Think Thinkpad

Advantages: Speedy, Robust, Good graphics card, Connectivity
Disadvantages: Not the prettiest of designs, Annoying keyboard layout w/ no Windows key and Fn/Ctrl key placement

...INTRODUCTION I bought myself a used IBM / Lenovo Thinkpad T41 for £129 and although it's a pretty old machine (probably from 2004) and fairly low spec by today's standards, I still feel it was a bargain. This was from Cash Converters. DESIGN The machine, like all IBM (now made by Lenovo) notebooks are intended for business users and so the design is not particularly sleek but instead, have a very 'professional' look to them. They all seem to be black with a little bit of red on the button and either a red or blue knob for controlling the mouse pointer. The IBM ThinkPad 240 - A sub-£200 gem?

IBM Thinkpad X30 Pentium 3 1.2 ghz USED.

Advantages: Small, light and well spec'd
Disadvantages: Replacement parts prices.

...I originally bought my Thinkpad as a starter for my partner as she reckoned they are easier to use. My reason was that it was small enough to put out of the way if she never used it. I bought it off E-Bay and apart from a small amount of worry with the screen getting damaged in transit paid £200 plus postage. It arrived well packaged and undamaged and to my surprise looking very good for an older model laptop. HARD DRIVE It came pre-installed with Windows XP Pro as it would have when new, and booted up quickly and very quietly. The 40gb hard disk is quite ample as it gives you plenty of space to install whatever anti-virus you require and enough space for applications for the average user. At the moment on this one I have a few of my favourite cds, some games, office 2007 and Photoshop 8, yet still have 20gb hard disk...

IBM POWER PROCSSOR BOARD.

In terms of recommendations, I will highly recommend this to the fullest because of its processing speed and efficiency. With the 2-way 1.65ghz processor with a 36mb l cache, the processor board is capable of processing perfectly and all right so this is a good alternative if you actually want to upgrade your PC. IBM Trackpoint - the little red dot.

Advantages: Very neat little movements, and, for me at least, more control than a TouchPad
Disadvantages: Can make the tip of your finger sore during long sessions!

...When I first opened my Thinkpad, I was impressed, as you'd expect when opening your first laptop. However, when I came to try and move the cursor I was stumped. I looked all over the keypad, and couldn't find anything I recognised as a way to move the cursor. I had only ever used laptops with Touchpads (the little window you slide your figner over to move the cursor). Eventually (yes, shamefully it was a good 10-15 minutes), my brushed against the small red dot in the centre of the keyboard that I had mistaked for a microphone, or perhaps some device to stop the screen touching the keys when closed. ...personal laptop - several microsoft office programs, 2 PC games, and the usual bits and pieces and it runs fine. The one thing that concerns me is the heat of the laptop once it has been on for a long while. The battery area does get very warm. Other than that, if you want a good laptop for personal use forget some of the well known brand laptops described as perfect for home use and buy a "small business" laptop - an IBM Thinkpad!...
