Il Postino (1994)
Director: Michael Radford
Stars: Philippe Noiret, Massimo Troisi, Maria Grazia Cucinotta
Not to be confused with the wholly inferior Kevin Costner vehicle with the same name (Il Postino means "The Postman" - US title), this charming Italian language film won an Academy Award for Original Music Score and was nominated for five other awards including Best Director, Best Actor (Massimo Troisi) and Best Picture.
The film is based on an adaptation of a Spanish language novel, Ardiente Paciencia by Antonio Skarmeta and is based partly on real life events that happened to the 1971 Nobel Prize for Literature winning poet, Pablo Neruda. Neruda (1904-1973), known as el poeta del amor (the poet of love), famed for his beautiful love poetry, and was also famous for his political poetry and activism...

Review of Il Postino (DVD)
Advantages: Fantastic album,no "bad" songs, excellent voices Disadvantages: None if you like the combination opera-pop
...My wife was going on and on about how wonderful this new group-IL DIVO- are in their video clip on Classic FM TV so I logon to 101cd.co.uk and ordered it for her, the day that their cd was released.(1st of November).
(£8.95. They accept paypal.)
5th of November and the cd still not with us.
This afternoon I had to go for some shopping to the local Asda and as I pass from the cd section I saw their cd so I decided to buy it there and then (with £9.77) and surprise my wife. I thought I could cancel my order as after 5 days I think their service there in 101cd.co.uk is really slow.
I picked my wife with the car. I had the first track on the cd player. She was really happy and she was quiet all the way home listening to them. 7 hours later, the cd is still playing in the house non stop. We prepare our meal, listening to it, we...

Review of Il Divo - Il Divo
Advantages: Stunning voices, great atmosphere, brilliant songs Disadvantages: perhaps there could have been more tracks
...This live performance was filmed in Spain at Teatro Romanao De Merida and followed the globally successful album 'Ancora'. The DVD is part concert and part documentary with a couple of videos 'Regresa a Mi and the wonderful 'Mamma' thrown in as well.
Il Divo comprise of four singers, a baritone (Carlos), two tenors (Urs and David) and a vox populi (Steven). Together they blend perfectly to make magical music. They have been dubbed 'popera' but that is unfair in my opinion even if they have through their unique talents helped popuarise opera. To bring a much derided genre of music to the masses can only be a good thing and I speak as someone who enjoys music from classical to metal. A true music lover will have eclectic tastes.
The live performance features 5 tracks 'Si Tu Me Amas', 'Isabel', 'O Holy Night...
Advantages: It is out of this world Disadvantages: hard to find information on it
...When starting to write a review, I do like to find some background information and this morning I have spent ages well actually over an hour trying to find out more information on this product and it certainly did present me with a challenge.
Whilst doing a bit of top up shopping yesterday, I went into our local freezer shop, not a high street branded one, just one of the many that you will find in a market selling food at low cost prices, maybe they come from a foreign country and have been labelled by a british firm so you have a little understanding of what you are eating.
Well Mr Bubbles yesterday said he wanted a dessert with his dinner so when I walked out of the shop there was this large advert IL Tizio Ice Cream, BOGOF, not one to leave a bargain on the shelf, I went back in and bought them.
They were very cheap as well...
Advantages: Rich, powerful and seductive voices Disadvantages: You have to be in the right mood - romantic
...There is nothing new about manufactured bands. The Monkees were criticized from their debut in 1966 onwards for the fact they were assembled purposefully for the television show. Over the past few years there has been an influx in the manufacture of bands with the introduction of pop idol, ex-factor and pop stars.
Il Divo is a manufactured boy band with a slight difference. Their introduction as a new international operatic vocal group did little to raise public interest. Yet Il Divo ?s debut on Parkinson, 18th September 2004, singing their newly released single ?Regressa Mi?, hit the British music market by storm (including me): the album, released by S Records on 1st November 2004, selling 130,00 copies in its first week, knocking Robbie Williams off the number one slot.
So who are and what is Il Divo?
A Vocal Group...

Review of Il Divo - Il Divo
Advantages: easy on the ears as well as the eyes Disadvantages: some lyrics impossibly corny
...**NOTE: This was actually one of my first reviews, then I added one line, clicked the wrong box, and now it appears smack bang at the top of my review list. So now I have had to improve it otherwise I'll keep getting SH ratings! If you look at my other Il Divo review (or any more recent ones), I get better! Thank you**
I saw 'Il Divo' before I heard them, so was probably biased into liking their music - they are nice boys - but even so, they sound fantastic together. In fact, I taped the whole of 'Miss World' to catch them singing in the middle (then got caught up watching MW instead, it's hilarious, kept expecting Sandra Bullock to come on stage). But I digress...
~ Who are they~
Il Divo are Carlos (Spanish), Urs (Swiss), Sebastien (French) and David (American). They were put together by the infamous Simon Cowell who apparently...

Review of Il Divo - Il Divo
Advantages: Stunning vocals, superb orchestral score Disadvantages: If you like to sing along, then you will need to brush up on your Italian and Spanish!
...The origins of Il Divo
The origins of Il Divo (meaning devine male performer in Italian) is unique. The group were formed by the pop Mogul, Simon Cowell, who decided to assemble a classical group after listening to a duet by Andrea Boticelli and Sarah Brightman. After a two year world wide search, Urs Toni Buhler (Swiss), Carlos Marin (Spanish), Sebastien Izambard (French) and David Miller (American) were named as the successful artists and Il Divo was born.
Artists' biographies
David had been performing in leading operatic roles for the last 10 years starring in Broadway productions of La Boheme. He holds a Masters degree in Operatic theatre.
Sebastien, is a self-taught singer and songwriter who plays guitar and piano.
Urs, who started singing with a hard rock band, and has also performed with the Netherlands opera...
Advantages: Close to the sea and bus terminals, friendly staff, lovely rooftop, clean rooms. Disadvantages: Slightly old fashioned, on top of a hill, not many facilities in the hotel.
...** Introduction **
A few months ago I had one of the best experiences of my life. I went on holiday to Malta! So what? A lot of people might say. Well the 'So what?' is that it was my first holiday abroad. (Gasp!) Yes, it was the first time on a plane and the first time in real sunshine! It took 23 years, but I got there! I don't know what took me so long now I think about it. The fact my parents have never been abroad is probably a big factor, but at the same time it gave me the inspiration to want to experience new things. Now I most definitely have the travel bug! I travelled in early August last year (2008) but I must say, considering we were novices, the hotel we picked wasn't bad at all. Here is my review of the Il Palazzin Hotel, Malta.
I have also added pictures so you can have a look for yourself!
** Malta...
Advantages: Great cinematography, tension that doesnt let up, curious throughout about the intruder Disadvantages: Useless first scene, perhaps slightly limited acting ability by Clem/Lucas.
...Continuing my French horror film phase, I decided to check out Ils, based on a recommendation of a friend. And what a heck of a recommendation it was!
The film opens up with a mother with her daughter, having something short of an argument and loses her distraction in the heat of the moment, she crashes into a tree. The mother disappears and the daughter is attacked in the car. We aren't told the outcome of the two women, it is left to our own speculation. It quickly focusses on a teacher called Clementine who comes home to her isolated but idyllic country-house retreat in Romania, where her husband Lucas welcomes her. They are both sleeping in their beds when Clementine is awoken up by a noise and wakes Lucas up from his deep sleep to deal with the noises coming from outside. Their lovely romantic retreat is no longer idyllic as they...
