Reviews of ibm hard drive 300 gb
The IBM drive that lived to tell its tale
Review of IBM Deskstar 60GXP 40 GB by
blue.summer.sky
Advantages: Quite a fast drive.
Disadvantages: One of the "Deathstar" drives.
...complaining about their IBM drives dying. I even had a friend with a 60 GB model whose drive died after only a year. Possibly I'm lucky my drive hasn't died yet, but also there could be a reason for it....
These models of drive, marketed by IBM as "Deskstar", soon earnt the nickname "Deathstar" on many a website. With seemingly many people's replacement drives also dying and people generally getting very annoyed that IBM had turned out rather a dodgy lot of hard disks.
A year ago IBM released a firmware update that's supposed to fix the cause of the failures, which was to do with the way the hard drive head idled. The firmware fix simply moves the head around every now and again to prevent the problem (now my hard drive might have survived because it's accessing the disk so often). I'm sure a lot of people don't know there was a firmware update...

Otherwise known as Deskstar 75GXP 31Gb
Review of IBM Deskstar 75GXP 30 GB by
robertliu84
Advantages: Big, fast, fairly quiet. + CHEAP
Disadvantages: IDE?
...OK...This is a very large and cheap hard drive. What can I say but IBM have done a superb job with this set of hard drives. The Deskstar 75GXP series all run at 7200rpm via IDE connection, and I think capacities from 20Gb to 65Gb.
This 30Gb drive I'm reviewing here is an excellent upgrade. I upgraded from a 6Gb hard drive which had UDMA33 Connection, and a 5200rpm. Performance differences between my old drive and this IBM one is not dramatic but noticeable. For one thing it can make applications run a lot faster, and due to its higher rpm, it can process and save files slightly quicker.
What I am amazed about is the quietness of it, there is a noise as you turn it on, but after it has initiated it you cannot hear it spinning, unless your computer has no fans...even the power supply fan which is really quiet drowns out the sound...

Best 7200.10 hard drive but still not perfect
Review of Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320 GB by
neo1983
Advantages: Fast except multithread read, good capacity, stable, 5 years warranty
Disadvantages: Weak at multithread/multiple reads, a little noisy
...I've used a similar model for a long time and I have mixed opinions about 7200.10 hard drives.
The good things of Seagate Barracuda 7200.10
Seagate hdd are the most stables drives in the market, I've used my drive for quite a time and never experienced a single problem.
Large capacity, 320 GB is more than enough (300 Gb real)
Good speed, especially at writing data, but also at reading excepting multiple file copy. Speed is about 75-80 Mb at large files
The access time is about 13-14ms (about the same as other hdd)
Temperature IS OK.
Very stable and reliable
The not so good things:
Multitasking read performance. While on single thread the performance is high, 75 Mb, while increasing the threads, many aplications used the speed drops at about 5-10 Mb
A little noisy especially when many aplications are used
Conclusion. Good hard drive...

3.5 inch greased lightning
Review of IBM Deskstar 75GXP 30 GB by
Andy0468
Advantages: Speed, capacity, made by IBM!
Disadvantages: sometimes noisy
...IBM is a name that most people associate with Servers, or with desktop PC systems, but they are also one of the worlds biggest hard drive manufacurers. The Latest series of drives to roll off Big Blue's production line is the Deskstar 75GXP. Available in 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 gigabytes capacity, these drives all share in common a 7200rpm spindle speed, 2mb cache, and UDMA100 transfer speeds. These features all make for a drive that rivals a much more expensive SCSI drive in performance, but for a fraciton of the cost.
I have 2 of the 75GXP 30gb drives in my AMD Athlon system as we speak, and they're set up in a RAID array. The upshot of all the jargon is that the 2 drives act as one big drive, and effectively double the already impressive performance! Even using just a single drive, they are the perfect companion for the latest high...

Fantastic specs, but...
Review of IBM Deskstar 75GXP 30 GB by
Stalin
Advantages: Performance, reliability, price
Disadvantages: Can be hard to set up, noisy
...This drive has an excellent spec. 2MB Buffer, 7200RPM, UDMA100 and 8.5 sec access speed, which is the fastest I have seen of an IDE drive! On top of this, it is also one of the cheaper drives available. However, I must warn you of a couple of niggles I have with this product.
First, while simply spinning it is very quiet. However when it is being accessed it is rather more noisy. My ancient Fujitsu 6.4G was quieter, and most other modern drives are quieter still. Second, the jumper settings are rather hard to understand. If you plan on using this drive as a master, don't worry, because it is set to this by default. However, if you wish to use it as a slave, then good luck! I could only get it to work as a slave on the secondary IDE channel, which is pretty useless. The "cable select" setting, which is supposed to choose the master...

Internal 80 GB Hard drive.
Review of Acer Hard drive 80 GB by
yassarikhan786
Advantages: Quick transfer speed,
Disadvantages: Fairly Bulky
...What can i say this is an internal had-drive which obviously integrates within a computer system. Nowadays 80GB is not enough for anyone as programs are now increasing in size due to their complexity and what they have to offer.
A hard drive is a non-volatile storage device which stores digitally encoded data on rapidly rotating platters with magnetic surfaces. Non-volatile storage is simply the name given to a storage device which can retain stored data even when not powered. With a volatile storage device being one that can not retain saved data e.g. RAM (Random Access Memory).
I used to have an 80 GB hard drive in the past on my "OLD" PC, which was about 5 years ago. Now i have a 300 GB hard drive which i have to admit is filling up really quickly. Due to the number of files stored e.g music, photo, video etc.
This particular hard...

An Oldie but a Goodie
Review of IBM Deskstar 75GXP 60 GB by
Weltmeister
Advantages: Fast; High performance
Disadvantages: Known reliability issues
...IBM's Deskstar range of hard disks is well known in the IT industry as one of the best, but not always the cheapest - you pay a premium price for a premium product. I bought the 75 GXP as a replacement for a failed Seagate 40 GB drive.
If you need a fast drive, but don't want to fork out for SCSI, this IDE drive should have what you need - it spins at 7,200 rpm, in comparison with many cheaper drives which can only manage 5,400 rpm. This makes a big difference if you use your computer for games or video editing.
I bought the OEM version of the drive, so I can't include any details on the quality of the manual or any accessories included in the retail version. Of course, if you don't need the cables and other superfluous junk that comes packaged in the retail version, you can save yourself around £10 to £20 by buying the OEM version...

Samsung 40gb hard drive
Review of Samsung SpinPoint SP4002H 40 GB by
Rabid
Advantages: Fast and silent
Disadvantages: None
...7 weeks ago i had an IBM hard drive die on me whilst my PC was booting up, it made lots of clicking sounds and failed to load into windows, trying to keep my temper i rushed down to my local PC world to see what i could pick up as i didnt want to be without my PC for more than a few hours.
I decided upon buying the Samsung 40gb as it matched the spec of my previous IBM perfectly and my old hard drive was fine for what i needed it for until it packed up somewhat prematurely.
The main spec of the Samsung is as follows...
40 gig storage space
7200 RPM
8.9 ms seek time
UDMA/ATA 100
2mb buffer
It also came with 2 features that my old IBM didnt...
Noiseguard
Impacguard
The noise guard reduces noise output from the drive (makes it quieter) and impac guard means the hard drive is less susceptable to being damaged if accidentally banged...

Maxtor External Hard drive, a professionals opion.
Review of Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB by
TheEvilNastyMan
Advantages: One touch backups, transfereable from computer to computer, more reliable than tapes
Disadvantages: bulky, installing on non-Windows XP computers, takes a long time to backup
...Upon hearing the familar metal-on-metal grinding noise from inside the computer's cases, meaning one thing, you're hard drive is going to die very soon.
Luckly, the good people at Maxtor have given us the 'Once touch external hard disk'.
The device itself is a self contained 300 GB 7200 RPM Maxtor Hard drive with a USB 2.0 ( 480 Mbs) or Firewire (400 Mbs) interface although the maxium data transfer speeds are 41 MB/s for the Firewire version and 34 MB/s for USB.
Personally I think that 300 GB is a bit excessive for home computer purposes, and I would recommend the smaller 200 GB version availible.
For office, work , and corperate use it is ideal. I now recommend the use of this device as a direct replacement for tape drives, when it comes to backing up servers.
The 'One touch backup feature' makes backing up important data so much...
