M-Audio Fast Track Pro - Great for working with audio on a budget

Advantages: cheap, reliable, portable, easy to use and intuitive
Disadvantages: limited ins and outs, not a lot of leeway for input levels

...The M-Audio Fast Track Pro is all round a fairly good piece of kit. I originally bought mine as my very first audio/usb interface to use with my Macbook and Logic Pro when I first started university, 2 years ago. I am now in my final year, and have progressed up to using Pro Tools (M-powered, as this is the only version supported by the Fast Track Pro.) I have to date used the fast track pro to create semi-professional projects. The sound quality is, I have to say, very good for a £120 interface, although I have had problems attempting to get a decent input signal strength, especially when using the built in phantom power. However, the integrated phantom power is effective, even when the unit is powered solely by USB, although the option for mains power is available, though the adapter is not included in the box. ...the I needed to go away and get a VGA cable to hook it up and that's what I did. Since I have alot of things around my TV (lots of computers things and electricity) I didnt want any sort of crosstalk (disturbance on the cable from other electrical devices- its quite rare now but not unheard of) I made sure that i got a double shielded wire, the best one of these that i could find was the Belkin PRO series. This basically means that it has 2x the amount of protective sheath around the cable so that nothing can get through and distort the signal. Belkin are one of the leaders in computer products, they make everything from routers to cables and I have a few of their products and they have never gone wrong for me, so I trust them and their products. IBM Trackpoint - the little red dot.

Advantages: Very neat little movements, and, for me at least, more control than a TouchPad
Disadvantages: Can make the tip of your finger sore during long sessions!

...still think the IBM TrackPoint is a fantastic controller. I'm using the classic 'sandpaper' type, which probably goes some way to explaining my callous! However, those who don't appreciate hardened skin, can still use the Trackpoint, as different little red buttons are availible readily in shops as mainstream as PCWorld. There is one which is raised like the classic type, but rubber, with tiny rubber nodules for traction, and another which is also rubber, but which is concave, to hold your fingertip in place. Both those alternative sound great, though I haven't tried them.... yet! Another great point about the TrackPoint, is that if it gets old, worn, dirty, it can be easily repaced by just poping it out, and slotting a new little red button in it's place.
