The Ultrium-ate Review
Review of Fujifilm LTO Ultrium 200 GB by
Calldean
Advantages: Fast
Disadvantages: Cost
...edge LTO tapes have a small spring loaded "door" at the side through which the tape is dispensed into the drive. So unlike your videos, which spool from one side to the other, this is spun out in one long line and then rewound. I could be totally wrong but Fuji and the other manufacturers are a little obscure on this!
Enough of that anyway; what do you do with them?
You copy your ever so precious data onto it. Now I'm willing to bet a penny to an LTO drive that your data isn't worth £3000+. Nope, didn't think so.
But for business it is. Frequently it's worth a lot more than that.
Your average home user will NEVER need this much storage capacity. Each tape has a native (I.E. Uncompressed) capacity of 200GB. Most home PCs don't even have hard drives that big. Compress the data and you can get a theoretical capacity of 400GB. More...

An Oldie but a Goodie
Review of IBM Deskstar 75GXP 60 GB by
Weltmeister
Advantages: Fast; High performance
Disadvantages: Known reliability issues
...IBM's Deskstar range of hard disks is well known in the IT industry as one of the best, but not always the cheapest - you pay a premium price for a premium product. I bought the 75 GXP as a replacement for a failed Seagate 40 GB drive.
If you need a fast drive, but don't want to fork out for SCSI, this IDE drive should have what you need - it spins at 7,200 rpm, in comparison with many cheaper drives which can only manage 5,400 rpm. This makes a big difference if you use your computer for games or video editing.
I bought the OEM version of the drive, so I can't include any details on the quality of the manual or any accessories included in the retail version. Of course, if you don't need the cables and other superfluous junk that comes packaged in the retail version, you can save yourself around £10 to £20 by buying the OEM version...

The IBM drive that lived to tell its tale
Review of IBM Deskstar 60GXP 40 GB by
blue.summer.sky
Advantages: Quite a fast drive.
Disadvantages: One of the "Deathstar" drives.
...Whether you are thinking of buying this drive (2nd hand, most likely as it's a couple of years old) or own one of IBM's 60GXP, 75GXP or 120GXP models, read on for important information about issues with these drives and fixing them.
** THE DRIVE **
Capacity: 40 GB (38.3 GB as reported in windows)
Rotational Speed: 7200 RPM
Interface: ATA-100
Average seek time: 8.5 ms
It's a fast enough drive. It seems to perform quite a bit better than the 5400 rpm 45 GB Western Digital drive I had, it's quite a bit quieter and this one's not dead ... yet.
** BORROWING NAMES FROM STAR WARS **
The main reason I thought I'd write a review on this drive, is to hopefully help a few others who have this or one of the other 60GXP, 75GXP or 120GXP models (as I've read these are equally affected).
It didn't take long for a lot of people to start...

For Business purpose
Review of ThinkPad R50 1829 - Pentium M 1.5 GHz - 15" TFT by
waiho
Advantages: Stable
Disadvantages: Heavy
...I have been setup 30 piece of IBM R50 thinkpad for a new company. Basically what happen is I encounter IBM have thier own software install when the brand new R50 delivery to the customer. The most rediculors things is the IBM software use up 3 GB space which not inluded the Operating system. Which mean this R50 come with 40GB harddrive, user only will have 30GB to use, the rest is software usage.
Come to the point of hardware issue. This product come with centrino 1.5 and built-in WIFI.
Everything is solid look and reliable.
Boot up is not as fast as what you think after all the personal software installation which use for startup program. Make you feel like not a 1.5 centrino product.
I do not advice home user getting this laptop is because you will get bored of the look. If you insist to get a IBM. I would advice you to get a T41p...

375GBP Big Brand Budget Bargain
Review of IBM NetVista A40i 2284 - Duron 600 MHz by
opinion-maker
Advantages: IBM reputation, support, quality, Duron CPU, 200Mhz motherboard, 4X AGP slot, software package
Disadvantages: No matter how much you dislike to be seen in Comet, I think they are the only ones selling it. No paper manuals
...usually only runs on a 66Mhz board and is more or less the same thing as an AMD Thunderbird but with less cache.
It comes with Via KT-133 chipset motherboard (same as used on Athlon Thunderbird systems!) that has a 200 Mhz front side bus, UDMA66 controller, 64Mb of PC 133 RAM, 10 Gb hard disk (5600 rpm), and unusually for a 'budget' machine it has a SEPARATE 4X AGP slot which houses a Diamond Stealth S3 Savage4 8Mb card, (none of this onboard video business which shares it's video memory with the main memory, - this slows a system up).
Other components are a 56k modem, 48x CD, 3 RAM slots, 3 PCI and 4 USB ports. Then it's the usual VGA, printer, games, speaker, mic ports. The speakers look and sound reasonable too, though lack a bit of bass.
The keyboard is internet enabled and has programmable buttons for one touch access to your favourite...

Otherwise known as Deskstar 75GXP 31Gb
Review of IBM Deskstar 75GXP 30 GB by
robertliu84
Advantages: Big, fast, fairly quiet. + CHEAP
Disadvantages: IDE?
...OK...This is a very large and cheap hard drive. What can I say but IBM have done a superb job with this set of hard drives. The Deskstar 75GXP series all run at 7200rpm via IDE connection, and I think capacities from 20Gb to 65Gb.
This 30Gb drive I'm reviewing here is an excellent upgrade. I upgraded from a 6Gb hard drive which had UDMA33 Connection, and a 5200rpm. Performance differences between my old drive and this IBM one is not dramatic but noticeable. For one thing it can make applications run a lot faster, and due to its higher rpm, it can process and save files slightly quicker.
What I am amazed about is the quietness of it, there is a noise as you turn it on, but after it has initiated it you cannot hear it spinning, unless your computer has no fans...even the power supply fan which is really quiet drowns out the sound...

Value for Money
Review of Multivision Computers (Shop) by
murban
Advantages: Feature packed, good value for money, good performance is budget systems.
Disadvantages: Performance lags at higher specs, graphics card scores could be better
...Multivision Computers are a fairly new computer company that specialises in the sub £2000 desktop range. Their prices are affordable, their spec is good and they've won many many awards.
COMPONENTS
You'd think that cheap computers would have slower, cheaper components - but multivision is an exception. My systems speck was 1.2GHz, 256MB RAM, 40GB HD and so on. All three of theese were the highest quality you'd expect. The RAM clocked at 133MHz and supported CAS2 - the faster type of memory). The problem with this is that Multivision forgot to change the settings in the BIOS, so you have to change that before you can reap the advantages. The 40GB IBM hard drvie ran at 7,200 RPM and was connected to an EIDE slot capable of ATA100. Overall all components were of top quality.
SUPPORT
I suppose it was a one off, but my computer was faulty...

Ups My Capacity, and Up Yours Too
Review of IBM Microdrive by
BNibbles
Advantages: Cheaper than large CompactFlash modules
Disadvantages: Heavier camera battery drain
...these drives are designed to be “bunged in the same ‘ole” as Compact Flash II (CF II) modules, one of the front-runners in digital picture storage, the "film" of digital cameras.
This makes them immediately useful to most people whose kit is intended for CF II memory chips. There are one or two exceptions, and it’s best to check that yours actually SAYS it’s configured for the IBM’s as well as CF II.
Of course, it’s not just digital cameras that can now benefit from the serious capacity afforded by Microdrives. Some Palmtops and PDA’s are now using them, as is my MP3 player.
THE COMPETITION
Currently, nothing else comes close to the 1.0 Gigabyte model, although I note that 512 Megabyte CF II chips can now be got. Price-wise, not a lot comes close though, since the BIG CF II chips are pretty expensive in a “pence per Megabyte” kind of way...

The IBM ThinkPad 240 - A sub-£200 gem?
Review of ThinkPad 240 C 300 MHz - 10.4" TFT by
mattyprice4004
Advantages: Small size, Lights, Looks smart!
Disadvantages: Some say it looks bland, Small size limits functionality
...Watching the ICT market depresses me. Only a couple of short years ago I invested in the biggest desktop hard disk drive I could ever find - A roomy 120GB Seagate. Now we are up to 750GB, yet these cost only half of what I paid for my drive.
The same is the story with the ThinkPad 240 - I remember when these were £1,699 brand new. Luckily I never bought one new, but I did receive one second hand a few months ago.
This is probably my first review where I have a few serious issues with a product, as the 240 did leave a lot to be desired.
But let's start with what's good. The first thing that will attract a lot of potential buyers to this laptop is it's diminutive size. It truly is amazing how IBM have managed to squeeze a full laptop into such a small case. The screen has a resolution of 800x600 pixels, which is enough for office work...

3.5 inch greased lightning
Review of IBM Deskstar 75GXP 30 GB by
Andy0468
Advantages: Speed, capacity, made by IBM!
Disadvantages: sometimes noisy
...IBM is a name that most people associate with Servers, or with desktop PC systems, but they are also one of the worlds biggest hard drive manufacurers. The Latest series of drives to roll off Big Blue's production line is the Deskstar 75GXP. Available in 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 gigabytes capacity, these drives all share in common a 7200rpm spindle speed, 2mb cache, and UDMA100 transfer speeds. These features all make for a drive that rivals a much more expensive SCSI drive in performance, but for a fraciton of the cost.
I have 2 of the 75GXP 30gb drives in my AMD Athlon system as we speak, and they're set up in a RAID array. The upshot of all the jargon is that the 2 drives act as one big drive, and effectively double the already impressive performance! Even using just a single drive, they are the perfect companion for the latest high...
