IBM PC 300GL easy to upgrade

Advantages: Interchangeable processors
Disadvantages: Its a desktop

...The IBM PC 300GL was origionaly made for the business sector. The higher spec machine similar to the 300GL was the 300PL which some had AGP graphics and LAN comunications support. This was the lower spec of the two machines but still there wasn't alot of difference. If you wanted to have better graphics or LAN support you could fit a PCI graphics card or an extra LAN card. Many motherboards of this spec had at least 4 PCI slots and for this machine that was enough. Some machines were fitted with Celeron 233-333 processors and others were fitted with Pentium 2's or 3's. The higher Pentium 3 machines were the better becuase of the extra 256 or 512 L2 cache which made processing quicker. My origional machine had a Celeron 333 with 64mb ram fitted. The machine i then upgraded to a Pentium 3 which had 512 L2 cache and 384mb...

Review of IBM PC 300 GL 6275

IBM's "Premium" Flatpanels

Advantages: Flatpanel : take up little space. Great quality sound.
Disadvantages: Simplistic design, slightly flimsy. Lack of volume/treble/bass switches. Expensive.

IBM POWER PROCSSOR BOARD.

Advantages: CONFIGURES IN TWO WAYS.
Disadvantages: MIGHT BE COSTLY TO SOME.

...Well this actually awakens your pc by increasing the processing speed of your PC. My previous processor, which is Intel, has actually gone old so I needed some up grade. In terms of recommendations, I will highly recommend this to the fullest because of its processing speed and efficiency. Advantages: ease of use for people who have difficulty typing
Disadvantages: used in certain applications, may slow them down.

Having used the product for a month or so, I am very happy with its understanding and ability to be taught and re-taught voice recognition personal to the user. There are also several settings that can be adjusted to your own preferences, speed, accuracy etc. The main disadvantage I have encountered so far is that I am using windows XP and IE7, and if I choose to dictate directly into IE7, it does tend to slow the page down considerably. However, it is not necessary to type directly into IE as you have the ability to dictate into 'speak pad' , do your corrections etc and then transfer into the application of your choice...

IBM Trackpoint - the little red dot.

Advantages: Very neat little movements, and, for me at least, more control than a TouchPad
Disadvantages: Can make the tip of your finger sore during long sessions!

...When I first opened my Thinkpad, I was impressed, as you'd expect when opening your first laptop. However, when I came to try and move the cursor I was stumped. I looked all over the keypad, and couldn't find anything I recognised as a way to move the cursor. I had only ever used laptops with Touchpads (the little window you slide your figner over to move the cursor). Eventually (yes, shamefully it was a good 10-15 minutes), my brushed against the small red dot in the centre of the keyboard that I had mistaked for a microphone, or perhaps some device to stop the screen touching the keys when closed. The cursor moved! And so began my adventures with the IBM TrackPoint. At first it is a bit difficult to navigate with it. But after about and hour of use, I was happily playing slow-reaction games (Chicken Invaders, Kahuna Reef...

Review of IBM trackpoint cap

IBM 1401 - A surprise find and an excellent album

Advantages: Seamless transistion between tracks, great atmosphere and a good back story.
Disadvantages: The length, the second track doesn't stand well alone.

...I heard the fifth track of IBM 1401 - A Users Manual on Classic FM whilst channel hopping and demanded that the internet tell me more. I ordered the album and wasn't disappointed. The album starts with some classical strings and some synth effects, before going into a sample taken from a recorded manual for the old IBM 1401 computers. These beasts required their own room and where the super-computer of their day. The artist Johan Johansson's father used to maintain one in Iceland and it inspired Johan to make this piece, (apparently there is a dance to go with it but I've yet to find any videos of it on the internet). The album then moves on as if the computer has now, like the one from Johansson's childhood, been outdated and replaced. The sampled voice-over is replaced by haunting sorrowful cries, again to the classical strings...

Our First Computer

...Connecting it up: Even now I still remember it well after getting the enormous boxes into the house we tore them open ! It was pretty tricky to set up as we had never had a PC before and had no idea what to do. Luckily after reading the instructions a few times and many cups of tea we had figured it out. It wasn't that bad, just plug in the keyboard, mouse into the ports which were labelled just that. Next the monitor which plugged into the blue connector labelled monitor then the printer and scanner. Then plug it all in and off we went. It lives: After plugging it all in we flicked the switch on the back of the tower and away we went, swept into the digital age. After seeing the logo screen which read IBM Aptiva and setting the clock the desktop loaded, the PC was ready to take orders from its masters. The PC ran fluidly...

Review of IBM Aptiva 2139

Aptiva = IBM excellence

Advantages: Reliable
Disadvantages: Pricey

...I was lucky enough to ckoose an Aptiva as my home PC around four years ago. I say lucky because I had considered various other machines, but went for the Aptiva in the end. While not the cheapest, or even the highest spec machine that I had to choose from, I was finally convinced by the fact that it was an IBM machine. IBM are a massive company, and working in the computer industry I know the vast amounts of money that they spend on research and development. This has been money well spent when it comes to the Aptiva series. In my workplace I have had three new machines since I bought the Aptiva for home use. The Aptiva has outshone all three in terms of reliability. Because the machine is now four years old I have had to make a few small upgrades. I have added more memory and a bigger hard drive. I also upgraded the processor recently...

ASUS EEE PC 701 - Small but perfectly formed

...This review looks at one of many netbooks to be released in the UK over the past few months, ASUS's EEE PC 701 SD. The model I have is fitted with Windows XP and has an 8Gb hard drive. I bought it on special offer for £155. Appearance The 701SD is absolutely tiny. It weighs around a kilogram and is roughly the same size as a hardback reading book when in the closed position. It comes in a neat box along with instructions,a mains charger, a protective case and a system CD. It has a 7 inch screen which is absolutely tiny but is still perfectly functional. The unit has three USB sockets, headphone and microphone jacks, and SD memory card slot, a small webcam above the screen and a microphone positioned just underneath the keyboard. It has a small touchpad which is small but works in exactly yhte same way as a normal sized laptop...
