Forensic Holmes?
Advantages: Entertaining
Disadvantages: Not sure about Everett, weak story, set in the wrong period
...are no plans for him to appear as Holmes again - from my point of view, to do so would be a mistake.
My initial opinion of Ian Hart, who plays Dr Watson, was much the same. However, he did grow on me during the course of the film and I ended up really liking him. It is a tall order to play a character so well portrayed by Edward Hardwicke in the Jeremy Brett series, but he brought his own interpretation of the character into the role and I thought that it worked well. This Watson is much more competent, much more like Conan Doyle's Watson - in fact, at times, he carries Holmes rather than the other way around. I am not familiar with Ian Hart as an actor, but I will look out for him in the future.
I wasn't particularly impressed by any of the supporting actors. There is a rather strange addition to Holmes' team in the form of Mrs...

A very early Holmes adventure on the movie screen
Advantages: It is Sherlock Holmes!
Disadvantages: Dated and a bit theatrical
...been that no one would ever better his performances as Holmes.
For me though Rathbone will always be the actor, and image, that I associate with Holmes, even if Brett was much closer in look and attitude to the books version.
Wontner though does have the Holmes look about him, the angular facial characteristics and the tall gangly body that, going by the illustrations in the original Strand Magazine stories, looks exactly like Holmes.
He is also obviously an accomplished actor and has the gravitas that Holmes is associated with. He also manages to convey the moments when Holmes just seems to disappear from the real world and enter a different plane, one where his deductions and logic can flow far more easily helping him jump to an answer that at first seems crazy but turns out to be completely logical.
Dr Watson is played by Ian...

The Definitive Holmes and Watson
Advantages: Beautifully restored versions of the greatest Holmes and Watson of all time
Disadvantages: None a single one
....
That, to me, says it all.
For those inclined towards lists, below are the titles in the series - though this is not the order of production, but the order they appear on the DVDs: two per disc:
1. The hound of the Baskervilles
2. The voice of terror
3. The adventures of Sherlock Holmes
4. The secret weapon
5. Sherlock Holmes in Washington
6. Sherlock Holmes faces death
7. The spider woman
8. The pearl of death
9. The scarlet claw
10. The house of fear
11. Pursuit to Algiers
12. The woman in green
13. Terror by night
14. Dress to kill...

Holm House
Advantages: Outstanding luxury, outstanding food
Disadvantages: Price, no kids(but is that a disadvantage?)
...My wife and I stayed at Holm house in July 2008 for our wedding anniversary. It was a fantastic, long weekend of indulgence and luxury.
The emphasis is most definitely on quality. At roughly midnight on the evening before we arrived, I remembered that I hadn't ordered any flowers for my better half. An e-mail and 10 minutes later, and job done. A member of staff had returned my e-mail and informed me he would personally get some flowers when the florist opened in the morning.
Holm house is located in Marine Parade in Penarth. It's a quirky 12 room luxury spa/boutique, built in the 1920's with new found wealth. In fact most of the properties along Marine Parade look like they were built for the very wealthy. Everything is just so.
The owner, Susan Sessions was there to greet us as we arrived, and we were both impressed by...

The Flood by Ian Rankin
Advantages: Good story, enjoyable writing and exciting ending
Disadvantages: No epilogue
...Background
I'm sure most people have heard of this author Ian Rankin through the Rebus books and television series. This was however my first experience of his work.
About the Author
Ian Rankin was born in Fife, Scotland in 1960. He is the UK's Number 1 selling crime author. So far he has written 27 novels, of which his most successful have been the Rebus books. His first novel was indeed 'The Flood', which originally was planned for Radio 4's Short story section but was considered too long so Rankin converted it into a novel instead.
He has received many awards for his work including an OBE in 2002 for his services to literature.
The Storyline of the book
The book is set in a small Scottish town called Carsden. Whose traditional industry of coal mining was closing down due to it being uneconomic to mine there any...

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
Advantages: fast pace stories, lots of action and romance
Disadvantages: none
... The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
INTRO
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of twelve stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, featuring his famous detective. It follows the novel "The Sign of Four" (which I already reviewed) and it is the first work on Holmes which has been written in the form of short stories. From what I could gather online, I can tell you that they were originally published as single stories in the Strand Magazine from July 1891 to June 1892. The book was published in England on October 14, 1892 by George Newnes Ltd and in a US Edition on October 15 by Harper. The initial combined print run was 14,500 copies. The book was banned in the Soviet Union in 1929 for occultism, although the book shows few to no signs of such material. Later, the embargo was lifted...

FREE DVDs
Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review
...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them.
∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊
Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54
Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.
...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied.
On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

Tongue in cheek Holmes
Advantages: Gripping plot
Disadvantages: Some over-acting by Basil Rathbone
....... Mrs. Hilda Courtney, aka Mrs. Williams
Edmund Breon .... Julian 'Stinky' Emery
Frederick Worlock .... Colonel Cavanaugh
Carl Harbord .... Inspector Hopkins of Scotland Yard
Patricia Cameron .... Evelyn Clifford
Holmes Herbert .... Ebeneezer Crabtree, auctioneer at Gaylord Art Gallery
Harry Cording .... Hamid, Cavanaugh's chauffeur
Leyland Hodgson .... Tour guide
Mary Gordon .... Mrs. Hudson
Ian Wolfe .... Commissioner of Scotland Yard
Basil Rathbone was born in South Africa, but his family was forced to flee to the UK when his father was accused of being a spy just before the Boer War. After graduation, he wanted to move into acting, but his father disapproved and insisted that Basil worked for an insurance company for at least one year, hoping he would forget about acting. After one year, he left his job...

SHERLOCK HOLMES DOES LUNCH
Advantages: see review
Disadvantages: see review
...My recent stay in London was for several reasons, but not least to meet up with friends and enjoy a meal while exchanging Christmas presents. Not being a pub person, I was in two minds when the chosen destination was none other than a public house.
However upon entry into the Sherlock Holmes I decided it wasn?t too bad, there was hardly anyone in and we managed to get a table ? where we sat down with our pre-dinner drinks.
Our table was booked for 1 pm, and due to an error with a friend from Hull we ended up spending about four hours in the pub altogether, but that really is another story.
The restaurant in the pub is set upstairs, and caters for about 50 people at a guess. The restaurant has a very pleasant ambience, and is totally non intrusive.
The restaurant has a small part of the room sectioned off, in tribute to...
