found accommodation in Hull problematic, it is not a city exactly overflowing with a good choice of hotels and Bed and Breakfasts. We now use Innkeeper's Lodge's regularly in our travels and know that we can rely on the quality of the room and that the service offered is of a more than acceptable standard when compared to other lodge type hotels. HOTEL DESCRIPTION / OUR PERCEPTION FROM HOTEL PUBLICITY As with all of the Innkeeper's Lodges in which we have stayed, the Hull one is very well, and honestly, described, both in the new (2007...

Where dreams are made....and broken....Hull IVF Unit

Advantages: Wonderful, compassionate staff. Slightly above average success rates.
Disadvantages: Location. Lack of car parking.

...Having been through infertility, & subsequently IVF myself, I have read many other accounts relating to the journey of achieving something that most couples take for granted, but what at times can seem like the impossible ? a baby. I have gained so much insight from other people & have drawn strength from their stories, so I thought I would share mine & hopefully pass on some hope to other couples in similar situations. There are many IVF reviews on here, so I thought I would try & cover the hospital at which I myself received treatment (the Hull IVF unit). Since treatment can vary from hospital to hospital, I hope this will be of use to couples planning treatment here. Firstly, a bit of background information to set the scene? We began TTC (trying to conceive) back in September 2005. Although current guidelines state that...

Hull's not dull

Advantages: see text
Disadvantages: see text

...I've just completed my first year at the University of Hull after decided right at the last minute that I wanted to go to University. Right from the minute I phoned them to ask them if they had places, they were extremely friendly and unbelievably helpful - I received several phone calls from the languages department. On arriving at the Lawns (the main halls of residence), there were loads of people everywhere guiding you to get your key and then to your hall and block. Aside from the Lawns (about 3 miles from University), there is also the option of staying in student houses, the Taylor Court flats (right next to the University) and traditional halls. It costs around £60 a week to live at the Lawns, but that also includes evening meals every day and electricity/heating costs. Before you arrive at University you can choose if you...

"It's been a 'Hull's days night"....

Advantages: Cheap, cheerful, lots to do
Disadvantages: Hostile / Odd locals (at times)

..."Hull" ? "Where's Hull" ? "Why Hull?" they said when I announced my decision to go 'up North' (from Essex) to study. Many people who have never been to Hull are put off by it's image of being a depressive, boring and deprived fishing town. But there's more................. My time in Hull: I studied at for a BA (Honours) degree in Sociology at Hull University from September 1996 until June 1999 and graduated (feeling v pleased with myself) with a 2.1. However, I couldn't bring myself to leave and so stayed on and worked in the city until July 2000. How to get the University of Hull: By public transport- Before I could afford a car I travelled to Hull by train from London using GNER. The GNER service connects Hull to all the major cities and towns in the East Yorkshire area and to the south (London) and up as far North...

To Hull And Back With The Trotters

Advantages: Excellent episode with great comedy moments
Disadvantages: Poor production from the BBC

...First shown over the christmas of 1985, it's amazing to think that over twenty years have passed since Delboy and Rodders first graced the screen in this festive Only Fools and Horses special. The classic show has received many accolades since those early days, even grabbing the honour of the UK's most loved sitcom. "To Hull And Back" is vintage Fools, written to perfection by John Sullivan, the characters take to their roles like ducks to water. It's not difficult to see where the success stems from in Sullivan's work. The writing is clean and flows from scene to scene with great comical precision. Performances are immaculate and David Jason leads the ship with such screen presence that it really is difficult to think of anybody better suited to the job. But perhaps what seperates Only Fools from the rest of the bunch is its...

The Deep, Hull, East Yorkshire

Advantages: Interesting and lots of species to see
Disadvantages: If your not interested in fish,it might not be so much fun 4u!!!

...The Deep is based in Hull in Yorkshire right on the edge of the Humber Estuary. It opened in 2002 and is a charitable aquarium working towards raising public awareness of the threats to the fish, mammals and plants that live in the ocean and supports the marine conservation society. LOCATION Its in a great location for visiting the rest of the city as its only a five minute walk away from the city centre where there is lots of shopping to be done, some great cafes and pubs and there are also a handful of museums scattered around the town. A recently build pedestrian and cycle bridge was built at the side of the Deep which actually links the aquarium to the old quarter of the city. However if you dont fancy and are literally just visiting the city for The Deep there is a large car park right outside the building. The car park...

Hull - From a resident's view

Advantages: Plenty to do, Some nice accommodation, Good shops
Disadvantages: Not many restaurants to choose from, Some Hull residents, Public transport poor

...I live just outside Hull and so I am often in to go shopping and for days out. I will be completely honest with you, Hull would not be my first choice of holiday destination. However, it has plenty to offer for a day trip or weekend break. - ACCOMODATION - Hull has very limited accomodation with the highest being 3 star but there are a couple of nice places to stay in the area. The Holiday Inn Hull Marina has a range of pleasantly decorated guest rooms, a nice swimming pool and delicious restaurant serving a range of great modern cuisine. If on a day trip, the Holiday Inn serves a varying set lunch priced much cheaper than the evening. The lounge area needs a little refurbishment and is starting to look a liitle dated but this hotel set metres away from the boats and yahcts of the marina should give you a good night's sleep...

Hull is where the heart is

Advantages: Its cheap, the people are nice, there is loads to do and see.
Disadvantages: Uni students who come here give it a bad name then go home!

...Hull – for those of you out there who are unfamiliar with this place - I will give you a clue – It is a lesser known fishing village, sort of like a backwater because it is right at the end of the A63, one way in, and one way out! Actually this is not entirely true. Hull is not a fishing village; it is actually a city with 250,000+ residents. The city itself is about 15 miles across and 10 miles wide and there is 7 miles of dockland, including Britains largest Europoort for Ferries across to the continent. Villages such as Swanland, Melton, North Ferriby etc, hail from the west side and are very exclusive, but Hull itself is - A City! However, those throughout Britain who have never been to Hull, tend to have a few misconceptions about the place. Okay, friends at Uni.’ told me it smelled of fish, I think...

village hotel hull de vere group

Advantages: great leisure facilities, very clean rooms, easily found
Disadvantages: poor service, woeful security, casual, expensive, not disabled friendly

...the new village hotel hull was chosen as a yorkshire base for our weekend because it offered disabled facilities was central for our plans and seemed easy to find. i had high expectations of a de vere hotel. booking a disabled access room was a phone booking as usual and as always dearer. finding the hotel was not a problem so long as you realise its in an out of town industrial estate. strange but fine location for us. CHECK IN disabled parking was great and level access fine. reception was friendly if a little informal. however we werent offered any assistance with baggage needs so i struggled back for them myself later. the disabled/wheelchair user bedroom was strangely located for a new hotel. its on the second floor but all rooms were upstairs. unfortunately a big heavy corridor door had to negotiated to get to the room which...
