Ice Hockey

Advantages: We earn the money, great fun to watch
Disadvantages: Might be a bit violent for the squeamish!!!!

...How come that Ice hockey is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK but there was no subject for it here?? Well I have started one. I dont understand mentality of Ice Rink owners in the UK. Ice Hockey is the money spinner with the "super rinks" springing up all over the UK, yet, Figure skating is the preferred sport in many. They get all of the best ice time to dance and jump and fall over yet we are restricted to unsociable hours late at night. It upsets me because Hockey brings the crowds in. Hockey earns the Ice rinks money yet it is these same people that sacrifice the rink in favour of the figure skaters. Does anyone else feel the same way about hockey and our supression by Figure blades???...

My GRAF Skates have finally lost out to a newcomer to the skate market. Easton. Easton used to make skates many moons ago but drifted away and into Sticks only. Ice is for Drinks, not Hockey

Telling people I play hockey and being asked “Oh, do you skate”, or “you mean ice hockey?” or “Isn’t that dangerous, all that shoulder charging and stuff?” No, no, NO! Why, in a country that is regularly skated all over by the greatest ice hockey teams in the world, yet held an Olympic Medal in “field” hockey (I hate having to specify the “field” bit, too!), does ice spring to peoples minds whenever you mention hockey. Yes, the Sekonda Superleague is more popular than hockey’s National League, and gets a lot more coverage, but “my” hockey is more fun, easier and cheaper to play, requires less equipment and is far less dangerous! Ice Hockey in Great Britain

Advantages: none
Disadvantages: Lack of rinks and ice time available

...I agree with Andy's opinion on Ice Hockey as a sport in Great Britain. The Ice rinks is this county have no reality link with the supporters and players of Ice Hockey who could if dealt with correctly could make them alot of money. Being a player myself I feel that Ice Hockey is a sport for both men and women of all ages, at every level. The sport is reportly the fastest growing sport in the country , yet the Newspapers and Television fail to report on the Fixtures and game results. There are some Teams in the Superleague that are bigger than some football teams , but get less coverage. How do we expect the National team to succeed if we the suppporters and players have no idea when they play in competions as we have no way of supporting them....

Ice ice hockey!!

Advantages: exciting, friendly atmosphere, reasonable ticket prices
Disadvantages: blink and you'll miss it

...I can;t believe so many people are still ignorant of the fasted growing indoor sport in the world! More people attend ice hockey matches than attend some kinds of rugby and other such well publicised sports!! Manchester, Sheffield, London, Cardiff, Belfast, Ayr, Newcastle, Nottingham and Bracknell all have Superleague teams that are on a par with the top levels of the sport played all over Europe and north America. Its fast, its intense and its exciting. If your thinking right now that its all big ugly men punching each others teeth out then you are quite simply just ignorant and wrong. Its a game of speed and finesse, as well as being a contact sport. I would recommend to anyone who wants can take a bit of excitement, in a friendly,family environment to give it a go and just see what you've been missing....

The Dr. Pepper Of Sports - Hockey.

Advantages: Keeps you fit and healthy, a very competitive game.
Disadvantages: People get the wrong impression and then do not take it up.

...I am a relative hockey beginner, I only started playing seriously in September last year. Since then it has grown into my favourite sport to play, I simply love it, you can't not. I began hockey when I was still in school, I played it for P.E and was in the school mixed-hockey team. But after a while, after relentless taunts aimed at me that hockey is for girls, I decided to quit playing. I never really understood those comments, hockey is in fact one of the most competitive sports around. I soon joined college and still had not picked up a stick since Year 10. Then I discovered that some of friends played, I now wouldn't be mocked. It didn't take much convincing for me to join the local hockey club, which people I knew and liked were part of. Soon I was once again a hockey player! Hockey is a relatively simple game to play...

Hockey - my passion

Advantages: Great ffor fitness, fun, socializing
Disadvantages: Equipment expensive, alcohol consumption can be high

...This is a review of my personal experience of the wonderful sport of hockey ? not really a technical review of the laws of the game! I may get around to that another time. I am retired now due to family commitments - 2 children and an unco-operative husband. Ah well I have lots of fantastic memories of my 21 years of playing hockey. I only played for one club - Sherwood (who were one of the top clubs in the country), sadly no longer in existence as they have merged with our once great rivals Crimson Ramblers and are now called Highfields and play at the Hockey Centre in Nottingham. Hockey is quite a technical game and you have to know the rules to play - unlike football. Very basically, it is a game of 11 a-side and played on a pitch slightly smaller than a football pitch. Now most games are played on synthetic surfaces...

The great and painful sport that is hockey!!

Advantages: A great sport to play, really exciting and enjoyable
Disadvantages: Injuries do sometimes occur, and they are usually painful, some equipment expensive

And I have to admit it, before I started playing, I used to think the same. I couldn't see the attraction of running around with a funny shaped stick trying to hit a solid ball. I used to think that it had to be much harder than football, because the goals are smaller to score in, the ball is smaller to hit, and you can't use your feet at all. A Breakdown of the NHL.

Advantages: Great team sport
Disadvantages: none

...a great replacement for one time superstar Jeremy Roenick. The Goalie Jocelyn Thibault, is a good shot stopper but not a great. Another great is Bob Probert. One time most feared goon in Hockey, he is now just a pure fighter put on the ice to stop people. Great stuff. Michael Nylander is another great forward with an eye for goal. Not doing too badly this year. ST LOUIS BLUES -------------- In Saint Louis they have another good team. Chris Pronger is a brilliant Defenceman but he is out injured at the moment making the Blues weaker at the back. Pavol Dimitra is one of the best forwards in the game and makes a great line with Scott Mellanby and Pierre Turgeon. Roman Turek is another great goaltender and is an All Star Keeper. Expect to see them in the playoff but not much more than first round. DETROIT RED WINGS...

The icing on the cake

Advantages: sweet, attractive, adaptable

...When I was younger my grandma and I always used to bake cakes at the weekend. My favourites were the Coffee cake or the Marble cake. We always seemed to make large, share sized cakes fitted for all, but never little fairy cakes or little cup cakes. Though now when I get the urge to bake on my own, I tend to make little single sized cakes which are fine for dishing out. To ice them, I always use Silver Spoon icing sugar, as I do feel it is the best around! Packaging: The icing sugar comes in a cardboard box. One thing that attracts me to it is its pretty pink colour - it may be sexist but I do think this is aimed at females more so. On the front there is a big spoon image, hence the name! When you open it up you will find a little cardboard style bag. Opening this a puff of white powder will come out so you need to be careful. It is...
